The Food and Drug Administration mysteriously ousted Tracy Beth Høeg as acting director of its drug evaluation center on May 15. By August, the agency had approved an mRNA flu shot she openly questioned, a children's diabetes drug she had held up, and a melanoma treatment its own career staff doubted. She still does not know who ordered her firing, but sources point to a White House-installed counselor with close ties to pharmaceutical executives.
Asked to resign three days after Commissioner Marty Makary stepped down, Høeg refused. Agency lawyers said the decision came from "someone way above their pay grade." The official named on her termination memo has since disowned it, she says, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. learned of the firing only afterward, according to the New York Times.
Journalist Paul Thacker told Høeg that his HHS contacts point to Chris Klomp, the Medicare chief who also became HHS chief counselor in February, as the likely architect. Those sources say pharmaceutical CEOs "have Chris Klomp on the phone all the time." When Thacker relayed that Klomp had likely pushed her out, Høeg replied, "You're not the first person to suggest that to me."
mRNA flu vaccine approved despite former drug chief's safety concerns

In February, under Makary and vaccine center director Vinay Prasad, the FDA would not even accept Moderna's mRNA flu shot application for review, only to reverse itself about two weeks later. By mid-May, all three officials were gone, and on Aug. 5, mFlusiva won approval for adults 50 and older.
In a trial of more than 40,000 people, Moderna's shot reduced the odds of flu-like illness by 27% versus a standard-dose vaccine. Agency reviewers and the company flagged no new or serious safety concerns, though approval for those 65 and older hinges on a follow-up study.
Høeg told Thacker the shot raises "very concerning safety issues." "I don't think we can say that the benefits outweighed the harms," she said.
Sanofi diabetes drug approved for children without advisory panel meeting

Career staff supported extending Sanofi's Tzield to newly diagnosed patients 8 and older under Makary's fast-track voucher program, but Høeg objected. Sanofi withdrew from the fast track, and the agency blew past its April 21 deadline, STAT reported.
On June 12 — less than a month after Høeg's firing — the FDA granted accelerated approval for newly diagnosed children 8 to 17, based on a marker of insulin production rather than clinical outcomes. The drug, which carries risks including cytokine release syndrome and viral reactivation, never went before outside advisers.
"That was supposed to go to an advisory committee," Høeg said. "And that's a drug that's given in children. And if you look at the pivotal clinical trial at that stage of the disease, there's no clear evidence of clinical benefit for these children with type 1 diabetes."
Twice-rejected melanoma drug wins approval after maker lobbies White House

Replimune's RP1, a modified virus injected directly into melanoma tumors, failed twice before the FDA — in July 2025 and again in April. The company then appealed to the White House, which leaned on health regulators to take another look, the Wall Street Journal reported. Replimune announced a third attempt on May 29, two weeks after Høeg left.
FDA reviewers had argued the trial's design made it hard to tell how much of the benefit came from RP1 rather than Opdivo, a second drug patients received. An outside panel nonetheless voted 10-3 in the company's favor, and the FDA granted accelerated approval Aug. 6. Replimune has priced it at $450,000 per course.
"It went against everything the career staff had said about the limitations in the data," Høeg said. On the White House lobbying, she added: "One has to wonder, is it approved based on the data or do they just know the right people?"
Drug linked to eight deaths still sold in U.S.

Tavneos, an Amgen pill for a rare autoimmune disease, remains on the U.S. market despite her center's move to pull it over alleged trial manipulation. Europe revoked the drug's license in August. The FDA has also tied it to 76 cases of liver injury, including eight deaths. "People have died taking this drug and we don't know if it works," Høeg said. Amgen disputes the allegations and has requested a hearing. Until the FDA commissioner rules, patients will keep taking a medication the agency itself says rests on manipulated data, while the official who tried to pull it is out of a job.

Canadian winters threaten to freeze Europe

In the depths of the North Atlantic, a vast system of swirling currents carries warm tropical waters north, preventing Europe from freezing.
But as climate change takes effect, this oceanic heat pump will weaken and might even fizzle out. If it does, Europe could be plunged into far lower temperatures.

A colder-than-usual patch of water just south of Greenland, nicknamed the “cold blob,” has some scientists worried that this slowdown in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is already well under way.
Other researchers have examined climate models, surveyed sea temperature records and run simulations to conclude that the ocean could turn on us sooner than previously thought.
While this process would unfold over many decades, a severe slowdown or collapse of the AMOC would disrupt Europe’s agriculture, infrastructure, welfare and economy on a scale that would make this past summer’s heat and fires look like mild memories of calmer times.
The continent could face glacial winters and dry summers, surging sea levels and ferocious windstorms.
Until recently, this prospect was considered remote: A nightmare scenario trotted out to warn of the catastrophic dangers of unchecked climate change. But as research on the likelihood of a major slowdown or – less likely – a total collapse mounts, governments are beginning to take it seriously and trying to work out how to minimise the damage.

The United Kingdom is spending millions on an early-warning system. Iceland has declared an AMOC collapse a national security risk. The Netherlands is investigating what a slowdown might mean for its sea defences. Finland is examining the potential consequences. And Nordic ministers have begun discussing the threat.

The sense of alarm has also reached Brussels, where last year Teresa Ribera, the European Union’s green transition chief, suggested adding the AMOC “to the list of national security acronyms in Europe”.
For policymakers, the AMOC’s instability poses an unusual challenge: How do you prepare for a far-off disaster that may never happen – but that, if it does, would disrupt life in Europe on an unthinkable scale?

“It is irresponsible to wait for absolute certainty before preparing,” Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Iceland’s climate minister, told Politico, part of the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network. “Because, by the time the consequences become undeniable, it may already be too late to prevent them from happening.”
“This is not about panic or alarmism,” he added. “It’s just responsible governance.”
That sinking feeling

The AMOC’s engine lies in the North Atlantic, where cold, salty water sinks deep into the ocean. That sinking helps pull more warm water north – driving a circulation that has shaped Europe’s climate for millennia.
It helps explain why London doesn’t have Ottawa’s cold winters, despite the British capital being about six degrees of latitude – or 420 miles – further north than the Canadian city. It’s also part of why Iceland and Europe’s northern countries don’t suffer a Siberian climate.

But climate change is now threatening to disrupt this long-stable motor. As Greenland’s ice sheet melts and heavier rainfall adds more freshwater to the North Atlantic, the sea becomes warmer and less salty – and therefore less dense. It sinks less readily, weakening the circulation.

This can set off a feedback loop: Weaker currents carry less salt north, further freshening the water and slowing the AMOC even more. The fear is that, with enough warming, the churn could slow significantly or even stop.
If that sounds familiar, chances are it’s because of the 2004 disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow, which imagines the shutdown of Atlantic ocean currents triggering a flash freeze that plunges the world into a new ice age overnight. There is no evidence that such an extreme and rapid scenario is possible.
And yet, the danger isn’t confined to some distant future. Even if a full AMOC collapse would unfold over many decades, probably beyond the end of this century, parts of the system could start failing much sooner – with consequences felt well before the currents grind to a halt.
“Bits of the AMOC could begin collapsing on the journey to the full collapse,” said Laurie Laybourn, a fellow at Chatham House and director of the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative. “It’s a process that would have disruption along the way.”

Scientists are particularly worried about the subpolar gyre, a circular current south of Greenland that helps power the AMOC. Some studies suggest its water-mixing function could begin shutting down as early as the 2040s, triggering major changes within as little as a decade.
A collapse of the gyre would not plunge all of Northern Europe into the deep freeze associated with a full AMOC shutdown. But it could bring significantly colder winters and increase the risk of drought.
“When exactly is hard to say, but I do think there’s a substantial risk that it can happen within the coming 20 years,” said Swinda Falkena, a researcher studying the subpolar gyre at Utrecht University. “It basically would mean you need to start planning now.”
For the AMOC as a whole, scientists still don’t know at what point the currents could cross their so-called tipping point, after which a collapse into a very weak state becomes inevitable. Nor do they know how close they are to crossing it. Estimates range from global warming of 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures – a level the world has just reached – to 8 C.

While scientists debate the extent and onset of current disruption, they agree global warming will weaken the AMOC.
In 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded the AMOC is very likely to weaken by 24 per cent to 39 per cent relative to pre-industrial levels this century.
“The risks,” said Mr Jóhannsson, the Icelandic climate minister, “are appearing more serious than previously understood.”
Freezing future

Scientists are starting to sketch out what Europe could look like after an AMOC collapse.
In winter, storms could lash the continent, fuelled by the stark temperature difference between a newly frigid north and the warm-as-ever south.
Arctic sea ice could push south toward Scotland and the Nordic fjords. Icebreakers might be needed in the Baltic Sea. Amsterdam’s canals could freeze solid, as cold snaps send temperatures plunging to minus 20 C in the Netherlands and minus 40 C in Scandinavia.

Drought in West Africa could drive migrants northward as the tropical rainbelt gets pushed south. Meanwhile, Iceland could face economic devastation as fish stocks collapse, according to a scenario researchers drew up for the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Along Europe’s North Atlantic coast, higher sea levels could worsen flooding and push saltwater into low-lying farmland. Summers would still bring extreme heat, but a decline in rainfall could compound water shortages. One paper found that in the U.K., land suitable for crop farming would fall from 32 per cent today to 7 per cent after an AMOC collapse.
Concern over these possible impacts is starting to shape government planning.
Iceland brought the threat to the Nordic Council of Ministers this spring.
In Finland, Sari Multala, climate minister, launched an assessment this summer of what an AMOC slowdown could mean for the country.

