Most Americans can’t afford a new home.
A new analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) shows that 65% of U.S. households are priced out of newly built homes, based on current prices and mortgage rates.
In some parts of the country, the situation is even more extreme. More than 80% of households can’t afford a new home, highlighting how widespread the affordability gap has become.
This map, via Visual Capitalist's Dorosthy Neufeld, shows where Americans are being priced out and where barriers to homeownership are highest.



Ranked: Where Americans Are Most Priced Out of New Homes

At the extreme end, buying a new home is nearly out of reach. In New Hampshire, 83.4% of households are priced out of a new median-priced home.
In total, 11 states have at least 80% of households locked out.
This table shows the share of households priced out of new homes by state in 2026. A household is considered “priced out” if total housing costs—principal, interest, taxes, and insurance—exceed 28% of income, based on median new home prices and a 6% mortgage rate.

While high-cost states like Hawaii and Massachusetts rank among the least affordable, others such as Maine and Wyoming show that affordability pressures are no longer limited to major metro areas.
Affordability Isn’t Just a Coastal Problem

The most striking takeaway is how universal the problem has become.
Even in lower-cost states like Mississippi ($267K) and West Virginia ($309K), a majority of households are still priced out new homes. While buyers need under $90,000 in income—compared to over $200,000 in the least affordable markets—that threshold remains out of reach for many.
In other words, moving to a cheaper state is no longer a reliable solution. Instead, the data points to a deeper issue, which is that incomes have not kept pace with rising housing costs across the country.
While existing homes can be more affordable than new construction, this data highlights a key constraint: much of the new housing supply entering the market is already out of reach for most households.
The Bigger Picture

As new home prices continue to outpace income growth, the gap between who can and can’t afford newly built homes is widening. That shift is reshaping where Americans live, how they build wealth, and whether homeownership is attainable at all.
If even the most affordable states are out of reach for most households looking at new homes, the question becomes harder to ignore: where can buyers realistically go next?

Update(1410ET): President Trump has warned Iran on Sunday that the "clock is ticking" as Pakistani-mediated talks have not only stalled, but show no signs at all of restarting anytime soon. "They better get moving, FAST, or there won't be anything left of them," he wrote on Truth Social. "TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!"
He spoke the same day with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who along with Lindsey Graham has been calling for resumption of robust anti-Tehran action to ensure Iran can never go nuclear. Trump's words have been somewhat of a familiar refrain going back several weeks.
As we detailed below, Iran says it received a counter proposal of '5 conditions' for peace from the White House. In many ways they are directly opposite the 5 conditions Iran sent to the US last week, which Trump had rejected as "garbage".
But as yet there's been no indicator that the US side has attached a timeline to its latest demands. Trump is perhaps pushing this new "clock is ticking" as a timeline threat of sorts. But again, there was no specific date included in the fresh warning.
Last week Bloomberg Intelligence circulated a report titled, Iran Rejects Trump's Offer - Return to War Likely. It concluded:
The diplomatic dance continues: the US and Iran exchanged offers yet again. But they remain far apart, shooting maximalist demands at each other. A comprehensive peace deal is unlikely to materialize. We think the US and Iran will likely return to strikes. But we expect an intense exchange of fire to be temporary and reduce to lower-levels of fighting – what we call the new normal in this protracted conflict.

Short but Intense... and Costly
Trump doesn’t want long war. His popularity is taking a hit as its economic impact is being felt.
We think Trump will likely revert to a short air and missile strike campaign on Iranian infrastructure, military positions, and energy assets while simultaneously continuing the blockade. Tehran will likely respond with strikes of its own, both on US military assets and America’s regional partners. But we expect this to be a short bombardment, rather than the sustained, high-intensity strike campaign that marked the beginning of the war.
The war has already imposed a heavy economic cost. Oil markets flipped from an expected record surplus to historic supply disruption. Major central banks, facing fresh inflation risks, are turning more hawkish. Consumers now pay more for energy, while their borrowing costs also rise, and the future grows more uncertain.
The longer the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, the more it will drain the oil stockpiles cushioning governments, companies, and consumers today. Once inventories run thin, prices need to do the hard work: rising high enough to curb demand back in line with available supply.
Since that report was issued, nothing has changed, and both sides seem to have dug in their heels even more.

According to a Sunday report from Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, the United States has laid down a firm, take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum to Tehran. Both sides are still trying to patiently wait out the Hormuz crisis, hoping to inflict more economic pain on the other until they blink.
At the top of the list, the US is demanding a near-total dismantling of Iran's atomic ambitions, "allowing only one Iranian nuclear facility to remain operational."

Iran's own five conditions from a week ago, which President Trump said were "unacceptable" and "garbage".
For example the US is refusing to pay compensation for damage caused during strikes on Iranian territory - a 'maximalist' sticking point which Tehran had demanded previously.
Washington is also reportedly insists that 400 kilograms of enriched uranium be transferred from Iran to the US, while only one active nuclear facility would remain operational inside the Islamic Republic.
Iran for its part has recently vowed to never transfer its nuclear material out of the Islamic Republic, calling the issue a matter of national sovereignty and energy security which it alone has say over. This after even Russia offered to take it.
The newly reported five conditions by the US side further states that the US does not intend to release more than 25% of frozen Iranian assets. Tehran has demanded the dropping of all US sanctions as a key basis for lasting settlement.
Here are the five newly proposed Washington conditions, which some pundits have called 'wishful thinking':

  1. No war compensation from US
  2. Give up 400kg of Highly Enriched Uranium to US
  3. Iran can only have on nuclear facility to remain active
  4. Not more than 25% of frozen assets to be unfreezed
  5. Halting war on all fronts depends on negotiations

So this leaves a huge distance between the Washington list and Tehran's list, as the seemingly unbridgeable gulf remains, also as Iran is digging in its heels.
As a reminder, the below is the Islamic Republic's list, which it hasn't backed down from. It has offered the following as the only basis on which to restart talks:

  1. Ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon
  2. Lifting all sanctions
  3. Releasing frozen Iranian assets
  4. Compensation for war damages and losses
  5. Recognition of Iran’s sovereign rights over the Strait of Hormuz

While a Pakistani-mediated ceasefire managed to take effect on April 8, subsequent talks in Islamabad completely collapsed, but then President Trump later extended the truce indefinitely, likely to buy time and to figure out "what's next" - while seeking a complete blockade of Iranian oil exports, and of all vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports.
With Washington demanding total disarmament and Iran demanding control over the world's most critical oil transit choke point, the stage is set for a likely coming renewal of direct clashes, given the zero sum demands of each side now on the table.

