‘It’s horrific’: NC House candidate rips border failures after illegal immigrant charged in child’s death

North Carolina Republican congressional candidate Laurie Buckhout sounds off on the illegal immigration crisis hitting home after a young girl was killed in a car wreck caused by a previously-deported Mexican national.

A sprawling, 25-county congressional district more than 2,000 miles from the Mexican border was thrust into the national immigration spotlight this month after a 6-year-old girl was killed in a crash allegedly caused by a three-time deported illegal immigrant with a history of driving while intoxicated.

The economy usually dominates politics in North Carolina’s 1st congressional district, which consistently ranks among the nation’s poorest districts by poverty rate. But, that changed after six-year-old Calli Toler was pronounced dead after a wreck allegedly caused when Mexican national Jaime Santiago Corona ran a stop sign west of Vanceboro last week – just a mile from the district line.

The illegal immigration crisis has been "hitting home … in North Carolina, when you saw fentanyl dealers being caught, you saw terrorists being caught," Laurie Buckhout of Edenton, a retired Iraq War battalion commander and the Republican candidate seeking a rematch against incumbent Democratic Rep. Don Davis of Snow Hill, in what is now a slightly Republican-leaning; formerly Democrat-leaning swing district.

"It has continued because, under the Biden administration with Don Davis' oversight, you allowed so many illegals in the country [and] just a little bit ago, an illegal alien blew through a stop sign and killed a little girl," Buckhout said in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital.

Davis, who is also a retired military officer, said in a statement that he supported the Laken Riley Act, adding federal immigration laws must be enforced to ensure "safe communities" for Carolinians. He said Corona was driving on a revoked license when he crashed into the Tolers on Warren Jones Road near US-17.

Buckhout said Toler’s mother and sister survived after being treated at a Greenville hospital, adding that despite the Trump administration trying to crack down on illegal immigration, the repercussions of prior years’ leniency "continues to happen," she said.

Corona was deported in 2019, 2023 and 2024 and re-entered illegally a fourth time before the Vanceboro crash, according to DHS. He also has a criminal record that includes DUI charges, DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said.

Pitt County authorities, who have custody of Corona, indicated they plan to cooperate with ICE.

Buckhout said President Donald Trump’s "America First" agenda and DHS’ mass deportation actions have gone a long way to stem the tide of cases like the Tolers’, but that if elected she would push for higher pay for agents, and improved technology at the Mexican border like funding for sensors and other tools the feds can use to secure the homeland.

"We need to support them more… More technology, more access roads going down to the border so that they can access the border safely. We need to let them safely do their jobs with every technology available," Buckhout said.

"The safety of the American people depends upon it. You don't have sovereignty without a border. I mean, that's just the bottom line."

Buckhout also pointed to two other illegal immigrants’ cases in the district – the arrest of Jose Valdez-Masias on homicide charges near Warrenton and Josue Cano-Landero on child fondling and strongarm rape charges in the Inner Banks.

She also returned to the importance of reviving the economy in her area, noting that jobs are as important as national security for the people of NC-1.

"We need to protect our food sources, protect our farmers, protect our fishermen. And once again, build up the economy from the ground up because the Democrats have been ignoring it for so long," she said – as inland NC-1 is historically significant in the tobacco and peanut industries while the coastal areas are home to key fishing areas.

A spokesperson for Davis’ campaign countered that the Democrat’s record "speaks for itself" in his expected-to-be-tight race against Buckhout.

"Laurie Buckhout seems to be increasingly bothered by the resources Congressman Davis continues to deliver for ENC, and was most recently perturbed by the fact that he is fighting for a local hospital to be reopened in Martin County," the spokesperson said.

A 33-year-old illegal alien who has already been deported from the United States three times is behind bars after he ran a stop sign at high speed and killed 6-year-old Calli Toller in a violent crash.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers and court documents, Jaime Santiago Corona of Ayden was driving a 2023 Dodge Ram pickup truck south on Warren Jones Road on Friday, July 3, when he blew through the stop sign at the intersection with County Home Road.

His truck slammed into a westbound SUV driven by 35-year-old Kelli Toller, who had her two young children inside, WNCT reported.

Little Calli Toller was killed at the scene. Her mother and 4-year-old brother were both seriously injured and rushed to ECU Health Medical Center.