The Netherlands is conducting a similar assessment, with a particular focus on the threat to its sea defences.
One of the first lines of defence against an AMOC collapse is noticing when it starts.
The British Government has poured £81m into a research programme to create an early-warning mechanism for two key AMOC-linked systems that may themselves be approaching a point of no return: The Greenland ice sheet and the subpolar gyre.

“We’re trying to bring together teams to better observe, model and forecast tipping points, so that we might be able to respond better to them,” said Gemma Bale, one of the two scientists leading the programme.
But the monitoring network remains precarious. Many of the arrays are financed through short-term research grants, some of which run out by 2028.
In the United States, for example, Donald Trump’s administration decided to cut ocean observation funding and dismantle the buoys earlier this year, then backtracked after an outcry.
For scientists, the episode underscored the problem with treating long-term ocean monitoring as a string of short-term research projects. What they want instead is a permanent, internationally funded observing system – infrastructure on the scale governments already support for weather forecasting or space research.

The European Commission made a start this summer, announcing €92m in funding for ocean observation; a pledging event in September raised the amount to €220m. AMOC scientists welcomed the money but said a reliable Atlantic-wide system would require more.
“You need about €500 million or €1 billion per year, and then you can measure the s**t out of the oceans,” said Sjoerd Groeskamp, a researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. “Which sounds like a lot, but it’s not. The particle accelerator [at CERN] has a budget of €1bn per year, right? The James Webb telescope was €10bn.”
Compounding problems

Many of the impacts of an AMOC shutdown would compound problems Europe already faces as the planet warms, including drought, extreme weather and rising seas.
That means many of the necessary preparations are familiar: strengthening infrastructure against weather extremes, investing in coastal flood protection and building less brittle supply chains.

“We can identify some things that are no regrets,” said Laybourn, the Chatham House fellow. He pointed to retrofitting buildings, restoring nature to make agriculture more resilient and supporting countries in Africa where monsoons could be disrupted. “There are some things that work no matter what’s going to happen.”
The most important no-regret measure is also the only one scientists say can reduce the risk of the AMOC collapsing in the first place: cutting planet-warming emissions.
That message is increasingly being echoed by governments most exposed to the threat.
“The most important thing we can do to limit temperature increase is to reduce emissions rapidly,” said Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, the Norwegian climate minister, when asked how his country is approaching the risk of an AMOC shutdown.
Mr Jóhannsson compared his country’s reaction to the AMOC threat to the way rising seas have pushed Pacific island states to demand stronger global climate action.

“For us, the possibility of AMOC collapse is not an abstract scientific question,” he said. “It’s basically an existential one, because we know the destabilisation of AMOC would bring profound disruption to our infrastructure, our ecosystems and our way of life.”

All over social media, people want to know if there will be food shortages in 2027. Coming into this year, the UN was warning that global hunger had reached an unprecedented level. Now we are facing a global fertilizer crisis, a global energy crisis, widespread droughts, a Super El Niño and World War III all at the same time. Of course global hunger is going to get even worse in the months ahead. Nobody can deny that. Wealthy nations such as the United States will theoretically be in the best shape, but even here in the U.S. approximately 1 out of every 7 people already live in food insecure households. Rapidly rising food prices will definitely be very painful for us, but for millions of people that live in deeply impoverished countries much higher food prices could suddenly make it impossible for them to buy enough food to properly feed their families.

How would you feel if members of your family were extremely hungry but you didn’t have anything to give them?
For many of us, that would be unimaginable.
Unfortunately, such a scenario could soon become a reality in needy households all over the planet.
For months, I have been warning that the global energy crisis and the global fertilizer crisis were going to have an enormous impact on food production.
Now harvest season is here, and the consequences are starting to become apparent. The following comes from a Wall Street Journal article entitled “Hormuz Gridlock Risks Global Food Crisis, International Chamber of Commerce Chief Says”…

Disruptions to a vital shipping route in the Middle East have created an energy shock. Now, a global food security crisis is brewing, warns the secretary-general of the International Chamber of Commerce.

The secretary general of the International Chamber of Commerce is a man named John Denton.

He is a legal expert on international trade and investment, and he is projecting that global grain prices could potentially increase by up to 80 percent…

The monthslong conflict between Iran and the US has curbed the flow of goods through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway many countries rely on for imports of critical inputs like fertilizers and natural gas.
According to Denton, if the strait is not reopened, grain prices could rise by up to 80%, which would be particularly hard on the economies of import-dependent countries. He added that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has caused a shortage of about 2.7 million tons of fertilizer on the world market.

Less fertilizer means less food.

That is the bottom line.
If we do see such a spike in global grain prices (and they have already been rising), an ICC-commissioned model determined that global food prices overall could increase by close to 70 percent…

A prolonged disruption to fertiliser and energy markets linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could push global cereal prices sharply higher, with potentially severe consequences for food security and public health, according to new modelling commissioned by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
In the study’s most severe scenario, global cereal prices rise by as much as 81% above 2020 levels. The shock also feeds through sharply to households, with consumer food prices in East Asia, the Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa rising close to 70% above a 2020 baseline.

In recent years, the world has not even come close to producing enough food for everyone.

Now global food supplies are going to get substantially tighter.
As a result, there will be a mad scramble for whatever is available, and this will really drive up prices.
In the end, a lot more people will be malnourished and a lot more people will die from starvation…

Conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Aberdeen and Scotland’s Rural College, the modelling shows how the shock would work its way through the global food system. Higher fertiliser and energy costs reduce nitrogen fertiliser use by approximately 37% and cereal productivity by up to 10%, tightening supply and raising prices for consumers.
For poorer households, these price increases translate into lower calorie consumption, less diverse diets and higher rates of underweight. Under the same severe and sustained scenario, the modelling suggests that the shock could contribute to approximately one million additional dietary health-related deaths in 2030 and leave 67 million more people underweight.

The burden would fall overwhelmingly on lower-income regions. South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia and the Pacific would account for around 80% of the additional mortality and more than 90% of the additional underweight burden. Modelled health outcomes would change little in higher-income regions.

The poorest nations will get hit the hardest.
But we will all be affected.
I asked Google AI to tell me what would happen if the type of scenario that the ICC is envisioning actually plays out. This is what I was told…

• Massive Food Inflation: Retail prices for bread, cereal, and packaged goods would skyrocket globally.
• Surging Meat Prices: Livestock feed costs would soar, forcing ranchers to cull herds and driving up the cost of beef, pork, and poultry.
• Severe Humanitarian Crisis: Lower-income nations that rely heavily on grain imports would face immediate, widespread food insecurity and potential famine.
• Geopolitical Instability: Historically, drastic food price spikes trigger civil unrest, protests, and political revolutions (similar to the 2011 Arab Spring).
• Protectionist Trade Policies: Major grain-exporting countries would likely ban or restrict exports to safeguard their domestic food supplies, worsening the global shortage.

That sounds about right.

There are some people out there that are touting the fact that they warned about this months in advance.
Of course there are others that were warning about all of this years in advance.
As long as commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains restricted, the global fertilizer crisis and the global energy crisis will both just continue to intensify.
Unfortunately, the Iranians are telling us that they will keep attacking commercial vessels that are traveling through the Strait of Hormuz until the United States agrees to their entire list of demands…

The Strait of Hormuz is going to remain closed until the United States accepts Tehran’s seven-day plan to reopen the waterway, Iran’s top negotiator and parliament speaker has said.
Iranian state-linked news agency Nournews, quoting ⁠Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, reported on Sunday that Washington made “some proposals through a mediator” days after the US replied ⁠to Iran’s diplomatic proposal.

The US should know “that the era of wasting time and dictating unilateral demands is over”, Ghalibaf said, adding Iran’s position remains “clear and definite”.

There is no way that the Trump administration will ever agree to all of Iran’s demands.
So on and on we go.
I realize that food prices are absurdly high now, but they are going to go even higher.
But as long as you have enough to eat, you should be very thankful, because there are many on the other side of the planet that are desperately hungry right now.
Yes, there will be food shortages in 2027.
At this stage, the debate is about how intense they will become.
Hunger is on the rise all over the planet, and the higher food prices go the worse it will get.

The Soviet Union covertly operated the world’s largest and most sophisticated known biological weapons program.[1] The Soviet program began in the 1920s and lasted until at least September 1992 but has possibly been continued by the Russian Federation after that.[1][2] Under a civilian cover organization named Biopreparat, 40 to 50 military-purposed biological research facilities existed throughout the Soviet Union. An anti-agriculture program, Ekologiya, also targeted crops and livestock.

Just like we are witnessing all over the world today, Soviet scientists were monkeying around with some of the deadliest bugs known to mankind.