Same guy runs the nonprofit AND the program. Chris Walker. Two paychecks. Look it up.
And their SISTER organization — same building, same staff, same donors — is a 501(c)(4) that endorses Democrat candidates and runs door-knocking operations in the EXACT SAME NEIGHBORHOODS.
Taxpayer money essentially going into the pockets of friends, family, and donors, then a portion kicked back to elect politicians. Mostly Democrats. And this isn’t like so many of the scams, where 20+% is at least spent on the intended mission, no, this is 7.2%
And not one journalist in this state asked a single question until @jennyraeca and CAL DOGE pulled the receipts.
They probably still do not care. This is not new. It goes back to reporting in February, yet, the California media is still quiet.

Officials described the move as a "historic transparency effort" aimed at giving the American public direct access to information long shrouded in secrecy.
Military encounters and Apollo mysteries

Among the intriguing newly released materials are reports describing "metallic objects," unexplained "red lights" in the sky and aerial encounters involving U.S. military personnel.
One highlighted case references a 2024 Indo-Pacific sighting of a football-shaped object near Japanese waters, while another revisits Apollo 17 mission records from 1972 documenting mysterious drifting lights observed above the lunar surface.
The files also contain incidents from the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 moon missions. In a 1969 debriefing after the Apollo 11 flight, astronaut Buzz Aldrin reported seeing "little flashes inside the cabin, spaced a couple of minutes apart," while trying to fall asleep.
Aldrin also described seeing "what appeared to be a fairly bright light source, which we tentatively ascribed to a possible laser."
During Apollo 12 in 1969, astronaut Alan Bean reported "flashes of light" that he described as "sailing off into space."
Some incidents debunked, others remain unexplained

As explained by the Enoch AI engine at BrightU.AI, the newly released documents show that some incidents were immediately debunked by intelligence officials.
For example, on September 5, 1948, military crew members flying at 30,000 feet over the Netherlands reported an unidentified aircraft with "sudden accelerations and then a climb." Within a few months, officials concluded it was a single-propelled jet using "rocket assists with tremendous reserve power."
Other incidents in the files are only described and do not draw conclusions.
There is a transcript of an exchange between astronaut Frank Borman from Gemini 7 in 1965, in which he refers to a "bogey at 10 o'clock high" about 4.5 hours into the spaceflight. Borman then describes the bogey as "hundreds of little particles going by to the left out about three or four miles."
Recent reports and redactions

The files also include incidents from 2020 to the present as mission reports from the U.S. Air Force identifying "potential" UAPs, with few details on what the object is or when or where it was identified.
Other accounts are reports from people around the country submitted since the 1940s.
Some sightings were redacted, such as a September 2023 report of an FBI FaceTime interview with a drone operator who, along with colleagues, saw a "bright light over the horizon" at a U.S. test site. The document notes that "redactions have been made to protect the identity of eyewitnesses, the location of government facilities or potentially sensitive information about military sites not related to UAP."
The sighting was described as "a linear object with a super bright light on the east side of the object. The light was bright white and bright enough to see bands within the light. The object was metallic/gray in color. It did not have any wings or exhaust. The object was smaller than a 737, one to two Blackhawk helicopters in length and was definitely bigger than a drone." Witnesses said the object was about 5,000 feet above ground, moved east to west, and vanished after about 5 to 10 seconds.
A broader declassification effort

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill, along with interested parties ranging from serious scientists to conspiracy theorists, have pressed for the disclosure of these files for years.
The release was coordinated through the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) as part of a broader interagency initiative involving the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, NASA, the FBI, the Department of Energy and other U.S. intelligence agencies.
Officials said additional releases are expected in the coming weeks as part of a broader declassification effort. In February, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of War to disclose "any and all information" related to UFOs and UAP.
There is a caveat, however.
"While all of the files have been reviewed for security purposes, many of the materials have not yet been analyzed for resolution of any anomalies," the press release stated. "The American people have asked for more transparency on these topics, and President Trump is delivering," the release added.
The interagency effort to release the UFO files has its own acronym: PURSUE, or the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters. As with previous government document dumps, no interpretation of the unidentified anomalous phenomena was shared by the White House, leaving the public to draw its own conclusions from the newly available records.

The independent pan-European commission on climate and health, which was convened by the WHO, concluded the climate crisis was such a worldwide threat to health that the WHO should declare it “a public health emergency of international concern” (Pheic).

Erdman's attorney, Carol Thompson, told reporters her client feared the CIA would retaliate against him using "bureaucratic processes and alleged secrecy requirements" to undermine his testimony and obfuscate the truth. According to Erdman's testimony, the CIA was considering officially adopting the lab-leak hypothesis as late as Aug. 12, 2021 — but by Aug. 17, 2021, had shifted to an inconclusive stance, likely due to Fauci's influence. The Biological Sciences Experts Group, known as the "B Group," operates under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to provide outside scientific expertise, but Paul argued its members were not independent.
Dr. Ralph Baric, who collaborated with Chinese researchers to create gain-of-function coronaviruses, served on the B Group and as a consultant to intelligence agencies on COVID origins. Peter Daszak received hundreds of millions of dollars from the U.S. government and worked with Wuhan researchers on gain-of-function experiments, yet was sent to China with the World Health Organization to investigate COVID origins.
"The scientists commissioned to investigate COVID origins were, in some cases, the very scientists who were complicit in the gain-of-function experiments that may have created COVID," Paul said in his opening remarks.
This structure, Paul argued, meant the intelligence community paid researchers to review work and write papers, NIH funded their grants, the CIA consulted them with access to classified information, and policymakers cited the result as consensus — all while conflicts of interest remained undisclosed.
Potential indictment and state-level investigations

Legal experts noted Fauci could still face state-level charges not shielded by the federal pardon. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed the state's Major Crimes Division to investigate Fauci for allegedly causing "the deaths of tens of thousands of Texans," The Gateway Pundit reported.