Santiago, who lives in Ayden, was arrested later that Friday afternoon by Highway Patrol troopers. He faces charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving while license revoked. Court records note he has no valid operator’s license.

Here’s the part that should make every American furious: Santiago is a known flight risk who has already been deported three separate times. Documents state it could not even be determined if he is a U.S. citizen. A magistrate ordered him held in the Pitt County Detention Center on a $100,000+ secured bond precisely because of his immigration history and flight risk.

This is the deadly result of years of catch-and-release, failed removals, and a system that treated deportation orders like suggestions.

The Gateway Pundit has documented this deadly pattern for years.

Just last month we reported on a previously deported illegal alien charged with triple murder in California after stabbing a young mother, her grandmother, and a two-week-old baby to death. That suspect had also been deported multiple times and was repeatedly released by authorities.

In 2024 we covered the case of an illegal alien deported four times who was charged with killing a mother and son in Colorado.

And in August 2024 we exposed how Democrat prosecutors in one jurisdiction charged a 16-times deported illegal alien with only misdemeanor traffic violations after he killed a 64-year-old American — far more lenient treatment than American citizens receive in similar cases.

Pitt County itself has seen this before. In February The Gateway Pundit reported on ICE lodging detainers against two criminal illegal aliens accused of a savage home invasion in the county that involved beating, sodomizing, and ripping the fingernails off their victim.

Now, once again, ICE is stepping in with a detainer after a repeat deportee killed a little American girl.

Another illegal driver has claimed a victim in a crash.

Pennsylvania State trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr., 44, was killed when a semitruck, allegedly driven by 33-year-old Michael Bon, who entered the country under the Biden administration and obtained a commercial driver’s license from Massachusetts

Trooper Pahira was conducting a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) inspection while standing outside his vehicle. The CMV, allegedly driven by Bon, first struck the side mirror on trooper Pahira’s car, which had its emergency lights on, then struck the rear of the CMV being inspected, before then striking trooper Pahira.

Following the crash, both CMVs caught fire.

Trooper Pahira was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to CBS 21, “A DHS spokesperson told CBS 21 that Michael Bon is a Haitian immigrant who has been in the U.S. illegally since June 2025.”

“Bon was admitted into the country at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as a parolee on July 2, 2024, DHS said.”

Although Bon filed an application for Temporary Protected Status with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, it was never granted, and parole was terminated.

Bon chose to remain in the country anyway.

Per a statement from state police:

Governor Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, Acting Commissioner, identified the fallen Trooper as Michael E. Pahira, Jr., a native of Schuylkill County.

Trooper Pahira enlisted in the PSP in January of 2007 and was assigned to Troop L, Frackville, as a Motor Carrier Inspector.

Trooper Pahira was conducting a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) inspection along I-81 Southbound near Mile Marker 119.3. Trooper Pahira was outside his vehicle, standing in the vicinity of the cab of the CMV, actively engaged in the inspection. The CMV was stationary on the right shoulder of the highway. Trooper Pahira’s marked patrol unit had its emergency lighting activated and was positioned directly behind the CMV.

A second CMV was also traveling southbound on I-81 and approached the location. The second CMV left the roadway and struck the patrol unit’s side view mirror. It then impacted the rear of the CMV, which was being inspected, pushing it further off the roadway. The second CMV then struck Trooper Pahira. Both CMVs caught on fire after impact.

Trooper Pahira was seriously injured and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr., 44, was inspecting a semitruck on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County at about 7 a.m. Wednesday when another truck went off the roadway and hit the first vehicle, creating a domino effect and striking the officer, state police said.

Pahira’s patrol car was parked behind the cab with its emergency lights on as he inspected the vehicle parked on the right shoulder in Cass Township when the deadly chain reaction occurred, according to officials.

The dangerous, and unfortunately often deadly, consequences of illegals with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), many of whom can not speak English or read road signs, have become sadly too frequent.

Safety experts estimate that as many as 130,000 illegal-alien truck drivers may be operating in the United States, with tens of thousands believed to have obtained licenses through illegitimate means.

The Gateway Pundit has reported on the deadly consequences of illegal alien truckers.