One of those bugs was Yersinia pestis, a bacterium that caused the Black Death.
We know that they successfully weaponized Yersinia pestis in at least a couple of different ways…

During the mid to late 1980’s, Russian scientists at Biopreparat made a major breakthrough. They had begun to upgrade their arsenal of biological weapons via genetic modification. One of the first steps of such modifications included making a primitive sort of chimera. A chimera is a biological organism which has been altered so that the ‘new version’ also has characteristics of another biological organism. Russian scientists were experimenting with the idea of taking Y. pestis and inserting various other known toxins into the cells. One day, the announcement was made at Biopreparat that such a design had been successfully made. They inserted a plasmid containing the gene for myelin toxin into Y. pestis . The design was simple and disturbing. If a patient were diagnosed with pneumonic plague in time to be treated, the antibiotics would attack and lyse the plague cells, thereby releasing the plasmid coding for myelin toxin which would cause paralysis, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and changes in behavior. Heralded as a major triumph for Mother Russia, Alibek explained, “A toxin-plague weapon was never produced before the Soviet Union collapsed, but the success of this experiment set the stage for further research on bacteria-toxin combinations.” (Alibek 1999).

The next step was initiated by Deputy Director Sergei Netesov who suggested putting Venezuelan Equine Ecephalitis (VEE) into Y. pestis . The was based on the same idea of treating plague with antibiotics, thereby releasing something else. This time, however, the result would have more dramatic consequences. By the time VEE would have lysed from the bacterium, it would have bypassed most of the body’s defenses, allowing it to travel directly to the brain. The patient, being treated for plague, would be dead from encephalitis within 7 to 10 days. US intelligence combined with information gleaned from Russian defectors made the picture very clear for the US: Russia was creating superbugs for the purpose of biological warfare and among them were superversions of Y. pestis.

Please pay special attention to the two sections that I have put in bold.

In both of those instances, Soviet scientists were counting on the fact that pneumonic plague would be treated using antibiotics.
Of course we would treat any outbreak of pneumonic plague in our time the exact same way, because it would be the only defense that we have.
There was also a Russian defector in 1989 that spectacularly claimed that Soviet scientists had genetically-modified Yersinia pestis so that it would be completely immune to antibiotics…

In 1989 the defector Vladimir Pasechnik convinced the British that the Soviets had genetically engineered a strain of Yersinia pestis to resist antibiotics.[26] This triggered George H. W. Bush and Margaret Thatcher to pressure Gorbachev into opening for inspection several of his facilities. The visits occurred in January 1991.[26]

That was almost four decades ago.

What advances have Russian scientists made since that time?
In her latest book, Annie Jacobsen envisioned a scenario which “is remarkably similar in some ways to what occurred in real life in Irkutsk”…

In Biological War, Jacobsen asks readers to imagine what would happen if a sophisticated, genetically engineered form of pneumonic plague were accidentally released from a Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) facility in Siberia called the State Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR—or simply Vector for short. Jacobsen’s scenario is remarkably similar in some ways to what occurred in real life in Irkutsk on October 2: a single lab worker releases a strain of genetically engineered Y. pestis, and soon dies. But the ensuing consequences are far worse than what has so far occurred in real life.

Since it was a genetically-modified form of pneumonic plague that got released in Jacobsen’s book, global health authorities were not able to stop it from spreading.

By the end of Jacobsen’s book, nearly all of humanity had been wiped out…

Soon, the infected population swells beyond the control of medical responders and even police. In Jacobsen’s account, society itself soon breaks down, as thousands of incipient plague victims riot through the streets of Los Angeles, burning and looting everything in their path. As the plague spreads, it kills thousands, then millions, and as it does so, the infrastructure of modern society collapses.
In the end, only the Federal Government’s very last lines of defense hold: the “Devolution of Operations Plan” goes into effect to preserve continuity of government from bunkers and secret locations, while the Pentagon’s 18,730-strong Weapons of Mass Destruction Response Forces tries to maintain order amid the catastrophe.
In Jacobsen’s scenario, things don’t work out well for America—nearly everyone dies. Hopefully the results of the recent incident at Irkutsk won’t be quite as terrifying.

For now, health officials in the western world are assuring us that we don’t have anything to be concerned about, and the Russians are continuing to do their best to keep everyone calm…

Russia’s government played down concerns Monday sparked by media reports that a female scientist in Siberia might have died of exposure to the plague after a lab accident.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that the state health watchdog known as Rospotrebnadzor was the “lead agency with expertise in this area,” and he urged Russians to “listen to official information” from its “highly qualified professionals.”

I would be far more comforted if the Russians were not taking measures that indicate that they truly believe that there is some sort of a threat.
It is being reported that at least 5 hospitals in Siberia have been shut down and placed under quarantine…

Several hospitals have been shut down and placed under quarantine as the so-called ‘black death plague’ begins to take hold across Russia. A total of five hospitals have been closed for quarantine purposes in Siberia, following a suspected plague outbreak. The medical facilities have reportedly been shut for a minimum three-week quarantine period after a laboratory worker lost her life to an “unspecified form of plague”.

At one of those hospitals, pregnant women are actually being given pamphlets that discuss the plague…



We also learned today that Russia has initiated mandatory temperature checks for all passengers that are flying into Moscow from Irkutsk.
Why would they do that if there is no threat?
In addition, why were all public events in Irkutsk canceled if there is nothing to be concerned about?
Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan all seem to think that there is something to be concerned about, because each one of them has heightened border and sanitary controls for travelers coming over from Russia.
I don’t think that we are being told the truth.
Let us just hope that they can contain this outbreak before it gets out of control.
All forms of the plague are deadly, but pneumonic plague is the only form that can spread through the air from person to person…

• Pneumonic plague differs from bubonic plague, which can result from flea bites, and septicemic plague. All three can be transmitted via flea bites or coming into contact with infected bodily fluids.
• Pneumonic plague can also be transmitted through respiratory droplets expelled when a person, or an infected animal, sneezes or coughs.
• “Pneumonic plague is the most serious form of the disease and is the only form of plague that can be spread from person to person,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you get infected and you do not get antibiotics within the first 24 hours of showing symptoms, you will almost certainly die.
And if what has gotten loose in Russia is a genetically-modified version of pneumonic plague from the Soviet days, treating it with antibiotics might not even work.
So let’s see what happens.
The good news is that pneumonic plague has a very small incubation period.
If there are no more cases or deaths by the end of this week, we are probably in the clear.
But if more cases or deaths start popping up, we could be in very big trouble.

The Depopulation Race Before the Financial Collapse: Why I Believe the Globalists Are Killing Us Before We Can Revolt

Every crisis being manufactured right now is a cover story for a larger crime, a pattern I have watched repeat for over twenty years ^[2]. The mRNA Rollout Is a Biological Weapon, Not a Vaccine
It's abundantly clear that the mRNA platform is not a vaccine in any honest sense of the word. It is gene therapy, and in the hands of people who have openly discussed depopulation, it becomes a biological weapon. I have spoken with Pfizer's former head toxicologist Helmut Sturz, author of The Vaccine Mafia, and the evidence he has assembled points to deliberate design for harm rather than any genuine public health purpose. When you understand that the intellectual property does not reside in the vial but inside your own cells -- that Moderna effectively installs an operating system in your body ^[3] -- the entire enterprise reveals itself as something far more sinister than medicine.

The mechanism itself defies the vaccine label. These injections persist in tissues for hundreds of days, circulate through the bloodstream, cross the blood-brain barrier and lodge in organs. Self-replicating mRNA constructs can spread the spike protein payload and the replication engine from person to person ^[4]. Is There A Massive Cover Up Of An Outbreak Of Pneumonic Plague In Russia? Questions Swirl After A 28-Year-Old Scientist Suddenly Drops Dead

Why have the Russians changed their story so dramatically? We were originally told that a 28-year-old laboratory assistant at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute named Daria Shipilova had been exposed to pneumonic plague on September 25th after breaking a test tube. Subsequently, she was admitted to a hospital on September 29th but she did not improve. She reportedly died some time very late on October 1st or very early on October 2nd. And even though nearly 200 people that had contact with her have been isolated, health officials have been running around in protective suits, and a total of five hospitals in the Irkutsk region have now been placed under quarantine, the Russians are now telling us that there is nothing to be concerned about at all. In fact, they are now telling us that no test tube was ever broken and that Shipilova did not die of pneumonic plague.

What in the world is going on here?
What the Russians are saying clearly does not match up with what they are doing.
Why have so many emergency measures been triggered if there was never any emergency in the first place?
To me, it appears that there really was an emergency that the Russians are now desperately trying to cover up.
There are several different forms of plague.
The form of plague that is the most severe and the most contagious is pneumonic plague.

It is very aggressive and it kills very fast.
Unlike other types of plague, pneumonic plague does not require fleas or rats to spread.
In fact, can be passed very easily from person to person through the air.
If an infected person coughs, there is a good chance that people standing nearby will catch it.
If someone catches it and does not get antibiotics within the first 24 hours of showing symptoms, the bacteria will quickly destroy their lung tissue.
Without immediate treatment, the disease is almost always 100 percent fatal.

A widespread outbreak of pneumonic plague would have the potential to be absolutely catastrophic.
Is this why Russia’s top health official was suddenly rushed to the Irkutsk region late last week?…

A suspected plague outbreak has erupted in Russia — killing a young lab worker, forcing nearly 200 people into isolation and triggering accusations that Vladimir Putin’s regime is trying to keep the infection’s possible spread under wraps.
The alarm was raised in Siberia after a worker at an anti-plague laboratory died of the disease, which killed tens of millions in the medieval Black Death, according to a report from The Moscow Times.
Anna Popova, who heads Russia’s public-health watchdog, then rushed 2,600 miles from Moscow to the Irkutsk region as authorities quarantined a hospital and placed scores of people who had come into contact with the victim under medical observation.

