County worker arrested for selling Florida driver's licenses

County worker arrested for selling Florida driver's licenses
    By: Beau Zimmer

Tampa, Florida— Deisy Oropesa made her first appearance in court Thursday after investigators say she fraudulently helped 58 people obtain real Florida driver's licenses. Most of those people are believed to be illegal aliens— non-residents of the United States. Oropesa was a customer service representative with the Hillsborough County Tax Collectors office and according to investigators was paid $200 dollars for each fraudulent license she issued from the tax collectors office off Waters Avenue.

    Doug Belden, HillsboroughCounty Tax Collector:
“Our office has zero tolerance for something like this. ”
Oropesa was arrested Wednesday afternoon on 174 counts of fraud, corruption and official misconduct following a two month investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Federal authorities are also investigating and say cases like these are of top concern.

    Marc Raimondi, Homeland Security Spokesman:
“Fraudulent documents lend someone an air of authenticity they might not be entitled to. Drivers licenses, are of concern because you can do so much with them. They will allow you to get onto an aircraft.”
The Department of Homeland security has created 11 special task forces across the country dedicated to detecting document fraud. They say in cases where authentic documents are obtained illegally, national security is put at risk.

Marc Raimondi, Homeland Security Spokesman :
“When someone sells authentic drivers licenses… they are near impossible to detect at checkpoints or elsewhere.”
Raimondi says authentic driver's licenses obtained illegally are what hijackers used to board aircraft on September 11th 2001. Since then Homeland Security officials say preventing document fraud has become a top priority. The state and federal investigation into the Tampa case is ongoing and could result in more arrests.

This has happened more than once in Florida. I think that there should be more harsher sentences for it as it is a major threat to Homeland Security. Highway Patrol should inform the government at the federal level regarding this.