Bekzhan Beishekeev, a 30-year-old illegal alien from Kyrgyzstan who entered the US on Joe Biden’s open border invitation in December 2023, killed four Americans. The Amish victims were identified as 50-year-old Henry Eicher, 25-year-old Menno Eicher, 19-year-old Paul Eicher, and 23-year-old Simon Girod.

25-year-old Kamalpreet Singh killed a 29-year-old man on the morning of December 11 after he crushed the victim’s vehicle between two trucks while driving northbound on SR 167. Singh first illegally entered the US in Lukeville, Arizona, in December 2023 and was released by Biden’s border patrol.

On November 24, 2025, Rajinder Kumar, a criminal illegal alien from India, jackknifed his semi-truck and trailer, blocking both lanes of U.S. Highway 20. A Subaru Outback collided with the semi-truck, tragically killing both the driver, William Micah Carter, and passenger, Jennifer Lynn Lower.

56-year-old Goderdzi Gujabidze, an illegal alien from Georgia, caused a multicar crash that killed Indiana National Guardsman Terry Frye and injured three others.

On March 13, 2025, a 17-vehicle pileup occurred in a construction zone on Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas, killing five people, including an infant and a four-year-old child, and hospitalizing eleven others. The driver, Solomun Weldekeal Araya, a 37-year-old Ethiopian national on a work visa, was hauling freight for Amazon.

In May of 2025, in Thomasville, Alabama, a loaded semi-truck struck four vehicles stopped at a red light at highway speed, killing two people and injuring four others. The driver, Andrii Dmyterko, a 45-year-old Ukrainian national on a work visa, was on his third day on the job. Authorities reported that neither the driver nor his passenger spoke English and communicated only in Russian.

An illegal alien who is accused of killing four young Americans in a drunk driving crash in Canadian County, Oklahoma, is one of hundreds of thousands of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

In May, 26-year-old illegal alien Michael Rosario-Cruz was arrested by the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office and charged with second-degree murder, drunk driving causing bodily injury, possessing a firearm with an altered ID during the commission of a felony, carrying firearms while under the influence, transporting an open container, and driving the wrong way on a one-way road.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, on May 22, 20-year-old Kiercy Hickson, 19-year-old Quincy Jones, 18-year-old Haleigh Salazar, and 18-year-old Brad Palmer were in a vehicle together driving eastbound on Interstate 40 when Rosario-Cruz, driving the wrong way, hit them head-on.

Hickson, Jones, Salazar, and Palmer died at the scene of the crash while Rosario-Cruz was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

Rosario-Cruz, who has remained in jail since the deadly crash, has been placed on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer. Reports indicate that he received DACA status in 2015 under the Obama administration, shielding him from deportation.

This week marks 14 years since former President Obama created DACA through executive action, allowing hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens to be shielded from deportation solely because they were smuggled into the U.S. as children.

Federal records published in November 2019 by President Donald Trump’s administration reveal the scale to which illegal aliens with prior arrests were able to apply for and be granted DACA.

As of October 2019, the federal government had granted DACA to nearly 68,000 illegal aliens with prior arrest records, while fewer than 30,000 illegal aliens with prior arrests were denied DACA or had their DACA status terminated as a result.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested an illegal alien who was watching YouTube while driving when he killed a Minnesota trucker in March 2024.

ICE arrested Georgii Gabiev, an illegal alien from Russia, in Brooklyn on June 9 and plans to keep him in custody pending removal, the agency said in a June 15 press release. Gabiev entered the U.S. in 2022 and was reportedly released by former President Joe Biden’s administration, according to the New York Post.

Gabiev, who was 32 years old at the time of the March 2024 incident, was charged with criminal vehicular homicide and reckless driving as a result of the crash that killed Timmy J. Tarnowski, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. Tarnowski was driving east on the highway and pulling two trailers when Gabiev failed to stop his vehicle while driving north and collided with the truck.

A state trooper responded to the scene of the collision after 5 p.m. on March 5, 2024, and found the trailer lying on its side and engulfed in flames. Medics also responded to the scene, where they pronounced Tarnowski dead.

When the trooper approached Gabiev’s vehicle, he noticed an iPad still playing a YouTube video inside the vehicle. Gabiev said “he was listening to a program on an iPad that was teaching him how to speak English” and “he claimed to not have been looking at the iPad when he was driving,” according to the charges, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.