The Russian government obviously believed that something unusual was going on.

And Axios is reporting that the White House is “monitoring” this story…

The White House is monitoring reports of a suspected plague case and a related quarantines in Russia, a Trump administration official told Axios on Sunday.

The White House must think that there is something to all of this.
Annie Jacobsen recently authored a book about this exact type of scenario, and her contacts inside the government are not being dismissive of this incident at all…



There are so many questions that we do not have answers to at this stage, but there are certain things that we do know.
We know for certain that Daria Shipilova worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute.
We also know for certain that she was admitted to the hospital and that she is now dead.
But the Russians are now claiming that Shipilova was not involved in any sort of lab accident, and they are also telling us that they found no evidence of pneumonic plague…



Hopefully the Russians are telling us the truth.
But I am not buying it.

Residents reported seeing people wearing protective suits, masks and gloves in the streets, while masks were distributed at kindergartens. The independent news outlet Baikal People, which operates outside Russia, cited a source close to law enforcement as saying officers from the Federal Security Service, or FSB, escorted ambulances transporting people who had come into contact with Shipilova for testing. The claim of FSB involvement has not been officially confirmed.

If there was no threat, why have five Irkutsk hospitals been placed under quarantine?…

The plague outbreak in Siberia, Russia has expanded w/5 hospitals now under QUARANTINE: Irkutsk Hospitals No. 1, No.3, No.10, Ivano-Matreninskaya Children’s Hospital, and an unnamed maternity hospital (Lyudi Baikala news, Moscow Times).
Quarantine is NOT voluntary. Even in the U.S., quarantine is among the most extraordinary measures gov’t can impose on American citizens who haven’t been convicted, or even accused, of committing a crime. Quarantine means being forcibly confined and medically examined by law. U.S. quarantine can be imposed on anyone infected by a legally quarantinable disease listed below (this can change). One should assume Russia’s quarantine protocols are even more severe.

If you get infected with pneumonic plague, there is a very good chance that you will not even realize it at first.
Initial symptoms include fever, chills, aches and upset stomach.
If you don’t realize that pneumonic plague may be a possibility, you would probably be tempted to go to bed and try to sleep it off.
But if you don’t address it right away, pneumonic plague will race through your body at a relentless pace.
If you are not treated with antibiotics within 24 hours, you will almost certainly die from it.
Can you imagine the panic that would be caused if pneumonic plague started spreading widely?
The level of fear would be off the charts.
What we witnessed earlier this decade would be like a Sunday picnic in comparison.
So let us hope that the Russians are telling us the truth.
Let us hope that there was no lab accident and that nobody died from pneumonic plague.
Because a pneumonic plague pandemic really would be a nightmare scenario.

The Great Middle East War has just entered a very dangerous new chapter. 100,000 troops under the control of the internationally-recognized government of Yemen are going to attempt to end the Houthi threat once and for all. Saudi Arabia will be assisting by conducting constant airstrikes on Houthi positions. In other words, all-out war is coming to the Arabian Peninsula. The United States will be providing intelligence and targeting data for this operation, but officials are telling us that the U.S. military will not be directly involved at this time. However, Axios is reporting that the U.S. could join the operation at a later date “should it go south”.

What this means is that there isn’t going to be an end to the Great Middle East war for a long time to come.
One of Iran’s core demands has always been an end to the fighting on all fronts.
Needless to say, what we are witnessing is the opposite of that.
Even in the most wildly optimistic scenario, it would take months to totally defeat the Houthis.
In a televised speech, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi announced that this new military operation will continue “until the country is liberated from the grip of *the terrorist militia”…

Yemen’s Saudi-backed, internationally recognised government said on Sunday it was launching a major ​military campaign to recapture all areas of the country controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis.

The government’s armed forces would press the offensive “until the country is liberated from the grip of *the terrorist militia,” Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi said in a televised address. A military spokesman later called on the Houthis to lay down their weapons.

The Houthis are crazed religious zealots.
They will never, ever lay down their weapons.
So there will be no surrender.
The Houthis will fight until they are either wiped out or they are victorious.
It appears that this will be the biggest conflict in the entire modern history of Yemen.

It is being reported that over 100,000 soldiers could be mobilized to battle the Houthis…

More than 100,000 Yemeni troops could be mobilized in the offensive, depending on the scale, the officials all said.
Riyadh has concluded it cannot enter new Yemeni peace negotiations with the Houthis while they remain in control of Bab al-Mandab, giving them significant global leverage, the Western diplomats and a Gulf official said.

The Houthis have a core group of around 20,000 to 30,000 dedicated fighters, but they can easily mobilize more.
They have been in control of Yemen’s capital Sanaa since 2014, and all previous efforts to dislodge them have failed.
Recently, they captured vast amounts of territory along the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and they haven’t been allowing Saudi oil tankers to travel through that very important chokepoint.
Now the goal is to take it all back.
The U.S. was asked to join this military operation, but that request was denied.
According to Axios, an anonymous U.S. official is insisting that our military “is not going to take kinetic action for now”…

• On Thursday, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid Bin Salman called Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to brief him on the planned operation and ask again for U.S. airstrikes against Houthi targets, the U.S. official said.
• A U.S. official said that the U.S. “is not going to take kinetic action for now.”
• Last week, President Trump was close to ordering a strike on the Houthis after a request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), but eventually decided to hold off.

However, we will be assisting the operation by providing “intelligence and targeting data”…
And apparently the door is being left open for the U.S. military to get involved in the operation at a future date “should it go south”…

The US could join Saudi Arabia’s operation against the Houthis should it go south, despite several previous refusals, Axios reported on Friday, citing American officials.
The operation, expected to be launched in the coming weeks in response to the increased assault by the terrorist organization on Saudi Arabia as well as its storming of Bab al-Mandab, will be led by Saudi-backed Yemeni forces on the ground and supported by Saudi air strikes.

I think that there is a very good chance that the operation will not go well.
The Houthis have had the upper hand for weeks, and in the last 48 hours they got even closer to Yemen’s third largest city…

In the last 48 hours, the Houthis have also made gains against government and local forces on strategic hilltops near Yemen’s Taiz, military sources said, advancing on the last road between the city and Aden on the southern coast.
Houthi control over the Taiz-Aden road would lead to an effective siege of the city, Yemen’s third-largest, inhabited by hundreds of ⁠thousands of civilians ​and where thousands of government forces are also stationed.

The fall of Taiz would be catastrophic for Yemen’s internationally-recognized government.
I don’t think that Saudi Arabia was eager for an all-out war with the Houthis, but at this stage they probably felt that they had no choice.
So now that one of their key allies is faced with all-out war, how will the Iranians respond?
Will they just sit on their hands as the Houthis get pummeled, or will they take action?
We shall see.
On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned Iran’s enemies that his nation is prepared to strike back “stronger than before”…

“If our enemies again choose the path of military confrontation, our response will be stronger than before, and we will defend ourselves with even more force,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at a gathering of foreign ambassadors.
“There is no military solution, nor any solution based on new sanctions,” he continued, adding “only negotiations based on justice and fairness” could end the conflict.

If the Houthis are able to hold their own, the Iranians may not get directly involved in what is happening on the Arabian Peninsula.
But if the Houthis start losing ground, Iran may feel compelled to intervene.
In any event, it has become clear that there will be no peace.
The Great Middle East War will be three years old this week, and now it has escalated to yet another new level.
The death and destruction that we have already witnessed has shocked the world, but much worse is coming.

If ‘climate change’ was so bad one would think they could have kept the name as (anthropogenic) global warming, but, here we are 35 years later

A Climate Change Rebrand
A few years ago, I covered the Yellow Vest protests in France, where workers rebelled against a fuel tax billed as a green measure. I interviewed protesters at German car plants lamenting the shift to electric vehicles, which reduces the number of jobs. Now, in Britain, I’m watching the same people who once campaigned for Brexit campaign against renewables, which they say have raised energy bills. (There’s something to that; read on.)
Across the West, the climate has become another battleground in the culture wars. That’s one reason why, despite an alarming list of deadly climate disasters around the world, you don’t hear as many politicians talk about the climate anymore. But that doesn’t mean they’re not thinking about it. Today I write about the politics driving a climate change rebrand. (snip)
All of the above could be making the politics of the green transition easier. Instead, across the West, they’ve become more difficult. Experts say even those committed to switching to renewables will often deliberately avoid the word climate, talking instead about “energy security” or “affordability.”

But why are politicians and others in power so hesitant to talk about the climate?
Right-wing populists on both sides of the Atlantic have taken aim at climate policies as a liberal elitist project that hurts working-class people.
In Europe, the people campaigning against “net zero” — the goal of getting carbon emissions to zero — accuse governments of driving up their energy bills. (Their arguments find traction in part because they’re not wrong. The process of constructing a grid that can efficiently distribute renewables comes with a price tag that some politicians have been reluctant to talk about, and that will drive electricity bills up, not down, at least for a few years.)
In the U.S., President Trump has aggressively doubled down on fossil fuels and calls climate change a “hoax.”

If she would refer back to her 1st paragraph, she might realize that citizens are tired of Elites and politicians forcing the climate cult policies on them, all while the same people who push cult dogma refuse to practice what they preach. Go figure. If I go to the doctor and he/she tells me to stop smoking while I can smell the cigarettes on them, would I stop smoking?