President Trump's earlier previewed controversial troop cuts for the European continent may already be in progress, and could happen more rapidly than previously thought.
The US Army has canceled the deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division to Poland, NBC reports this week. The deployment would have involved over 4,000 soldiers as well as military equipment.

Various reports say that top Pentagon staff were 'blindsided' by what is being characterized as War Secretary Pete Hegseth's sudden U-turn on the plan to send troops to Poland, amid Trump anger at Europe.
Politico says that troops and equipment had actually started arriving in the country:
The decision was even more surprising because troops and equipment had already started to arrive in the country. It sent fresh waves of anxiety through European capitals and inside the Pentagon on Thursday about whether such moves could embolden Russia — and which ally might turn into the next target.
“We had no idea this was coming,” said one of the U.S. officials, adding that European and American officials have spent the last 24 hours on the phone trying to understand the decision and figure out if more surprises are coming.
Some of this surprise and frustration was echoed in public, with Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the former commander of the U.S. Army in Europe, stating that the Army’s role in Europe "is all about deterring the Russians, protecting America’s strategic interests and assuring allies."
But it remains that "now a very important asset that was coming to be part of that deterrence is gone." He added: "The Poles certainly have never criticized President Trump, and they do all the things that good allies are supposed to do. And yet, this happens."
There was no command announcement, with some troops learning of the deployment cancelation by text among their friends and members of their unit.
As for Trump's plan to reduce the US presence in Germany by 5,000, this is expected to take many months - possibly over a period of six months to a year.

In February 2026, the Trump administration struck one of its biggest blows to climate action yet — repealing the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “endangerment finding.” Issued in 2009, the endangerment finding is a determination that greenhouse gas pollution threatens public health and welfare.
The finding is a key mechanism that the federal government relies on to regulate climate pollution under the Clean Air Act. It laid the foundation for emissions standards that could rein in climate-harming pollution from sources like power plants and oil and gas facilities, in addition to motor vehicles.
Repealing the endangerment finding takes a critical tool out of the government’s toolbox, at a time when bold climate action is more important than ever to protect communities and the environment.

UK halves funding to flagship global climate fund
The UK has halved its contribution to the world’s largest dedicated climate fund, a cut of more than £800mn, in a move that will reinforce concerns that rich countries are retreating from a promise to help developing nations respond to global warming.
The move comes a year after Donald Trump’s administration rescinded the US’s $4bn pledge to the UN’s Green Climate Fund, which had left the UK as the largest contributor.
The UK notified the fund this week that it would cut its pledge for its second replenishment cycle by about 50 per cent to £815mn, according to an email seen by the FT. The reduction forms part of far-reaching cuts to its international aid budget.
The Green Climate Fund, which is the main financial tool to implement the landmark Paris Agreement, oversees $20bn committed to projects in areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and resilient agriculture in 134 developing countries.

In an email to the board, which is made up of developed and developing countries, GCF boss Mafalda Duarte wrote that the UK move came as the country decided to cut overseas aid allocations “and invest more in addressing growing security threats”.

U.S. households are now 18.79 trillion dollars in debt. In 1980, U.S. households were just 1.4 trillion dollars in debt. Over the past several decades we have witnessed a household debt binge that is unlike anything that we have ever witnessed in our entire history. But if consumers could handle that debt load, there wouldn’t be such a high level of concern. Unfortunately, just like we witnessed prior to the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, Americans are getting behind on their debts at a staggering rate. This isn’t going to end well, but of course many of you know that already.

The latest numbers published by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York show that delinquency rates for auto loans, student loans and credit card debt have all soared to very alarming levels…
Today, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY) published new data showing that the share of Americans behind on a range of household consumer debts reached all-time highs in the first quarter of 2026. As the nation hurdles toward an historical record of $19 trillion in total household debt, Americans saw the highest rates of auto loan delinquency that FRBNY has ever recorded, rates of credit card delinquency near those last seen at the height of the 2008 financial crisis, and student loan delinquency at its worst since before the COVID-era payment pause.
Thanks to our accelerating cost of living crisis, most U.S. households are barely scraping by from month to month these days.

As financial pressure rises, an increasing number of households are reaching a breaking point.
As a result, we are beginning to witness a tsunami of delinquencies…
While families took on more debt, they also fell behind. Credit card delinquency rates are now the highest they have been in 16 years (13.1 percent). Overall student loan delinquency rates soared to 10.3 percent, the highest recorded since 2020. Significantly more student loan borrowers are also entering serious delinquency, with their loans more than 90 days past due (10.9 percent) compared to the first quarter of 2025 (8.0 percent). In fact, delinquency rates have increased for all credit types tracked by the FRBNY since the final quarter of 2025.
Those figures are deeply troubling.
And I haven’t even mentioned mortgages yet.
In April, there were more than 42,000 foreclosure filings…
New data released by real estate analytics firm ATTOM found that 42,430 properties nationwide received foreclosure filings in April 2026, including default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions.
Is that a high number?

Foreclosure filings across the US have surged 18 percent compared to last year in a troubling sign that mounting financial pressure is beginning to hit homeowners.
It is a red flag that is reminiscent of the foreclosure spike in the run up to the 2008 Great Recession – that financial pressure is mounting for thousands of families.

Many of you clearly remember that we experienced a growing wave of foreclosures well before the financial markets started to crash in late 2008.
It was obvious that the housing bubble was crashing way in advance, and we can see the same thing happening again.
In Seattle, the number of homes listed for sale is nearly twice the usual figure, and prices are beginning to fall…
There are 8,630 homes listed for sale across the Seattle metro right now. In a normal April, there are about 4,600.
Nick Gerli, CEO of the real estate analytics firm Reventure, posted that data on Sunday on X. His read: Seattle’s housing market is going through a historic inventory shock, driven by layoffs, historic unaffordability, and outbound migration. King County values are already down 2.5% year over year. Prices are falling, and a typical listing is still right around $1 million, with a monthly mortgage payment of $7,000 to $8,000. That’s $84,000 to $96,000 a year just on the mortgage. The median household income across the Seattle metro is about $112,000 before taxes. After federal and state deductions, that household is taking home somewhere around $85,000 to $90,000. The mortgage alone consumes virtually all of it.
The market is cracking. Regular people still can’t afford to buy.
Yes, the market in Seattle is most definitely cracking.
And the same thing could be said about dozens of other markets all over the nation.