Gabiev was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to the criminal vehicular homicide charge, but a judge spared his sentence, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported in July 2024. Gabiev faced 69 days in jail, as a result of having credit for time already served, and three years of probation.

In addition, he was ordered to take a safe driving course and pay $5,437 to Tarnowski’s family. He spent a total of 120 days in jail, according to the same ICE press release.

Tarnowski’s wife, Tammy, reacted to ICE arresting Gabriev, saying, “Although Tim will never be brought back, Gabiev’s capture will bring the justice deserved.”

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin also reacted to the arrest.
“If it weren’t for the Biden administration’s open border policies, this tragedy would never have happened, and Tim would still be alive. This is our why. President Trump and I will never stop fighting for justice for Angel Families,” he said, according to the release.

An ICE spokesperson directed the Daily Caller to its press release regarding Gabiev’s arrest.

The Daily Caller also contacted DHS for comment.

Four illegal alien gang members with Tren de Aragua, three of whom were released into the United States by the Biden administration, have pleaded guilty to a double murder in the sanctuary jurisdiction of New York City, New York.

Last week, four illegal aliens from Venezuela — Keiber Jaen Martinez, Samuel Gonzalez Castro, Eferson Gabriel Morillo-Gomez, and Keineyer Ibarra-Mujica — entered guilty pleas related to a 2024 shooting in the Bronx that resulted in the murder of 44-year-old Claretha Daniels and 36-year-old Justin Lawless.

“I’m thankful that the victims and their families of these heinous acts finally get the justice they deserve,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement:

All four of these Tren de Aragua gang members entered our country under the Biden Administration. Tren de Aragua is one of the most vicious gangs on planet earth. They rape, maim, and murder for sport. Under President Trump’s leadership, we are targeting and removing gang members from our communities and ensuring those that committed crimes in our country face justice. [Emphasis added]

Indeed, Martinez crossed the United States-Mexico border into Texas in 2023. He was issued a final deportation order on Sept. 5, 2024, by a federal immigration judge.

Meanwhile, Castro, Morillo-Gomez, and Ibarra-Mujica all crossed the southern border and were released into the U.S. interior thanks to the Biden administration’s expansive catch and release policy.

Castro was issued a final deportation order in November 2024, while Ibarra-Mujica was issued a final deportation order in June 2024.

“Thanks to the hard work of our law enforcement partners and prosecutors, these four Tren de Aragua gang members will now face justice for their part in the ruthless and senseless murders of two Americans and the attempted murder of a third person in the Bronx two years ago,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement.

“As a former Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted violent crimes and gangs in the Bronx, this case hits home for me,” Blanche said. “Tren de Aragua is a terrorist organization with no place and no future in the United States, and this Department of Justice will not stop until we have rooted out, dismantled and destroyed them.”

A few days after the murder, it was confirmed that the masked gunman who killed Gorman is a 25-year-old illegal alien from Venezuela who entered the US under the Biden Regime.

Police took Jose Medina-Medina into custody, facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and weapons charges.

Now, Medina is facing new charges after being found with a weapon in jail.

According to CBS News, Sheriff Tom Dart said staff found a six-inch shank in his possession around 8 a.m. Thursday.

Per CBS:

After staff at the Cook County Jail were tipped off about the shank, they searched him and found a sharpened piece of metal with a handle made of medical tape in his pants pocket, Dart said.

Medina has been in custody since March 23 as he awaits trial for Gorman’s death.

Friday, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a felony charge of possession of contraband in a penal institution Friday.

Earlier this month, President Trump invited Sheridan’s family to speak at a rally in Suffern, New York.

Gorman’s mother and father shared the stage with her sister and another young woman, both of whom were holding pictures of Sheridan. Both parents questioned how local leaders could let this happen to their young daughter and why the fight to protect American citizens “belongs to only one party.”

“She was gunned down by an illegal alien monster in cold blood,” Trump told the crowd at Rockland Community College.

“This savage animal, who stole Sheridan’s life, entered illegally from Venezuela and was released into our country by Crooked Joe Biden, and that whole Biden administration of thieves and criminals. He was then arrested and released again by Dumocrat Governor JP Pritzker, a terrible governor, has no idea what’s going on in the sanctuary city of Chicago. Sanctuary cities protect criminals. They’re a sanctuary for criminals, not for people like you, like us.”