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) held a roundtable Monday, Sept. 28, titled "COVID-19 Hospital Protocols: Real Stories from Real People," his office said.The event was devoted entirely to what happened inside hospitals during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, according to his office. Johnson said 21 patients, family members, doctors and nurses testified, and his office had received 583 testimonies from 46 states as of Sept. 26.
The senator said he provided a platform "so that this kind of cruelty will not be repeated," according to his office. The roundtable follows Johnson's prior panel discussions, including a January 2022 event titled "COVID-19: A Second Opinion," which a group of doctors and medical experts joined to discuss the federal government's pandemic response, the capture of U.S. health agencies by pharmaceutical companies, and the vilification of doctors who sought to treat patients with inexpensive repurposed drugs ^[1][2].
Families Describe Discharge, Intubation at Hospitals

Brad Seiler said staff told him his wife, Gail, was "unsavable" and that a nurse said, "She'll be dead tonight, or before you even get home." Brad said Gail was discharged through a freight elevator used to transport bodies and out through doors used by funeral homes.
Gail survived and is "alive, healthy, active, and enjoying life," he said. She later described being treated at a Texas hospital after they asked, and she told them, she wasn't vaccinated ^[3].
Stephanie Williamson said her husband, Dave, died after decisions made without informed consent or family input. She said she was pressured into consenting to his intubation and that "my children never saw their father again." Cases of intubation without consent have been reported by other families, including Nicole Charlotte Hardison, who was given remdesivir without her consent and did not survive ^[4].
The accounts echo patterns reported across the country, where families said hospitals refused to administer ivermectin while instead using remdesivir and ventilators. Briana Ross of Georgia, for example, said the hospital treating her husband Jason refused ivermectin while administering remdesivir, fentanyl and other drugs before insisting on a ventilator ^[5].
Nurse, Doctor and Attorney Testify on Ivermectin Cases

Florida registered nurse Donna Lowery said she was fired after 31 years for advocating for a patient and recommending ivermectin; the patient later deteriorated and died, she said. Other nurses have described similar retaliation. California ICU nurse Gail Macrae said she pushed back against hospital COVID-19 protocols that she said violated medical ethics and resulted in increased harm to patients ^[6].
Florida physician Dr. John Littell, who was disciplined for prescribing ivermectin, said doctors must advocate for patients "abandoned by a healthcare system" and that "there is no healing without hope." The suppression of ivermectin as an early treatment has been documented by multiple sources, including studies that underdosed the drug or administered it too late to show efficacy, according to an interview with Dr. William Makis ^[7].
Attorney Ralph Lorigo described court cases; journalist Michael Capuzzo wrote that Lorigo won 72 cases and 69 patients survived, while in 140 cases hospitals defeated him or he could not reach court, all 140 patients died. Dr. Paul Marik, a top critical care physician, said patients are dying "unnecessarily and unlawfully" because hospitals prioritize expensive drugs like remdesivir while banning more effective and less costly treatments ^[8].
Johnson Cites Fear, Control; More Testimony Planned

Johnson said leaders used "fear of the unknown to gain undue power and control over our response to COVID." The roundtable was the first Johnson event devoted entirely to what happened inside hospitals during the pandemic, and his office said he plans to continue collecting and posting testimonies on his Senate website.
Johnson said, "It's not easy to read these testimonies. They are heartbreaking stories." The senator has previously called for transparency and has argued that federal health agencies have suppressed scientific data and vilified doctors who sought to treat patients with inexpensive and effective repurposed drugs ^[1][2].
Conclusion: Attendee Seeks Accountability; Records Sought

Dan Rudy, founder of Hope House Orlando, told The Defender he hopes for "truth, accountability and justice for those who are no longer here, and healing for the families left behind." Germany Threatens Russia, The Russians Threaten To Use Nuclear Weapons, And Trump Threatens Iran With Annihilation

A nuclear war is not going to start because everyone agrees that they want one to happen. Rather, a nuclear war will start because someone decides that the next escalation will still be manageable. At this moment leaders all over the world are engaged in a very foolish game of brinksmanship. They are all calculating how close to the edge they can go without falling over. In such an environment, it will only take one very stupid mistake to set off a chain of events that nobody will be able to control. We are now closer to nuclear war than we have ever been in our entire history, and that is a very dangerous place to be.

Most Americans do not realize that a military conflict between Russia and our allies in Europe could literally erupt at any time, and recently there have been some very alarming incidents…

In the past few weeks, an Italian Nato fighter has downed a Russian drone over Lithuania, a Russian frigate has fired emergency flares at a Danish military helicopter, and details of an official Lithuanian evacuation plan in the event of full-scale invasion have been reported.

There have also been a number of cyberattacks that have been blamed on the Russians.
Earlier today, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that his nation is “preparing for major hybrid attacks” and that Germany is ready to respond to such attacks “swiftly and very clearly”…

So exactly what is Merz saying?

Is he indicating that Germany will respond militarily to future “hybrid attacks” that are blamed on Russia?
The Ukrainians would love that.
They have been trying to drag NATO forces into the war for years.
Of course if our European allies get dragged into the war in Ukraine, we will get dragged into the war in Ukraine as well.

In a previous article, I discussed the fact that all 18-year-old men in Germany are now being required to report for mandatory military medical exams.

Obviously the Germans are preparing for a potential war with Russia.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin insists that the Russians have no intention of attacking Germany or any of our other European allies.
However, he is also warning that if the Russians are attacked they “will have to respond”…



That certainly sounds rather ominous.
Putin is also warning that if a war with Europe erupts it could easily escalate to “a fatal point of no return”…

“We must understand that the moment when nothing can be changed can come very quickly and unexpectedly for everyone. The logic of escalation and increasingly harsh retaliatory measures is leading to a fatal point of no return,” Putin said.

Needless to say, he was referring to the use of nuclear weapons.
There should be no doubt about that.
Putin is a strategist.
He realizes that he is outgunned by NATO’s conventional forces, and so if war with NATO erupts Putin says that it could become necessary to use unconventional weapons…

He eventually confirms that “if it comes to a direct attack on the Russian Federation – in this case we mean Kaliningrad, but may be some other territories as well – of course, naturally, immediately what will be on the agenda is the use … of all weapons that we are the disposal of our country.”
He says that with Nato a potential adversary “exceeding us,” Russia would not have “many means to counter such a threat,” and would need to use its “competitive advantages.”
But Putin says that the risk of using nuclear weapons is only serious if Nato’s threats against Russia are serious.

To me, it is very interesting that Putin mentioned Kaliningrad.
Lately, there have been some experts in the western world that have been suggesting that western forces could either seize or blockade Kaliningrad and use that as leverage to force a settlement of the war in Ukraine.
In response, the Russians have made it exceedingly clear that nuclear weapons could be used in such a scenario…

Russia’s warning that it could resort to nuclear weapons if NATO attempts to isolate Kaliningrad is raising new concerns that the heavily militarized Russian exclave could become a flashpoint between Moscow and the alliance, as experts warn the territory is already being used to pressure Europe through hybrid warfare.
Moscow warned NATO in a diplomatic document that it was prepared to use “the entire arsenal of forces and capabilities at its disposal, including nuclear weapons” if alliance members attempted to isolate Kaliningrad from the rest of Russia, Reuters reported Wednesday.
Kaliningrad, a Russian territory geographically separated from the Russian mainland, sits on the Baltic Sea between NATO members Poland and Lithuania and hosts significant Russian military assets, including elements of Moscow’s Baltic Fleet.

Of course this threat was not just conveyed by a diplomatic document that the general public did not get to see.

Meanwhile, they continue to bomb the living daylights out of Kyiv…

Here in the United States, President Trump just told the media that it appears that the terrorist that attempted to hijack a plane that was headed to Tel Aviv has links to Iran…

This could potentially be used as justification for another round of military strikes.
If the terrorist’s links to Iran can be confirmed, Trump is threatening to hit Iran “very hard”…

Trump also warned that if the link is established to Iran, the United States would retaliate.
“Oh they’ll be hit, very hard, don’t worry,” Trump said. “You just ask them. They know what happened. They’ll be hit very hard.”

During his exchange with the press, Trump had something else to say about Iran that was even more foreboding.
Trump declared that the Iranians will “either sign a very fair deal or they won’t exist any longer”.
That isn’t just a threat to attack again.
That is a threat to annihilate.
I truly hope that Trump was exaggerating.
And I truly hope that the Iranians are not taking him seriously.
Unfortunately, the Iranians have indicated that they are prepared to fight a “doomsday war” with the United States.
Needless to say, it takes “doomsday weapons” in order to fight a “doomsday war”.
So does Iran have weapons that they have not told us about yet?
It appears that the apocalyptic phase of World War III could be just around the corner, and that should deeply alarm all of us.

The months ahead are shaping up to be a time of war, economic problems, food shortages and global chaos. There is no end in sight for the war in the Middle East or the war with Russia. Meanwhile, global energy supplies and global food supplies both continue to get even tighter. We desperately need some sort of a diplomatic miracle, but talks with the Iranians have totally broken down and tensions between the Russians and our allies in Europe are higher than ever. Our deteriorating economy is the number one political issue in the U.S. during this election season, but the economic pain that we have experienced so far will be absolutely dwarfed by what is ahead.

