Bill to prod courts on bail for immigrants goes to governor

By The Associated Press
PHOENIX (AP) -- A bill aimed at prodding courts to enforce a voter-approved law that denies bail to illegal immigrants who are charged with serious crimes is headed to Governor Napolitano.
The Senate approved the bill on a 19-to-9 vote today. The House approved it Wednesday, 34-to-22.
The bill would spell out procedures and ground rules that courts must use in deciding if criminal defendants are illegal immigrants who should be denied bail.
The bill requires courts to consider defendants' admissions, immigration holds, indications from law enforcement agencies and any other evidence that shows a defendant is in the United States illegally.
