• Obama Is Losing the Youth Vote

On June 13, 2012, Matt Miller, writing in the Washington Post opined: “Younger Americans . . . You’re in big trouble. You don’t even know it . . . The job market for young people is a disaster.”

This was hardly a revelation, especially to college and graduate students who have sent out dozens of resumes but received not a single reply, dashing their dreams of high-paying jobs and career advancement.

Estimates are that more than half of recent college graduates are now among the unemployed or under-employed. Many have student loan payments due or past due, as total student loans top a trillion dollars. President Barack Obama has shown little concern for this disenchanted block of voters.

On June 15, 2012, adding insult to injury, the president issued an administrative fiat from the White House Rose Garden extending what amounts to work-permit amnesty for an estimated 1.4 million undocumented younger people brought to the United States before their 16th birthday “through no fault of their own.”

Obama authorized Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to grant DHS attorneys and officials use of “prosecutorial discretion” to temporarily stop deportation of well-behaved undocumented youths under the age of 30.

This campaign handout comes with a work permit and a waiver to remain in the United States for two years to compete with an estimated 2.7 million unemployed U.S. citizen “youths” seeking jobs.

Estimates of U.S. citizens of all ages currently unemployed or under-employed range from 25 million to 40 million. Hispanic unemployment is at 11 percent, while unemployment among black Americans is 15 percent, with black youth unemployment as high as 40.5 percent.

Obama’s “prosecutorial discretion” bastardizes the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, Education for Alien Minors) that was making its way through Congress. The president’s temporary provision has no real purpose other than to secure Hispanic votes in November.

Use of “prosecutorial discretion” to prevent deportations is not new. On June 17, 2011, the Department of Homeland Security issued a memo instructing DHS attorneys and other officials to exercise “prosecutorial discretion” in all deportation cases.

Hispanic response to the 2011 memo has been minimal, perhaps because there was no work permit attached. Also Hispanic voters have not forgotten that the Democrats controlled the White House and Congress — both the House and the Senate — during President Obama’s first two years, yet comprehensive immigration reform got nowhere.

On July 19, 2012, during House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearings, DHS Secretary Napolitano evaded questions about the President’s Rose Garden announcement. The Obama administration chooses to ignore the impact of work-permit amnesty on a weakened workforce.

The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) allows “youths” up to 26 years of age, including unemployed and under-employed college graduates, to be carried on their parents’ health insurance policies.

Some of these youths suspect that Obama and Senate and House Democrats, in passing this provision, knew of the pending unemployment crisis.

In May 2012, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel carried an article, “College grads turn to tech schools for training.” College grads in Wisconsin with “soft” degrees in majors such as liberal arts and ethnic studies claim they are unable to find jobs.

Employers seek skilled workers with science and tech-savvy degrees. Recent grads blame President Obama and former Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, D-Wis., for the lack of jobs.

In turn, President Obama blames Republicans for the unemployment and leadership malaise –– forgetting that he’s the leader. In an interview on Spanish-language Univision Radio in February 2012, the president bragged, “My presidency is not over. I’ve got another five years coming up. We’re going to get this done.”

For U.S. citizens, however, there is no Obama job recovery plan. The president has only one plan at the moment: re-election. He has no advice for unemployed and under-employed college graduates burdened with student loan debt.

A New York Times story on July 2, 2012, quoted a Central Michigan University student as saying, “But there’s a lot of discouragement going around.” A recent Gallup national poll shows support for Obama in the 18- to 30-year age group dropping 20 percent.

America’s rising young stars of business, engineering, law, medicine, and the sciences who have jobs suspect that government-controlled work in a second Obama term will resemble indentured servitude. Mediocrity is becoming the national norm.

A recent Harvard University study found that young voters think it important to protect individual liberties from government control. Yet, the Obama administration means to fundamentally “change” the United States of America into a European-style socialist government.

Obama's decisions to relax U.S. immigration laws and regulations can only advance an open-door immigration policy. Meanwhile unemployed U.S. citizen “youths” moving back home with their folks face the realization that American exceptionalism could become a thing of the past.

Obama is losing the young vote.
