JUPITER ISLAND — The police chief of one of America's richest towns promised Friday to launch a new anti-drug and human smuggling task force after a Jamaican man drowned and a waterfront resident came home to find that suspected illegal immigrants gad used her shower and boiled eggs on her stove.

The smuggler was still at large Friday evening, but 12 Jamaican men were captured in a massive manhunt that also netted a handgun and a bag of heroin in the Thursday night landing, said Martin County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lt. Jenell Atlas.

The ultra-rich town is a frequent landing spot for boat captains smuggling immigrants from the Caribbean, who likely want to avoid more populated areas in Palm Beach and Miami to the south.

This was the fifth immigrant landing and third drowning death in Martin and north Palm Beach counties in the last few months, and the drugs and gun elevated the situation for authorities.

"Law enforcement is very concerned by the increase in aggression with these drug smugglers," said Chief Ted Gonzales, the head of the Jupiter Island Public Safety Department. "We're going to have to initiate a more aggressive campaign to stop these people."

The chief said he would work with other agencies to plan specific times for interdiction operations.

The men in U.S. Border Patrol custody are scheduled for a hearing before an immigration judge, beginning the process of removing them from the country. But the undocumented immigrants will not be sent home until local and federal authorities complete criminal investigations into the smuggling and the death, said Victor Colon, assistant chief for the Miami sector of the Border Patrol.

"Unfortunately for law enforcement in this day in age, we are the first line of defense when it comes to homeland security . . .," Gonzales said. "We have the same fears and concerns that our military does."

    ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT LANDINGS

Other undocumented immigrant landings in Martin and north Palm Beach counties in 2006:

July 26: Nine immigrants are captured near the beach on Jupiter Island. Authorities say the smuggler who brought them to Florida might have used the lobster mini-season to cover his landing.

Aug. 16: A Bahamian woman dies after she and 13 other immigrants are forced into the ocean north of Jupiter Inlet 25 to 50 yards offshore. The body of a man who made the trip is found floating in the surf off Jupiter Island the next day.

Sept. 15: Local and federal authorities round up 12 Haitian immigrants who land on Rocky Point. The two Bahamian men who smuggled them into the country later plead guilty to federal charges.

Oct. 20: Two Bahamian women raise suspicion among two fishermen whom they ask to call a taxi. The fishermen instead turn in the women, who landed with eight men about a mile and a half north of Hobe Sound Beach.

I am glad to see it. We are sick of it. This happens all the time and Border Partol (Homeland Security) and the Coast Guard are on to them in the Miami area. They are forced to move more north. With all the rich people there you can bet your last penny that it will be dealt with by politicians.