On Thursday, it was being reported that the U.S. has decided to deploy a third aircraft carrier and a second Marine division to the Middle East…

The Trump administration has decided to deploy a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East, along with a second Marine division, a US official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt and an additional division of US Marines will deploy to US Central Command’s area of operations.
The move means that, until the US midterm elections, US President Donald Trump will have significantly greater military capabilities and a wider range of options for potential action against Iran.

Many were hoping that an end to the war was near.

These moves are an indication that a major escalation could be coming.
The Iranians have not backed down and they are not going to back down.
On Tuesday, they attacked three more commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz…

Three vessels reported being struck on Tuesday, September 29, in the area around the Strait of Hormuz as Iran appears to be lashing out to demonstrate that it is still threatening vessels. While it brings the total number of vessels struck to four so far this week, observers point to increasing oil flows and vessel traffic in the region.
UK Maritime Trade Operations reported the incidents, although few details were provided. It said that the information had come from verified sources but was delayed in being transmitted. It was unclear when the strikes took place. It identified all three incidents as involving tankers without details on the extent of the damage, while an unconfirmed report said one of the vessels was an LNG carrier.

Two of the vessels were identified in the tracking by the International Maritime Organization, with both being crude oil tankers flying the Liberian flag and sustaining damage. One VLCC, the Mersin Prosperity (299,319 dwt), is operated by ADNOC. The other tanker appeared to be a smaller vessel, possibly involved in the shuttle operations that have arisen to get oil from the Gulf states to tankers waiting south of the Strait in the Arabian Sea. This tanker was identified as Sinbad (115,949 dwt), and it was last reported at Fujairah. Both tankers appeared to be making the transit dark.

We have been able to get some oil through the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks.
But not nearly enough.
It would be wonderful if the Iranians were willing to make a reasonable deal, but they just aren’t budging.

In fact, talks with the Iranians went so poorly when Iranian officials came to New York that Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered them to leave early…

After little progress was made in weekend meetings between Iranian and Qatari mediators, Rubio lost patience and told the Iranians on Monday that Araghchi and his delegation had to leave New York immediately, according to the two officials, who were familiar with the decision and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an internal administration process.
Rubio, according to one official, determined that the Iranians had “overstayed their welcome” and that since the high-level meetings at the U.N. were over, they should leave.
Ararghchi and his team departed New York very early Tuesday.

What this means is that the global energy crisis is going to continue to get worse.

Meanwhile, Trump administration officials have announced that the U.S. will be releasing more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and they are strongly pressuring our allies in Europe to follow suit…

Even though fuel prices in Europe have risen to absolutely insane levels, European leaders have been hesitant to authorize the release of more strategic reserves.

The International Energy Agency, the ​West’s energy watchdog, has not yet asked Germany to release stocks, Germany’s economy ministry said. It was not clear when the ⁠IEA ⁠might meet next.
The US administration has ⁠been particularly frustrated with France ​and Germany, which US officials believe have not fully followed through on earlier commitments to release emergency oil and petroleum product ​stocks, Reuters has reported previously.
“It is in ⁠Europe’s best interest to work with the United States as we pursue multiple pathways to boost the supply of refined products and lower costs for consumers,” one of the sources, a US official, told Reuters.

As global supplies of fuel get extremely tight, we are seeing things happen that are absolutely unprecedented.
This week, the crack spread for diesel was hovering in a range of $108 to $122 per barrel.
The soaring cost of diesel is hitting farmers all over the planet extremely hard, and it is one of the factors that is driving up global food prices.
Zero Hedge is reporting that the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index increased by a whopping 13 percent during the third quarter of this year…

The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index (BCOMAGSP) posted its largest quarterly gain since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, as Black Sea disruptions, a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and mounting El Niño risks have formed what could be considered a perfect storm poised to drive food prices higher.
BCOMAGSP, which tracks 10 major crops including corn, soybeans, wheat, coffee, sugar, cotton, cocoa, and others, jumped 13% in the third quarter.

More than a dozen American trucking companies filed for bankruptcy in the past month, according to an industry news report. Some 16 firms, accounting for more than 250 jobs, filed for Chapter 7 or Chapter 11 proceedings, FreightWaves reported on Sept. 22, 2026. Diesel prices hit a record average of $6.53 a gallon on that day, as per the American Automobile Association (AAA). Diesel has increased $2.76 over the past year, according to AAA data.

The filings include carriers ranging from small owner-operators to fleets operating dozens of trucks, according to federal court filings and carrier records ^[1]. The report stated that at least 16 trucking, delivery and transportation companies entered bankruptcy proceedings between late August and Sept. 21.

Two of the largest companies listed, Xoco Transport and Globemaster, are entering Chapter 11 proceedings, according to FreightWaves. Xoco and Globemaster did not specify what led to their bankruptcy filings, according to federal court documents.

The wave of filings comes as the industry confronts a convergence of financial pressures, including record diesel costs, rising insurance premiums and a freight market that has struggled to recover from a three-year downturn ^[2]. Industry analysts have described fuel as the lifeblood of the trucking industry, and record prices add pressure on freight operators already operating on thin margins.

Filings Include Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 Cases
Of the 16 trucking companies listed in FreightWaves reporting, eight filed Chapter 11 and seven are liquidating assets through Chapter 7, according to the report. The FreightWaves report noted that the filings include Chapter 11 cases involving Globemaster Incorporated and Xoco Transport, both of which remain open for business while working with the bankruptcy court and creditors on a payment plan ^[1].

Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows a company to reorganize its finances under court supervision while continuing operations. Chapter 7 bankruptcy involves the liquidation of all assets and the closing of the business ^[3].

The distinction matters for employees and creditors. Chapter 11 cases may preserve jobs and allow vendors to recover a portion of what they are owed, while Chapter 7 cases typically result in layoffs and asset sales.

Xoco Transport and Globemaster did not specify what led to their bankruptcy filings, according to federal court documents. The FreightWaves report stated that the filings span multiple states and include carriers of varying sizes, from small owner-operators to fleets operating dozens of trucks ^[1].

Diesel Prices Reach Record Average
Diesel hit a record average of $6.53 a gallon on September 22, according to AAA. The price has increased $2.76 over the past year, according to AAA data. The Independent reported the diesel spike came amid the impact of President Donald Trump's war with Iran.

The connection between geopolitical conflict and fuel prices is direct in the trucking industry. Companies typically have to lay off workers and sell equipment to stay afloat, ASM Group wrote. Those actions lower shipping capacity and reduce revenue opportunities, the analysis stated.

The dynamic creates a downward spiral for carriers. As companies sell equipment to raise cash, they reduce their ability to haul freight, which in turn reduces revenue.

Layoffs cut costs but also reduce the workforce available to service customers. The ASM Group analysis suggested that these measures, while necessary for short-term survival, can accelerate a company's decline by eroding its competitive position.

A FreightWaves report published in March 2026 described how payment terms in the freight industry compound cash flow problems for small carriers and owner-operators ^[4]. The report stated that brokers often wait 30 to 45 days or longer to release payment after a load is delivered, while truck payments, fuel bills, insurance premiums, and driver paychecks come due immediately. The report described this gap as structural and baked into how freight payment terms work, calling it the number one cash flow killer for small carriers since the first rate confirmation was signed.

Other Cost Pressures and Seasonal Freight Slows
Deloitte said in a July analysis that labor, insurance, maintenance, and regulatory compliance costs continue to escalate. Hauling freight has busy and slow seasons, according to the Deloitte report.

During slower months, companies may not generate enough revenue to cover cost increases, the report stated. The diesel spike is one of several financial pressures cited by industry analysts.

Insurance costs have emerged as a particularly severe burden. A FreightWaves report published in August 2026 detailed how trucking leaders David Parker of Covenant Logistics and Max Fuller of U.S. Xpress discussed the impact of nuclear verdicts on carrier survival ^[5].

Officials and business owners said they are seeking ways to cut costs or pass higher fuel expenses on to customers.

Raptor Roll Offs, a Colorado waste management and dumpster rental business that uses diesel trucks in the Denver area, may need to pass higher fuel costs on to customers, owner George Dempsey told CBS News Denver. "We're holding on as long as we can," Dempsey said. "We can't absorb it all ourselves, and so you have this trickle effect."
Farmers and Food Banks Report Higher Operating Expenses

The Atlanta Community Food Bank said it will spend an extra $100,000 this year on diesel, money that otherwise would have gone to feed families, according to supply chain officer Kenneth Hill. "That would actually translate to about 122,000 meals that we would be able to provide if we didn't have to spend that on unexpected diesel fuel prices," Hill told CBS News Atlanta. Georgia diesel prices averaged $6.32 a gallon on Friday, up from $3.54 a year ago, according to AAA.
Ranchers rely on diesel-powered trucks and water pumps, and Andrew Coppin, CEO of Ranchbot, told CBS News that diesel is the single biggest input into many farming operations outside of labor. "If it's an F-250, a Ram 2500 or a Silverado, we're talking 1-ton diesel trucks, and on a good day they are getting 12 miles to a gallon," Coppin said. He noted his company has seen a major increase in inquiries from ranchers due to surging diesel prices.
Marty Gray, owner of Gray Farms in Watseka, Illinois, told CBS News Chicago that he is thinking about diesel when he wakes up in the morning, and about the trucks running and the grain elevator. Gray said his family-owned farm is facing tight margins as harvest season gets underway and is trying to decide whether to fill fuel tanks now or wait. The cost of diesel hit a record high of nearly $6.61 a gallon this week, and farm equipment that last year cost $70 to $80 an hour to run now costs about $180 to $200 an hour, according to figures shared by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau [4].
Diesel Costs Feed Into Inflation and Freight Expenses