It is inevitable that home prices will fall because we have reached a point where most of the population simply cannot afford a typical mortgage payment.
In our “K-shaped economy”, those at the very top have been thriving while the vast majority of the country has been deeply struggling.
Sadly, there are a lot of young adults out there that have simply stopped trying.
This is particularly true for young men, and the numbers clearly show that millions upon millions of them have chosen to drop out of the labor force…
The Department of Labor keeps careful track of employment and the demographics thereof. Their latest report on men in the labor force is both mysterious and deeply alarming. It turns out that the labor force is missing about 7 million men who would otherwise be working. Close to a third of working-age men have vanished from the labor force.
The labor force participation rate among “prime age men,” age 25 to 54, in the 1950s approached 100 percent. Now it is 89 percent, meaning roughly 11 percent are not in the labor force (neither working nor looking for work).
Among all men over 16 years of age, the rate is a devastatingly low 66 percent, so about one-third are gone. Among U.S.-born men, nearly 22 percent are gone.
This is really quite shocking.
We really do have a national crisis on our hands.
The number of homeless Americans is at an all-time high.
Most of them are men.
The number of drug addicts in our country is at an all-time high.
Most of them are men.
So many people have been falling through the cracks in the system, and it seems to get worse with each passing year.
Meanwhile, an increasing number of households are falling behind on their debts and America’s middle class is steadily shrinking.
All of the long-term trends are taking us in the wrong direction, and it appears that our economic problems will only accelerate during the months ahead.

A Newly Discovered Asteroid That Is The Size Of A Basketball Court Will Pass Very Close To The Earth On Monday

A really big space rock is going to have a very close encounter with our planet on Monday. Based on current calculations, we are being told that we don’t have anything to be concerned about, but if this really big space rock actually hit a major city it would cause a catastrophic amount of damage. So let’s hope that what the astronomers are telling us is correct.

Of course this is not the only asteroid that has come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2026.
So far this year, a whopping 72 asteroids have flown past our planet at a distance of less than 1 lunar distance.
In other words, the level of traffic in our particular neighborhood has risen to a very alarming level.
In fact, on May 7th an asteroid that was only discovered the day after it flew by us came within 0.114 lunar distances of the center of our planet…
Asteroid 2026 JM2 passed Earth at a distance of 0.114 LD (0.00029 AU / 43 800 km / 27 200 miles), from the center of our planet at 13:06 UTC on May 7, 2026, becoming the 4th closest known asteroid flyby within 1 lunar distance recorded so far this year. At its closest, the object was about 37 400 km (23 200 miles) above Earth’s surface, about 1 600 km (1 000 miles) outside the altitude used by geostationary satellites.
2026 JM2 is one of 72 known asteroids to pass within 1 lunar distance of Earth in 2026 and the 4th closest so far this year, following 2026 EM, which passed at 0.072 LD on March 7; 2026 HZ4, which passed at 0.077 LD on April 24; and 2026 DN5, which passed at 0.112 LD on February 22.
The object was first observed at JPL SynTrack Robotic Telescope, Auberry, at 07:02 UTC on May 8 — about 17 hours 56 minutes after closest approach.

That asteroid could have easily entered our atmosphere, and we never even saw it coming.
Now another one is rapidly approaching, and it is big.
According to the BBC, the asteroid that will come zipping past us on Monday is “about as big as a basketball court”…

Apparently this very large space rock has “enough mass to wipe out a city”…
Despite having enough mass to wipe out a city it was only identified by observatories a few days ago, raising concerns about the early detection of potentially hazardous asteroids.
The reason why most of us are just learning about this asteroid now is because it was just discovered.
It was initially seen by the Mt. Lemmon Survey that is located near Tucson, Arizona on May 10th.
We are actually quite fortunate that this one was spotted in advance, because many near-Earth objects are only discovered once they have already flown past our planet.
It is being estimated that this asteroid is somewhere between 50 and 115 feet wide…
The Small-Body Database led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory suggests 2026 JH2 measures somewhere between 16–35 metres (50–115 feet) wide.
For comparison, the Chelyabinsk meteor that entered the atmosphere over Russia in 2013 was about 20 metres (65 feet) wide.
If the Chelyabinsk meteor had exploded over a heavily populated area, a massive amount of damage would have been done.

According to Wikipedia, the explosion of that meteor produced “approximately 30 times as much energy as that released by the atomic bomb detonated at Hiroshima”…
The object exploded in a meteor air burst over Chelyabinsk Oblast, at a height of about 30 kilometres (18.6 miles).[6] The explosion generated a bright flash, producing a hot cloud of dust and gas that penetrated to 26 kilometres (16 mi), and many surviving small fragmentary meteorites. Most of the object’s energy was absorbed by the atmosphere, creating a large shock wave. The asteroid had a total kinetic energy before atmospheric impact equivalent to the blast yield of 400–500 kilotonnes of TNT (1.7–2.1 petajoules), estimated from infrasound and seismic measurements. This was approximately 30 times as much energy as that released by the atomic bomb detonated at Hiroshima.[7]
The object approached Earth undetected before its atmospheric entry, in part because its radiant (source direction) was close to the Sun. 1,491 people were injured seriously enough to seek medical treatment. All of the injuries were due to indirect effects rather than the meteor itself, mainly from broken glass from windows that were blown in when the shock wave arrived, minutes after the superbolide’s flash. Around 7,200 buildings in six cities across the region were damaged by the explosion’s shock wave, and authorities scrambled to help repair the structures in sub-freezing temperatures. No deaths were reported.
Now we are going to have a very close encounter with a space rock that could be even bigger.
One scientist is claiming that this asteroid will come “as close as you can get without hitting”…
2026JH2, as it has been labelled by the astronomy community, is predicted to zoom by our planet at an estimated distance of 90,917 kilometres – only a quarter of the distance between us and the moon.
“In astronomical terms, it’s as close as you can get without hitting,” says Mark Norris at the University of Lancashire, UK.
If an asteroid comes too close, it can be pulled into our atmosphere by the Earth’s gravity.
So let us hope that the calculations that our astronomers have come up with are correct and that it will safely pass us at a distance of approximately 56,000 miles on Monday…
Asteroid 2026 JH2’s closest approach to Earth is expected at 21:23 UTC on 18 May 2026, when it will pass by at a distance of 90,000km (56,000 miles).
That may sound incredibly far away – and it is – but to put it into perspective, the average distance between Earth and the Moon is 385,000km (239,000 miles)

