Editorial | Immigrant Law Repealed - Not a small-town job

Officials in Riverside, N.J., have chosen the right course by rescinding the town's ill-advised crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Township officials have voted to repeal the law, which would have penalized landlords for renting rooms to illegal immigrants and businesses for hiring them.

The action Monday night came after the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project challenged the ordinance in court.

It's believed to be the first time that a town has backed down on this issue, out of the more than 120 municipalities nationwide that have passed or are considering anti-immigration measures.

The township cited a potentially costly court battle as a reason for ditching the law. But the bigger picture is that municipalities such as Riverside and Hazleton, Pa., which passed a similar ordinance, can't do the job that the federal government ought to be doing.

Congress is still shirking its responsibility to come up with an answer for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

Lawmakers need to come up with a way to sanction the illegal immigrants already here but allow them an avenue to ultimate citizenship.

Gridlock on the problem in Washington has the practical effect of creating a national policy that pretends these undocumented people simply aren't here.

Towns like Riverside and Hazleton can't afford this inaction at the national level.

Municipalities end up providing services to their immigrant population; some towns feel overwhelmed and take action to essentially push the problem somewhere else.

Not only won't it work, it also pushes this vulnerable class of people even deeper into the shadows.

In July, a federal judge invalidated Hazleton's ordinance, saying local laws can't take precedent over federal immigration rules. That ruling should have jump-started a new effort in Congress, but so far it hasn't.

Perhaps the debate over the war in Iraq is taking up all of the time and energy in Washington, but immigration is another pressing concern that demands congressional action now.

This kind of goings on is just plain wrong. When did it become ok for Non-Citizens to dictate to anyone!!!!! I know what would have happened 100 years ago. Looks like its heading that way. Thanks for the info Zeezil. Someone needs to step on the ALCU and reign them back. There needs to be Legislation that states that Anyone in the United States here Illegaly has no right to Legal Council. That would take care of that problem.

yes and it sets a very dangerous precedent and others will believe it is okay to rescind the laws. All NJ will be right back where it was before the horrible murders in Newark. Some days it just seems like we are fighting a losing battle BUT we have to keep on fighting.

It only seems that we are losing. They have capital and the MSM, but we have 80% public support.

There are victories. The Kennedy-McCain-Graham amnesty went down in flames, and Senators McCain and Graham are draping themselves with the flag in their attempts to recover their podiums. The 2006 Mexican Flag marches and the Cinco de Mayo riot in LA's MacArthur Park turned "mainstream" America against illegal aliens. Feeling "unwanted", illegal aliens are leaving many communities.

The American Revolution appeared to be a lost war until Cornwallis was denied access to his support ships and had to surrender at Yorktown.

Even a losing battle is not lost until we quit. Even a losing battle is still a battle the other side has to fight. Make them fight for every square inch of America they steal!
One man's terrorist is another man's undocumented worker.

Unless we enforce laws against illegal aliens today,
tomorrow WE may wake up as illegals.

The last word: illegal aliens are ILLEGAL!

Go to the justice dept. site, they have an area which lists for immigrants sites that provide legal aid, social services etc. No joke. you should check it out...after all, we must maintain rights for illegals, but not for Americans....

I am so sick of the whole thing........its a mess and won't go away.

In other words CAVE IN! If that is not waving the white flag of surrender dare tell me what is!!! We have been invaded, we are at war to save our Soverignty and way of Life! Since our Federal Govt. continues to fail us, it is up to the municipalities to try and hold order within their city and towns, or the Chaos and Anarchy being committed not only through acts of Violence aimed at American citizens but the financial toll destruction to our infra stucture of which we are constantly being told needs to be rebuilt, will threaten to take over all of America.
Towns like Riverside and Hazleton can't afford this inaction at the national level.