Breaking into tears, Jessica Gorman, the mother of the slain teen, thanked President Trump and lawmakers for fighting to protect American citizens from the illegal alien thugs terrorizing American communities, then eviscerated the leadership in Chicago for giving refuge to Sheridan’s murderer.

“Mother’s Day was just two weeks ago. For most mothers, it meant flowers and cards and phone calls, or children coming home. For me, it was heartache and tears because on March 19, my beautiful daughter, Sheridan Grace Gorman, was murdered in cold blood,” Jessica told the crowd, fighting through tears.

“No mother should ever have to wonder if her child called out for her in her final moments. No mother should ever have to imagine her baby lying alone and bleeding on the cold pavement, and no family should ever have to bury a child because public officials failed to put innocent American lives first,” she said.

On May 29, 2026, in Modesto, California, Joaquin Escoto, 28, a Mexican national and illegal immigrant, was arrested and charged with three counts of murder.

He allegedly stabbed to death Fabiola Gonzalez, 23, a devoted mother, her own mother, and loving grandmother Silvia Nuñez, 54, and Fabiola’s 2-week-old infant son, Mateo Gonzalez.

A surviving child of approximately 4 years old was found in the home and taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

According to The California Post, California’s controversial state sanctuary law obstructed federal authorities who sought to deport him.

The New York Post reports:

On the day of Escoto’s DUI arrest in June, which occurred in San Joaquin County, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials requested to be notified of the Modesto resident’s release from jail so they could deport him again, according to the official.

But San Joaquin law enforcement officials hogtied by California’s contested sanctuary law failed to notify the feds, and Escoto was set free, the official said.

“Safe to say, California law prohibited the jail from complying,” said the official, who shared police documents that substantiated his claims with The Post.

Now, less than one year after that request from ICE agents was ignored, Escoto is being held without bail on three counts of murder in the grisly knife slaying in Modesto of an infant and two women, including one with whom he allegedly had a child, according to police.

The illegal alien accused of murdering 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman in March of this year has been hit with additional charges after jail staff found him in possession of a shank in Cook County, Illinois.

As Breitbart News has chronicled, 25-year-old illegal alien Jose Medina-Medina of Venezuela was arrested by the Chicago Police Department and charged with murdering Sheridan Gorman in a random attack on a pier at Tobey Prinz Beach on March 19.

Prosecutors say Sheridan was with a group of friends on the pier when she noticed Medina-Medina hiding with a mask on his face and a gun. When Sheridan and others in the group started running for safety, Medina-Medina allegedly fired the gun, shooting and killing the young woman, who was in her freshman year of college at Loyola University.

This week, while in Cook County Jail, Medina-Medina was caught with a 6-inch shank, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The charges allege that when Medina-Medina was recently searched in jail, staff found a sharpened piece of metal in his pocket with a handle that had been fastened to it with tape.

The news comes as Sheridan’s parents, Thomas and Jessica Gorman, recently spoke during a rally in Rockland County, New York, hosted by President Donald Trump.

Jessica Gorman said her daughter planned to see the Northern Lights alongside her friends the night she was murdered.

“She never got to see those lights. Instead, her life was stolen by a man who should have never been in this country, a man who never should have been set free in that community,” Jessica Gorman said.

“And every step the system had a chance to stop him and at every step, the system failed. And my daughter paid for those failures with her life.”

“No family should ever have to bury their child because public officials failed to put innocent American lives first,” Jessica Gorman continued.



“We did not just lose Sheridan, we lost our peace, we lost our future, we lost the life that we knew,” Thomas Gorman said. “And no family should have to become experts in immigration failures, release policies, warrants, sanctuary laws, enforcement breakdowns because their daughter was killed by someone who should not have been here and should not be free.”

Last month, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee unveiled bombshell internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents showing that agency officials released Medina-Medina into the United States interior in May 2023, despite knowing he did not have a valid asylum claim.

Under the direction of former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the documents reveal, Medina-Medina was released into the United States interior even though he had made no valid asylum claim, had no form of identification, provided no United States contact or address, and made clear he did not fear being returned to his native Venezuela.