That means asteroid 2026 JH2 will pass Earth at just under a quarter of the distance between Earth and the Moon.
If our astronomers are wrong and this thing actually hits us, it would be a very serious event.
One expert is warning that this asteroid is so large that it “would ruin a city quite efficiently”…
‘It’s the kind of thing that would ruin a city quite efficiently, if it hit,’ Mark Norris, from the University of Lancashire, told New Scientist.
The good news is that scientists are telling us that “current calculations show no impact risk”…
Astronomers are still working to better understand the asteroid’s orbit and physical characteristics. So far, the object has been tracked only 24 times over several days. While its trajectory is still being refined, current calculations show no impact risk.
Even if this particular asteroid is no threat, astronomers openly admit that there are thousands upon thousands of other near-Earth objects that still haven’t been discovered yet.
One of these days, it is inevitable that time will run out and an extremely large space rock will hit our planet.
When that day arrives, it will dramatically alter the course of human history.
So let’s keep watching the skies.

They are all sorts of big mad in these letters, but, weirdly, none are saying what they’ve done in their own lives to make their carbon footprints zero
(NY Times) Re “Democrats Don’t Have to Campaign on Climate Change Anymore,” by Matthew T. Huber (Opinion guest essay, May 12):
It is ironic, dangerous and sad that this writer says the biggest crisis humans have ever faced should no longer be a campaign topic in America. Extreme climate events like insidious fires, floods, droughts, heat waves and storms are very damaging and real! Lives and livelihoods are extinguished.
Yet Dr. Huber views climate change discussions as “yet another issue fueling polarization.” In light of looming global disasters, is political polarization our biggest worry?
Instead, news of our distressed climate needs to be in the headlines daily. It needs to be widely broadcast because it is real and people need to be informed. Many other regions of the world have moved past the talk of climate toward serious mitigation measures. America needs to join in.
Has Sally stopped using fossil fuels? Moved into a tiny home? Given up meat?
As a mother of two young children, I believe that it is simply disqualifying in 2026 for a candidate not to mention climate. Matthew T. Huber may be correct that we can fight climate change without mentioning the word “climate,” but is that the kind of leadership we want in office? The kind that avoids naming a problem and is incapable of making the connections for people about climate change’s effects: poor air quality, health impacts, supercharged storms, skyrocketing energy costs, cities running out of water and homeowners being priced out of or denied home insurance?
Why did you have children if we are doomed? Notice that Ali Simpson, senior manager for field campaigns for Moms Clean Air Force, requires the litmus test, but, I can’t find what she’s done in her own life other than try and force Other People to have their lives changed.
The argument that progressives shouldn’t talk about climate change because it doesn’t have strong bipartisan support is backward: They should be talking about it to build that very support. The retort nowadays is that affordability should be the goal, not clean energy, but that too misses the point. For the first time, solar and energy storage are the cheapest way to lower our utility bills. Clean energy and affordable energy are synonyms.
Jake from Washington fails to note that Dems have been pushing this for 30 years, and even in Washington the Progressives voted against a lot of climate (scam) legislation.
You can imagine the freakouts not published. But, why do their letter, tweets, posts, etc, never include what measures they have taken in their own lives?

PPI, a measure of wholesale inflation, increased in April to 6% on an annual basis from 4% in March, well exceeding economists’ expectations. On a monthly basis, the index increased 1.4%, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s twice the pace that economists expected. It’s also the second-largest monthly gain dating back to the index’s inception in 2010.
A 15.6% increase in gas prices accounted for 40% of the increase in prices businesses paid last month. That only looks to be getting worse with oil prices yet to reach their peak levels and global inventories falling at a record pace, according to a report released Wednesday by the International Energy Agency.

Without a doubt, we could certainly survive a few months of this.
But if the crisis in the Middle East drags on for many more months, we truly will be in unprecedented territory, because at some point there simply won’t be enough oil for everyone.
Over the past couple of months, the global economy has been functioning fairly normally because we have been running through existing inventory levels and strategic reserves.