Diesel is widely used in commercial trucking, agriculture, and construction, and rising prices can increase the cost of transporting goods across the country, according to economists. A separate report from the International Monetary Fund warned that the war in the Middle East has delivered a "major global energy supply shock" that will push up prices and force a downgrade to world economic growth, according to Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva [5].
Export Ban Proposal Draws Mixed Assessments

Some Republican lawmakers are calling for the U.S. to ban diesel exports to lower costs. The U.S. refines more diesel than it can use domestically, with energy companies selling the remainder abroad, according to the CBS News report. 69 Trillion Gallons Of Rain Will Fall On The United States – What We Are Experiencing Is Not Even Close To Normal

A colossal “hybrid storm” is dumping almost unthinkable amounts of rain over the middle of the nation right now. The remnants of two hurricanes have combined with a very powerful upper level low to create a historic deluge that will be hammering us for days. Earlier this year I kept warning my readers that the Super El Niño of 2026 would bring absolutely crazy weather to the United States, and at first there were some people out there that didn’t want to believe me. But now we are being hit by one natural disaster after another, and experts are warning that what is ahead is going to be even worse.

According to meteorologist Ryan Hall, from Sunday to next Wednesday a total of 69 trillion gallons of rain will fall on the United States…



I have never seen anything like this, and all of this rain is going to cause tremendous flooding.

In fact, severe flooding has already begun in the Southwest…

A major flood event is unfolding across the southwestern and central United States as residual tropical moisture from two hurricanes clashes with another storm swinging in from the west. This three-pronged weather event comes just days after some areas of the Southwest were saturated by heavy rain, resulting in an even higher risk of flash flooding.

New Mexico has been hit particularly hard.

After a 20 foot tall dam wall was breached, water came pouring into the small rural community of Garfield, New Mexico…

Floodwaters breached a 20-foot dam wall in southern New Mexico on Tuesday, sending water into Garfield as tropical moisture fueled dangerous flooding across the Southwest.

Video captured flooding in the community after the breach, marking a sharp escalation in a flooding emergency that had already prompted residents near McLeod Dam to evacuate.

Earlier Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency after dam operators and county officials reported that failure was imminent.

Of course that wasn’t the only area that was suddenly underwater.

CBS News reported that the rain was coming down in some parts of the Southwest at a rate of 4 inches per hour, and over 60 flash floods occurred…

Heavy rain has already flooded some roads in southern New Mexico, trapping drivers in cars until the waters receded.

Those rains Tuesday put the McLeod Dam in Dona Ana County in southern New Mexico on the brink of failing. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency due to the dam, while county officials issued evacuation orders for the region. A county spokesperson told CBS News that pumps were being brought in to pump water downstream of the dam and alleviate the pressure on it.

More than 60 flash floods were reported across the Southwest from Monday to Tuesday night, with rainfall rates in some areas as high as 4 inches per hour.

Today, flood watches were issued in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Over the next 48 hours, the rainfall is going to be relentless.
The good news is that this “hybrid storm” will ultimately pass.

The bad news is that the Super El Niño of 2026 hasn’t even peaked yet, and it will continue to produce more epic storms.

Scientist Daniel Swain has admitted that this El Niño is so “monstrous” that we “don’t have a categorization for this”…

Well, this one is shaping up to be monstrous. Though to be clear, that isn’t an actual category. That tops out at “very strong.” We don’t have a categorization for this.

Interestingly and alarmingly, the forecast for this fall suggests that it’s going to strengthen so much more that it will no longer matter which index we use, it will most likely be record breaking by late autumn either way. It’s going to further separate from the pack. This year is going to be tumultuous.

This Super El Niño has already prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency, and now a colossal “Kelvin wave” that has been created by this Super El Niño “is arriving along the California coast”…

An oceanic Kelvin wave, a kind of slow-moving planetary wave that carries energy and warm water across vast distances, is arriving along the California coast, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist with the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“Sea levels are going to be noticeably higher than usual,” Swain said.

The wave comes amid a flurry of other oddities brought on by the strong El Niño: Warmer water temperatures along portions of the California coast, unusual sightings of sea life typically seen in warmer waters and a hyperactive hurricane season in the Pacific.

Everyone is freaking out because this Kelvin wave is going to cause water levels to increase substantially.

In some areas, we could see the Pacific Ocean rise by a foot or more.

But what is really concerning authorities is what will happen when huge storms start rolling in during the months ahead…

If the rising waters coincide with other climatic events, such as rainstorms and high tides, the phenomenon could swallow beaches, chew away bluffs and coastlines, and submerge streets, homes and businesses.

“This coming Kelvin wave is just the beginning,” said Dr Jonathan Warrick, a research geologist at the US Geological Survey. “The thing to look out for is what will happen in January, February and March – that’s when we get the biggest storms, we get our largest waves and we have some very large tides.”

If these events align, their effects will compound, setting the stage for a tumultuous winter. Together, Warrick said, the systems will pack a far bigger punch. “When it comes to these storms and the tides,” he said, “we really are kind of rolling the dice.”

If you live directly along the west coast, this is going to be a very challenging time.
I hope that you have good insurance.
All of the very warm water that the Kelvin wave is bringing in will be ideal fuel for giant storms.
Right now, Hurricane Rachel is quietly churning in the Eastern Pacific.

It is currently a Category 1 storm, but by Saturday it is expected to have sustained winds of 104 miles per hour.
Will it make a turn toward California?

Meteorologists are not currently expecting that to happen, but we now live at a time of permanent uncertainty when it comes to the weather.

U.S. Treasury bonds are supposed to be among the most stable financial instruments in the entire global financial system. When they begin to trade like memecoins, that is a very clear indication that the next major financial crisis has arrived. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent insisted that he would be able to keep bond yields under control. Obviously that did not happen. Now we have a gigantic mess on our hands, and it is going to affect every man, woman and child in this country.

When bond yields soar, so do mortgage rates.
The national average for a 30 year fixed mortgage has risen to a whopping 7.54 percent.
Do you understand what this is going to do to the housing market?
Good luck if you want to buy a home.
Good luck if you want to sell a home.
And if you have an adjustable rate mortgage, you should be bracing for a lot of pain.
Credit card rates and auto loan rates are going to go up too.
The era of “easy borrow, easy spend” is coming to a crashing halt.
This will directly impact all of us.

Needless to say, it is going to be a lot more expensive for the federal government to borrow money too.
We are already spending way over a trillions dollars a year just on interest on the national debt, and so there is no way that we can afford for bond yields to spike.
But it is happening anyway.
Banks and financial institutions all over the nation are holding gobs and gobs of U.S. Treasuries.
They were supposed to be extremely safe investments.
But when bond yields soar to crazy levels, bond prices crash.
As a result, banks and financial institutions from coast to coast now have balance sheets that look like horror movies.
Is your bank at risk of failing?

You might want to look into that.
The stage is also being set for a derivatives meltdown of epic proportions.
If bond yields continue to skyrocket, we are going to see things happen in the derivatives marketplace that we have never seen before.
I am talking about the type of scenario where analysts are using words like “nuclear” and “apocalypse” to describe what is occurring.
Are you starting to understand what is at stake?
We desperately, desperately need bond yields to stop rising.
But that isn’t likely to happen, is it?
According to the Wall Street Journal, 10 year U.S. Treasures and 30 year U.S. Treasuries both rose to “their highest levels since 2002” yesterday…

Today is the final day of a quarter that’s been marked by a relentless selloff in government bonds.
The rout has driven U.S. Treasury yields—which move inversely to prices—to multidecade highs. Both the 10- and 30-year Treasury yields settled yesterday at their highest levels since 2002.

In 2002, the federal government was 6 trillion dollars in debt.
Today, the federal government is 40 trillion dollars in debt.
Big difference.
Today, things got even worse.
Just a little while ago, the yield on 10 year U.S. Treasuries hit 5.302 percent…

To most Americans, this means absolutely nothing, because they don’t understand all of the stuff that I just shared with you above.

Of course it isn’t just 10 year U.S. Treasuries that have begun to trade like memecoins.
The charts for 20 year U.S. Treasuries and 30 year U.S. Treasuries look like they were pulled out of a video game…


This is not supposed to happen.
Ever.
The really bad news is that bond yields have been spiking all over the world.
Today was no different…



Many people see green and they think that must be a good sign.
But as those bond yields go up, bond prices are collapsing.
In France, the yield on 10 year bonds just rose to the highest level since 2008…

France’s messy politics are spooking the bond markets. On September 29th yields on ten-year bonds rose to 4.8%, their highest level since 2008. The surge in borrowing costs has pushed the spread between French ten-year bonds and German Bunds up by 44 basis points in September, to 122 points—the highest level for 14 years. France now pays more to borrow than Greece and Italy, once the euro zone’s most worrisome members. It is increasingly looking like the currency area’s biggest problem, and things could get worse.