Just a month after Medina-Medina’s release into the United States, in June 2023, he was arrested in Chicago, Illinois, for shoplifting. Thanks to the city and state’s sanctuary policies, Medina-Medina was not turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents following that arrest — a move that would have saved Sheridan’s life.

A migrant is accused of killing 63-year-old Randy Sizemore, a husband, father, and grandfather of seven grandchildren, in a hit-and-run crash in Rensselaer, Indiana, this week.

Esly Fuentes Sanabria, a 21-year-old migrant whose exact immigration status is still not known, was arrested by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and charged with felony leaving the scene of a fatal accident, felony criminal recklessness resulting in death, and felony operating a motor vehicle without a license resulting in death.

According to police, on May 23, Sanabria was driving a vehicle when he ran a stop sign and hit Randy Sizemore, who was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle at the time. Sizemore was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, police say Sanabria, along with the passenger of his vehicle, tried to flee the scene on foot but was quickly located and taken into police custody.

Sizemore, a native of Rensselaer, married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne, in 1982, and together, the two had two children and seven grandchildren.

“Randy spent much of his free time enjoying his family, which he loved dearly,” his obituary reads.

“When he wasn’t busy spoiling his grandkids, you could probably find Randy on the golf course, working in his garden, or riding his beloved Harley.”

Sanabria remains in police custody on a $50,000 cash bond. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) interviewed Sanabria the day after the fatal crash and lodged a detainer against him.

An illegal alien is accused of killing 20-year-old Kiercy Hickson, 19-year-old Quincy Jones, 18-year-old Haleigh Salazar, and 18-year-old Brad Palmer in a drunk driving crash in Canadian County, Oklahoma.

Michael Rosario-Cruz, a 26-year-old illegal alien, was arrested by the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office and charged with second-degree murder, drunk driving causing bodily injury, possessing a firearm with an altered ID during the commission of a felony, carrying firearms while under the influence, transporting an open container, and driving the wrong way on a one-way road.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, on May 22, Hickson, Jones, Salazar, and Palmer were in a vehicle together driving eastbound on Interstate 40 when Rosario-Cruz, driving the wrong way, hit them head-on.

Hickson, Jones, Salazar, and Palmer died at the scene of the crash while Rosario-Cruz was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

The mother of Stephanie Minter, the 41-year-old mother who was brutally stabbed to death at a bus stop allegedly by an illegal alien with more than 30 prior arrests, said her daughter’s murder was caused by a “preventable failure” by Fairfax County, Virginia, Commonwealth’s Attorney, Steve Descano.

Angel Mom Cheryl Minter testified on Thursday before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, regarding her daughter Stephanie’s murder earlier this year.

“We would share a cup of coffee during early mornings. We butted heads like every other mother-daughter, but wanted to actively take steps together to make our relationship better,” Minter told the committee. “We would share stories, memories, laughter, thoughts of the future, and more. This is something I will never get to experience again because of the failures of our justice system.”

“Stephanie was my daughter, my heart. She was a loving mother, a daughter, sister, an auntie, a friend, and a mentor,” she continued. “She believed in God. She cared for people. She showed up for others, even when she was tired. Stephanie was my memory, since mine isn’t all that great anymore. She always knew the right bible verse for any situation. Always smiling, always joyful, and always loved life even through the bad times.”

As Breitbart News reported, 32-year-old illegal alien Abdul Jalloh of Sierra Leone was arrested by the Fairfax County Police Department and charged with stabbing Stephanie Minter, a mother, to death at a Fredericksburg, Virginia, bus stop in a random attack.

Jalloh had more than 30 prior arrests before Minter’s murder, but Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Steve Descano, repeatedly dropped charges against him.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) has suggested that she will not ensure that Jalloh remains locked up and turned over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if he is set to be released at any time.

Minter said her daughter should never have been murdered because “the man who took my daughter’s life should not have been free to walk the streets.”

“He had been picked up many times. He was known. There were warnings. There were emails sent saying he was a danger. And still, he was released. I am not here for politics. I am here for accountability. I am here because a system failed my daughter,” Minter said:

When policies protect people who are a known threat, innocent lives are put at risk. When warnings are ignored, families like mine pay the price. This is not just about my Stephanie.