If the Middle East war doesn’t end quickly, the world — including the Group of 7 developed nations that have relied on their ample oil reserves — “will start facing scarcity,” warned Ipek Ozkardeskaya, an analyst at Swissquote. And analysts at J.P. Morgan recently said that developed countries’ commercial crude stocks could be close to operational stress levels by early June.
You see, the truth is that we are running an “oil deficit” right now.
We are consuming far more than we are producing, and existing inventory levels and strategic reserves are being depleted.
At this stage, total OPEC production is down over 30 percent from pre-war levels…
OPEC production fell by 1.7 million bpd in April after output plunged by 7.9 million bpd in March. In total, production among OPEC members has dropped more than 30%, or 9.7 million bpd, during the war.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley on Monday said that oil markets are in a “race against time,” as the combination of factors that have been in place to curb crude-price jolts will fray if the Strait of Hormuz stays closed through June.
And once the conflict ends and tanker transit through the Strait of Hormuz resumes, it would still take weeks for flows to resume, and markets likely will still price in risk of potential additional disruptions.
Saudi Arabia’s state-controlled oil giant Saudi Aramco cautioned Monday that if the strait remains closed for weeks further, a market rebalance likely will extend into 2027 and “oil supply challenges” will continue.
Of course the Strait of Hormuz is not going to reopen tomorrow.
Or the next day.
Or the day after that.
In fact, the Strait of Hormuz may remain closed for a very long time.
The reason why global markets have not crashed yet is because most investors are anticipating that there will be a quick end to the war.
But what if they are wrong?
When people start realizing that there isn’t going to be a quick fix, global markets will be shaken.
And just like we witnessed during the early days of the last pandemic, there will be panic buying. Many Americans don’t realize this, but we have already seen this happen in some parts of the world…
In scenes reminiscent of pandemic-era panic buying, South Koreans rushed to buy plastic rubbish bags after the Iran war led to the closure of the strait, disrupting global supply chains.
Australians cleared the shelves of jerry cans as drivers and farmers vied to stock up on fuel in rural areas. Social media posts on possible shortages of condoms went viral in China last month.
In just a matter of weeks, shortages will start to become quite noticeable.
Asia will be hit the hardest, because they are more dependent on commodities from the Middle East than anyone else.
For example, a shortage of naphtha has already forced the largest snack producer in Japan to switch to black-and-white packaging…
Japan’s biggest snack maker has been forced to use black-and-white packaging for some flagship products because of ink ingredient shortages caused by the strait of Hormuz blockade.
Calbee, whose potato chip brands in particular are known for brightly coloured bag designs, said 14 of its products would switch to monochrome branding by the end of May.
Thousands upon thousands of supply chains are being threatened by this crisis.
Most people in the western world have absolutely no idea what is really going on out there, and for the moment ignorance is bliss.
But if the Strait of Hormuz stays closed for several more months, the entire world will clearly be feeling the pain of shortages and rapidly rising prices.

The Nuclear Missile That Vladimir Putin Just Tested Could Destroy An Area The Size Of The State Of Texas

The Russians have developed the most sophisticated nuclear missile in the history of the world by a very wide margin, and it is specifically designed to be used in a future nuclear war with the United States. The RS-28 Sarmat is an intercontinental ballistic missile that has a maximum speed of approximately 15,500 miles per hour. It is 116 feet tall, and that makes it roughly as tall as a ten story building. It can carry up to 10 metric tons of thermonuclear warheads, and those warheads can destroy an area the size of the state of Texas. We have no defenses against the Sarmat, and so once it is launched we will get hit. It is an incredibly terrifying weapon, and many believe that it is only a matter of time before it actually gets used.

The Sarmat is the crown jewel of Vladimir Putin’s very long campaign to modernize Russia’s strategic nuclear arsenal…
Since coming to power in 2000, Putin has overseen efforts to upgrade the Soviet-built components of the Russian nuclear triad — deploying hundreds of new, land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, commissioning new nuclear submarines and modernizing nuclear-capable bombers.
The United States doesn’t have anything like the Sarmat.
Neither does anyone else.
It has a maximum range of more than 21,000 miles, and it can carry up to 16 independently targetable nuclear warheads…
The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile has an expected range over 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) and can reportedly carry up to 16 independently targeted nuclear warheads, according to the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, a US-based nonprofit. Putin claims the range extends to more than 35,000 kilometers (21,750 miles).
Let me try to put this into language that anyone can understand.

This missile has enough range to reach any target on the entire planet.
So there is nowhere that is out of reach.
A single Sarmat can release 16 independently-targetable nuclear warheads.
That means that one missile goes up, and 16 warheads come down.
And each one of those warheads can instantly destroy an entire major city.
Russia plans to eventually produce more than 40 of these ICBMs.

According to Newsweek, a single Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile can carry enough nuclear warheads to wipe out “an area the size of Texas”…
The RS-28 Sarmat will reportedly carry a nuclear payload large enough to wipe out an area the size of Texas or France.
The Sarmat is the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile in the entire world by a wide margin, and we have no way to defend against them.
In fact, a study that was conducted by a team of 13 physicists and engineers with the American Physical Society determined that our anti-missile defenses are so feeble that we couldn’t even do much “to stop a relative handful of old-fashioned North Korean ICBMs” from reaching their targets.
But just in case we are able to improve them in the future, the Russians have equipped the Sarmat with “a host of capabilities intended to defeat ballistic missile defenses”…

The Sarmat is a silo-launched, liquid-fueled, nuclear-armed ICBM. The missile will reportedly have a host of capabilities intended to defeat ballistic missile defenses, ranging from decoys and other countermeasures to a fractional orbital bombardment capability, and independent post-boost vehicles (IPBV). There have even been suggestions that it could carry a payload of multiple hypersonic boost-glide vehicles.
If Vladimir Putin decides to push the button, we are toast.
Of course most people in the western world assume that Putin would never do that because our retaliatory strikes would destroy the Russians.
But the truth is that so much has changed over the past couple of decades.
The Russians now have the most sophisticated anti-missile systems in the world by a very wide margin, and we are still relying on extremely outdated Minuteman ICBMs that first went into service in the 1960s and 1970s.

If we launched our extremely outdated ICBMs at the Russians, are you sure that they would get through?

The balance of power has shifted dramatically, and most people in the western world have no idea.
Earlier this week, the Russians conducted a test launch of the Sarmat that Putin called an “unconditional success”…
The test-launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region took place at 11:15 a.m. Moscow time today, according to the Kremlin. Around half an hour later, Russian officials said that the missile hit its target at the Kura test range on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East.
The commander of the Strategic Rocket Forces, Sergei Karakayev, informed Putin of the successful test. The Russian leader monitored the launch via video link from his office bunker.

Putin called the test a “major event and unconditional success.”
This should have received a lot more attention from the media in the western world, because it is a huge story.
According to Putin, Sarmat missiles will start entering combat service by the end of this calendar year…
Putin said that the nuclear-armed Sarmat missile would enter combat service at the end of the year. It was built to replace the aging Soviet-built Voyevoda.
“This is the most powerful missile in the world,” Putin declared, adding that the combined power of the Sarmat’s individually targeted warheads is more than four times higher than that of any Western counterpart.

