Ten gang members, who police believe had planned to shoot rivals over the Halloween weekend, were arrested on minor charges before any shooting started.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Detective Tim Jolly said 10 members of Mara Salvatrucha 13 were arrested Saturday when police and federal authorities found them partying inside a vacant mobile home in north Charlotte.
Eight were charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering the mobile home on Henderson Circle off Old Statesville Road. One was charged with driving without a license. The tenth -- and all but two of the others -- were charged with immigration violations.
One was a juvenile, but the others generally ranged in age from late teens to mid-20s.
Jolly, a gang investigator, said authorities were looking for these members of the traditionally Salvadoran gang because they'd heard the group was planning a weekend shooting.
He said the identity of the targets wasn't clear but they are members of a rival Latino gang.
"Hopefully, with us taking this proactive approach, we're preventing a shooting," he said. "We took part of the core group out."
MS-13 is known as one of the city's most violent gangs. From January 2000 until October 2003, at least 20 members were charged with murder in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
Since then, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been targeting MS-13s who are illegal immigrants for deportation. More than 100 have been arrested on immigration violations in the last 16 months. Since the immigration crackdown, no known MS-13 has been linked to a homicide in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, police said.
Last year, gang investigators said at least 200 -- and probably many more -- MS-13s were living in the Charlotte area....