Italy is also becoming an absolutely enormous problem.
Simultaneously, Europe is on the verge of a major financial meltdown, Japan is on the verge of a major financial meltdown, and the U.S. is on the verge of a major financial meltdown.
Which area of the world will spiral out of control first?
As borrowing costs rise and the global energy crisis intensifies, we are going to want to watch for signs that economic activity is slowing down.
For example, a lot of trucking companies in the U.S. are starting to file for bankruptcy…

More than a dozen American trucking companies have filed for bankruptcy in the past month, according to an industry news report.
Some 16 firms, accounting for more than 250 jobs, have filed for Chapter 7 or Chapter 11 proceedings, FreightWaves reported earlier this month.
Diesel prices, the lifeblood of the trucking industry, hit a record average of $6.53 a gallon on September 22 amid the impact of President Donald Trump’s war with Iran. Diesel has increased $2.76 over the past year, according to motor club AAA.

The performance of the trucking industry often tells us where the economy as a whole is headed.
Without a doubt, the outlook for the months ahead is not promising at all.
We are facing a global energy crisis, a global fertilizer crisis, a global food crisis, a Super El Niño and World War III all at the same time.
Meanwhile, we continue to get hammered by one major natural disaster after another.
There are so many elements of “the perfect storm” that we are currently experiencing, and this storm is only going to get more intense as we move forward.

New SNAP rules take effect Oct. 1, raising fears of more benefit cuts

Lori Covelli, 53, an unemployed social worker in Kenosha, Wisconsin, who last year was collecting $760 per month in food stamps, recently lost all her benefits after failing to find a job and running afoul of the program's work requirements. She had hoped to regain that aid on her 54th birthday, when she would age out of those restrictions, but then learned that a new federal law had extended the program's work requirement to 64.

"They were saying, 'Just try to hold on until you turn 54,'" Covelli told CBS News in recounting discussions with employees at her state's office for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the formal name for the food-stamp program.

This summer—several months before Covelli turned 54—she received a letter from SNAP that dashed those hopes. It told her that under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (OBBBA), which President Trump signed into law on July 4, 2025, the work requirement had been extended for people up to age 64.

"That's a long way off. At this point, SNAP benefits are essentially over for me," she said.

Covelli said she's applying to about 10 jobs a week but has so far failed to find employment. In the meantime, she's not sure how she'll cope financially, especially given the rising cost of groceries, utilities and other daily essentials.

"It feels as though people are being punished" by the SNAP changes, she added.

In May, President Trump said that millions of people have been "lifted off" of SNAP due to a stronger economy. But anti-hunger experts and food-stamp recipients say that doesn't reflect what they are seeing, such as a job market where many are struggling to find work while coping with higher food costs.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told CBS News that Mr. Trump is "strengthening SNAP for the Americans who need it by ensuring these programs are sustainable for future generations."

"The Working Families Tax Cuts bill restores basic work requirements, prioritizes American citizens, and implements reasonable cost-sharing measures with states to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse," she said in an email.

October SNAP changes
About 5.2 million Americans like Covelli have lost SNAP benefits since the OBBBA was enacted, according to a recent analysis from the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC), an anti-hunger advocacy group.

SNAP enrollment now stands at its lowest level since 2019. Experts predict that more people will drop out of the program in the coming months as the 2025 tax and spending law imposes additional changes to SNAP.

SNAP's overhaul is creating new hurdles for applicants and heavier financial burdens for the states that administer the program, experts said. Starting Oct. 1, states will be required to pay 75% of the program's administrative costs, up from 50%.

Starting in October 2027, states with high SNAP payment error rates also will have to pay up to 15% of benefits, a cost the federal government has previously covered entirely. Republican lawmakers have said the error rates indicate fraud, although anti-hunger advocates say they occur for routine mistakes like misspellings or missing addresses.

Stricter work requirements for SNAP are adding more pressure, with experts noting that the new rules have contributed to the decline in enrollment. Under OBBBA, food-stamp recipients aged 18 to 64 are required to work or volunteer at least 80 hours per month.

Crystal FitzSimons, president of the Food Research & Action Center, said the Trump administration's changes to SNAP are "absolutely unprecedented."

FitzSimons said the more stringent work requirements and states scrambling to keep up with the funding changes enacted under OBBBA are creating confusion and application backlogs in many state SNAP agencies.

"There is a lot of chaos going on in SNAP, and it is harming the people the program was designed to serve," she said. "We are concerned that some states could drop out of the program because they're not able to cover the cost."

Alabama could be one of those states. Its SNAP director, Brandon Hardin, told the Alabama Reflector in July that the payment error rate issue could put the state on the hook for $174 million in additional costs. He added that one option would be for the state to end the food stamp program if it fails to lower its error rate and reduce the cost burden.

Biggest changes "in a generation"
Some states say they have been overwhelmed with managing the SNAP changes mandated by the OBBBA. Arizona residents' enrollment has dropped by 53% over the last year, the steepest of any state. In a June statement, its Department of Economic Security, which runs its SNAP program, said it had "been forced to rapidly overhaul our process to administer vital nutrition benefits" due to the OBBBA.

The law implemented "the most sweeping structural changes and strict administrative penalties seen in a generation," the agency added.

The Arizona agency told CBS News that it had implemented changes "to avoid disastrous financial penalties and preserve food assistance for as many Arizonans as possible."

Since those changes, the program has stabilized and added 57,000 more enrollees in August compared to April, the agency added.

"Although historical staffing shortages and legacy technology systems intensified the impact of the sweeping federal changes, we have reversed the trend in our caseload," Brett Bezio, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Economic Security, told CBS News.

"I have to prove that I'm sick"
Some food-stamp recipients told CBS News they've struggled to get responses from their states' SNAP departments as they navigate the new requirements.

Angie Aranda, 49, of Pueblo, Colorado, said she is seeking a waiver to the work requirements due to a chronic health condition, Crohn's disease. She's trying to find remote jobs so she can work at home and have easy access to a bathroom.

"I've probably put in about 30 applications," she said.

Aranda is seeking the medical waiver after the OBBBA changed its rules governing families with children. Before the law, people with children under 18 were exempt from the SNAP work requirement, but the law changed that to parents of kids under 14. Her children are 17 and 14, meaning she no longer qualifies for a work exemption.

Getting a clear answer from her state's SNAP agency about how to apply for a medical waiver has been challenging, and she worries that her family's roughly $900 in monthly food aid is at risk, Aranda said.

"I went to school to not be in this situation. I did volunteer work. I did lots of stuff until I got sick," she said. "And me being sick now, I have to prove that I'm sick over and over and over again."

$6.25 a day
The average SNAP benefit across the U.S. is about $6.25 per person per day, or roughly $190 per month, according to FRAC. That isn't enough to cover a typical meal in about 99% of U.S. counties, according to a 2025 analysis from the nonpartisan Urban Institute.

For many SNAP recipients, the OBBBA's changes come at a time when they are already grappling with higher costs for everything from groceries to gasoline.

"I'm spending exactly what I've gotten for food," said Lekishia Rivera, a SNAP recipient based in Fort Pierce, Florida. I try my hardest not to go over the budget, which is extremely hard when you have a child."

Rivera, a single mom, recently found out that her daughter, who has autism, was removed from SNAP after Rivera reapplied for Medicaid. Rivera now collects roughly $300 in monthly food stamps, down from $546 per month when her daughter was also getting benefits.

Grocery prices have jumped 32% since early 2020, according to Consumer Price Index data. Inflation has picked up in 2026 due to higher energy costs sparked by the Iran war, adding to the affordability crunch facing many households. The national average price of a gallon of gas is $4.46, according to AAA, up about 50% since before the war started.

"If it's more expensive to get groceries, how can removing SNAP help?" said Ailen Arreaza, executive director of ParentsTogether Action, a parent advocacy group. A recent survey of their members who receive food stamps found that two-thirds had seen their benefits cut in the last year. "They aren't filling prescriptions as much, they're having to cut back on meals and they themselves are eating less."

"Pandemic on steroids"
Cyndi Kirkhart, CEO of Facing Hunger Food Bank in Huntington, West Virginia, said her organization is seeing increased demand since the new law changed SNAP. The higher age limit for the work requirements is hitting her community especially hard, given that many in the 54- to 64-year-old age group are taking care of their grandchildren because their adult children are coping with opioid or other addiction issues, she said.

"Maybe they qualified for benefits before, but now, because of the age increase, they don't," Kirkhart said. "And we have very limited childcare, so they still have to provide care for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But then they've got to spend time outside of the home, in addition to try and get benefits."

"This is the pandemic on steroids with little food and little money," she added.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture halted its annual study on food insecurity in 2025, saying at the time that the report was "redundant, costly [and] politicized." FitzSimons of FRAC said her group is asking lawmakers to reinstate the study because of the need to understand the impact of SNAP cuts across the U.S.

A study released last year by Purdue University researchers found that food insecurity—meaning a lack of consistent access to nutritious food—rose in the U.S. last year between January and October. About 14% of households reported experiencing food insecurity during that period, up from 12.5% in 2024. The researchers cited inflation and SNAP cuts among the factors driving the increase.

"We have families begging for help for food, and it's so heartbreaking because I feel like I need to help, but I can't because I need help," said Aranda, who noted that her husband works for their county government but that their earnings are still low enough that they themselves qualify for assistance.

She added, "We're paycheck to paycheck and behind already. So you cut my benefits out with no extra income, and everything's still increasing. I have no idea what we're going to do."