In contrast, the next-generation U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile, the LGM-35 Sentinel, is scheduled to enter combat service in the early 2030s.
In other words, we are way behind.
The Russians are also in the “final stages” of development for two other exceedingly fearsome weapons…
Putin also announced Russia was in the “final stages” of the development of the nuclear-armed Poseidon underwater drone and the Burevestnik cruise missile powered by miniature atomic reactors.
The Poseidon is designed to explode near enemy coastlines and cause a radioactive tsunami. The Burevestnik has virtually unlimited range thanks to nuclear propulsion, allowing it to loiter for days, circling air defenses and attacking from an unexpected direction.
In the future, a Poseidon drone armed with a nuclear weapon could be lurking just off the east coast and we would never even know it.
Once it explodes, a gigantic wall of radioactive water could come sweeping over Washington D.C. or New York City in just moments.
The Russians have been feverishly preparing for the wars of the future.
Meanwhile, our leaders have been focused on other things.
So let’s hope that a shooting war between the United States and Russia does not erupt any time soon, because it would not go very well for us.

But now, the state's relentless regulatory crackdown on refineries is backfiring—threatening not just skyrocketing gas prices but also military readiness and national security.
The problem stems from California's geographic isolation. With no oil pipelines crossing the Sierra Nevada, the state cannot draw on fuel infrastructure from the rest of the country. Its six remaining refineries—down from eight just a few years ago—bear sole responsibility for meeting enormous in-state demand: fuel for 30 million vehicles, nine international airports, 30 military bases, and three of the nation's busiest shipping ports.
A self-inflicted energy crisis

In the past two years alone, California has lost 17% of its refining capacity with the closures of the Phillips 66 refinery in Wilmington (139,000 barrels per day) and the Valero refinery in Benicia (145,000–170,000 barrels per day). More closures are likely as the California Air Resources Board (CARB) tightens emissions rules, making it nearly impossible for refineries to operate profitably.
"These refineries make jet fuel and diesel and gasoline for our military," warned Rep. Vince Fong (R-Bakersfield). "If China or Russia decides to pull the plug on India getting crude for us, guess what? It's catastrophic," said Assemblymember Stan Ellis (R-Bakersfield).
Right now, California already imports 20% of its refined fuel from India, a country that buys much of its crude from Russia. If geopolitical tensions escalate, those supply lines could vanish overnight, leaving California's military bases, airports, and shipping ports stranded without fuel.
$12-per-gallon gas and military vulnerabilities

Experts predict gas prices could double or triple as refining capacity shrinks. A recent study found Californians already pay $2 more per gallon than drivers in Oklahoma, the state with the cheapest gas. But if imports become unreliable, prices could soar to $10–$12 per gallon, crippling families and businesses alike.
"Their backup plan is to continue to source it from places like India," said petroleum expert Mike Ariza, who co-authored a report on California's energy outlook. "India buys their crude oil from Russia, so effectively gasoline and jet fuel… that we could be producing here."
The Governor's office dismisses these concerns, claiming "no credible concerns" exist about future fuel supply for the military. But energy policy expert Ronald Stein disagrees, arguing that the environmental logic behind California's policies may actually be counterproductive on a global scale. By shrinking in-state refining and relying on longer international supply chains, the state could be raising overall carbon emissions while simultaneously deepening its dependence on foreign fuel sources.
A warning from the Strait of Hormuz

Global oil markets are already under strain, with Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz disrupting nearly 20% of the world's oil supply. If foreign refineries face shortages, California—now dependent on imports—could be left scrambling.
"Every lost domestic barrel erodes surge capacity for military logistics," wrote analyst Danielle Walker. "This is not abstract policy—it is national security."
The solution? More refineries, not fewer

Wind turbines and solar panels generate electricity, but they can't produce the jet fuel, diesel, and gasoline that planes, ships, and trucks need to keep the world's 4th-largest economy moving — and that means refineries aren't optional.
Yet instead of building new ones, California is driving refineries out of state with punitive regulations. The result? Higher prices, fuel shortages, and a weakened military.
The warnings are clear: California's refinery collapse is a national security threat. If the state doesn't reverse course, it will soon be held hostage by foreign oil, leaving its military, economy, and families at risk.

For Europeans, the message is increasingly hard to ignore: the United States wants to provide less but still cash in on major contracts, all while the global economy reels from the consequences of American decisions.
A quiet, unavoidable drift

The two Franco-British-led "coalitions of the willing" for Ukraine and the Gulf have been derided as talk shops, but they are slowly becoming the seeds of an independent European defense coordination.
The European Political Community, launched by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2022, is gradually allowing for deeper strategic discussions.
Even Canada, of all countries, participated in the May 2026 Yerevan summit, indicating a vote of confidence in Europe’s nascent attempts to chart its own geopolitical path.
Most Europeans would still prefer a closer relationship with the United States. They are not rushing toward divorce; they are being forced into a slow, painful separation by a partner they can no longer rely on.
Just as the massive drop in European tourism to America is driven by fear of arbitrary searches and detention at airports, so too is Washington’s erratic behavior on the world stage, forcing even its closest allies to quietly distance themselves.

It’d be fun of the Trump DOJ mentioned in open court that the state of the People’s Republik Of Minnesota was still using lots and lots of fossil fuels for their operations, and that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a Democrat, himself uses lots of fossil fuels for his SUVs and airplane flights
Trump administration moves to block Minnesota climate change lawsuit against oil companies
President Donald Trump’s administration moved Monday to block a lawsuit Minnesota officials filed almost six years ago alleging oil companies and a petroleum trade group deceived state residents about climate change.
The U.S. Department of Justice, the administration’s law enforcement arm, filed an action in federal court in Minneapolis arguing that the federal government has the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, not states, and that Minnesota officials are trying to improperly impose their policy preferences on the rest of the country.
“The Constitution does not tolerate such a conflict,” Justice Department attorneys argued in the filing. “Nor does it allow Minnesota to national its regulatory powers.”
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a Democrat, filed a lawsuit in state court in June 2020 against ExxonMobil, Koch Industries, the American Petroleum Institute and refinery company Flint Hills Resources, a Koch subsidiary, accusing them of consumer fraud and deceptive trade practices. At least 15 other states brought similar lawsuits, including Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island.
They filed the suit 6 years ago, so, the PRM and Ellison have had plenty of time to practice what they preach and stop using fossil fuels which they consider Evil. Yet, they haven’t. They have over 475 aviation facilities, from massive international airports to small public and private to heliports to seaplane ports, and, yet, they are all operating. And more opened in the last 6 years. Very strange

If you have to give bribes and “sweeteners” to get everyone to cooperate (at the barrel of the government force), maybe this stuff isn’t that good?
Newsom is running out of climate sweeteners
MONEY BAG: California climate politics are entering their austerity era.
Gov. Gavin Newsom is preparing to unveil his final May budget revision this week with an eye toward cementing his legacy. Broadly, he’ll be helped by an expected surge in tax revenue tied to anticipated tech company IPOs later this year, as our POLITICO colleagues Eric He, Tyler Katzenberger and Nicole Norman reported.
But on climate, he’s confronting an awkward reality Democrats long tried to avoid: California’s ambitious emissions-cutting regulations are no longer generating enough money to soften the political blow.
Since its inception in 2006, California’s cap-and-trade program was sold not just as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but as a machine for generating roughly $4 billion annually for projects lawmakers could bring back to their districts — electric school buses, wildfire prevention, affordable housing near transit, discounts on electric bills, clean water projects and incentives for farmers and drivers to adopt cleaner technologies.
I wonder how much of that money was being spent as intended, and how much ended up going to NGOs and donors and friends as graft and slush money?
That money became the political sweetener that helped sustain support for an otherwise costly and contentious climate agenda, securing votes from recalcitrant moderate Democrats (and even the occasional Republican) eager to deliver tangible benefits back home.
But the sweetener is now running out — leaving Newsom holding the bag. It’s a painful pivot for the likely 2028 presidential contender, who just last year relished rebranding the carbon market from “cap and trade” to “cap and invest” as a nod to the community groups clamoring to spend the program’s revenues.
It was basically a BS program designed to hide how expensive this all is, and now Californians are going to pay for it. More. But, then, the majority of them voted for this cult insanity. Have fun! And maybe they should all give up their own use of fossil fuels.

Why the U.S. job market is so hard, especially for recent college graduates
The American job market is behaving in a way that economists are struggling to explain. The economy is growing. Unemployment is low. And yet, for millions of workers, finding a job has become harder than at almost any other point in decades.
Amanda Munro, 32, followed every rule she had been taught. She earned a graduate degree, cultivated expertise in data science and environmental policy, and began establishing a track record as a policymaker, negotiating line by line with foreign governments over rules designed to protect sharks and rays on the high seas. When she was laid off last year as part of the federal cuts imposed by the U.S. DOGE Service, she expected to find another job quickly. Instead, she ended the year sorting packages in a warehouse in Portland, Oregon, earning $19 an hour. “It feels like the rules changed,” she said.
The struggle is felt across the U.S. workforce, but for the millions of students graduating this spring, it arrives at the worst possible moment.
A government worker bee who surely thinks she’s better than everyone else, who focused on the enviro-weenie policy part, who fancies herself a bigwig in policy and knows people in other countries, and is now finding it hard to get something comparable in the private sector? Huh. It’s almost like all that schooling and experience is not worth much.
Layoffs remain low by historical standards, but they vary widely across sectors. “In some narrow sectors, certainly tech and media included, it is low hire and some fire,” Ullrich said.
They’re replacing workers with AI, along with realizing they do not need that many employees. Plus, they do not need all the super-woke Millennials and Gen Z, people who have low work skills, low work motivation, and are pains in the ass to work with.
Another reason hiring has slowed is uncertainty about artificial intelligence. Even though the technology has not yet replaced large numbers of workers, it is already shaping how companies think about hiring. “I don’t think this is AI displacement,” said Ben Zweig, chief executive of Revelio Labs, a workforce data company. “What we’re seeing is anticipatory.” Instead of rushing to bring on new workers, some firms are waiting to see how the technology evolves and which tasks it will eventually take over.
Well, at least the WP notices that.
AI is also reshaping the hiring process itself. Recruiters say they are being overwhelmed with applications, many generated by AI, making it harder to identify strong candidates. “Everyone knows it’s a problem,” Zweig said. “We’re getting flooded.”
The yutes are taking the easy route for their applications, and it shows.
Samantha Gilstrap, 28, graduated from journalism school in 2019 and has barely caught her breath since. She entered the job market as the pandemic began, later lost a digital reporting job at WUSA9 during industry consolidation, and has since applied for hundreds of jobs. Most applications have led nowhere. “The only times I’ve been able to interact with humans is if it’s a who-you-know basis,” she said. She is now couch surfing to save money. “At some point, if things don’t work out, I will be walking into the nearest McDonald’s.”
If she didn’t graduate from a big-time journalism school, good luck, because the big outlets are full of these Elites. Couple that with local outlets slowly dying when it comes to news gathering (a much longer conversation), and the jobs dry up.
Her experience reflects a broader pattern among recent graduates. The unemployment rate for people ages 22 to 27 who recently completed college hit 5.6 percent in the final months of 2025 — well above the 4.2 percent rate for all workers, according to national data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Nearly half of that age group was underemployed, meaning people were working in jobs that did not require a degree, the highest share since 2020.
Well, so many are getting worthless degrees, ones that have little to no value in the private workplace, and might even be detrimental to getting a job, because even hardcore Progressive companies do not want annoying wackjobs with degrees ending in Studies causing problems. They’d rather hire older people who just get the work done.
Christine Beck, a career coach who works with early-career job seekers, said employers are asking more of the people they do hire. “Companies are trying to do more with less,” she said, pointing to a growing emphasis on candidates who can lead projects and expand an organization’s capacity without adding headcount.
That’s almost always been the case, and they really cannot depend on the Yutes to get this done. They do not like to do the work they’re told to do, much less go above and beyond.
Munro, the ocean policy expert, spent her months working in the warehouse alongside a former graphic designer and an ex-IT contractor whose job with the Forest Service had ended when his contract ran out, each with their own version of the same story.
In January, she was rehired by the federal government. The return brought relief, but did not erase her fear that the ground was still shifting.
In other words, the only place so many have any value is in being government drones. And the WP missed the point that all this high end education does not provide real skills.