This is about every mother. Every parent. Every child. Every person who waits at a bus stop, walks home, or goes to work, trusting they will be safe. We cannot ignore this. We cannot look away.

Compassion should never come at the cost of public safety. Care for one group should not mean danger for another. [Emphasis added]

During Descano’s testimony, he turned to Minter and apologized. Descano’s office, before Jalloh was charged with murdering Stephanie, repeatedly had run-ins with the illegal alien but did not ever seriously charge him with crimes claiming they were unable to secure witnesses in the cases.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) absolutely demolished Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano on Thursday.

Just one week after the Trump Justice Department announced a civil rights investigation into Descano’s office for alleged bias favoring illegal alien criminals over American citizens, the far-left prosecutor was hauled before Congress – and he melted down when confronted with his own words and deadly policies.

As The Gateway Pundit reported earlier today, Descano was set to testify in the hearing titled “Fairfax County, Virginia: The Dangerous Consequences of Sanctuary Policies.”

What unfolded was pure gold: Jordan caught Descano red-handed trying to memory-hole his own campaign promise to let immigration status influence charging and plea decisions.

This comes after the murder of Stephanie Minter, 41, who was stabbed to death in February by an illegal alien from Sierra Leone with over thirty arrests.

Police say Abdul Jalloh, 32, rode on the same bus as Stephanie Minter and was seen getting off the bus with her. Soon afterward police were called to the scene where Minter was found with multiple stab wounds to her upper body.

Under the Soros-backed prosecutors, crimes like this by illegal aliens frequently occur in Fairfax County.

Jordan went straight for the jugular, demanding to know why Descano suddenly changed his campaign website last month, conveniently right after the committee sent him a letter demanding he testify.

Descano claimed that it was too “obtuse” to understand the difference between what he told voters to get elected and what he actually does in office.

Jim Jordan:
“Mr. Descano, why did you change your website?”

Steve Descano:
“Sir, first of all, let me address what you had said.”

Jim Jordan:
“No, no, no. You answered the questions we asked. You answered the questions we asked. I asked a simple question: Why did you change your website last month?”

Steve Descano:
“Well, sir, your statements about we’re not—don’t want to prosecute guys is absolutely false, and my policies are right in this hearing.”

Jim Jordan:
“Are you saying what the sheriff wrote me is wrong?”

Steve Descano:
“No. What I’m saying is that the way my policies have been presented in this hearing is outrageous.”

Jim Jordan:
“December 16th. She said the Commonwealth’s Attorney—that’s you—chose not to prosecute Mr. Morales-Ortiz on December 16th, and they had to release him. They had to do their job because you wouldn’t prosecute. What happened on December 17th, Mr. Descano?”

Steve Descano:
“Let’s talk about December 16th.”

Jim Jordan:
“No, no, that’s the question. What happened on December 17th? This same guy murdered somebody. This guy murdered somebody, and I’m asking you: Why did you change your website?”

Steve Descano:
“Well, do you not want me to talk to you about the actual case?”

“I want you to answer the first question I said: Why did you change your website?”

“Well, sir, because the website is not my policy. My policy is—you are referring to a campaign statement.”

“I think the voters might be interested in that. Was this your campaign website where you said, ‘Our office will take immigration consequences into account when making charging and plea decisions’? Immigration consequences were certainly part of the game here, part of the issue here with Mr. Morales-Ortiz.”

“No, they weren’t.”

Jim Jordan:
“You decided not to prosecute.”

“Absolutely were not. You are assuming something that is not—in fact, untrue—because you are misrepresenting my policies. My policies do not say that we do not prosecute people for criminal immigration.”

Jim Jordan:
“Well, if you’re proud of your policies, why did you change your website?”

Steve Descano:
“Because that’s not my policy. As I told you, sir, that is a campaign statement that I made before I was Commonwealth’s Attorney.”

“Mr. Descano, it had been up for six years. A week after we sent you a letter saying we want you to come testify, shazam, you change it. Is that coincidental?”

“This is almost laughable. This is your policy. You said it right here. You told the voters, ‘If you elect me, I will take into account immigration consequences when making charging and plea decisions.’”

Steve Descano:
“This is my policy, not what you have in your hand.”

Jim Jordan:
“Oh, okay. So what you said to the voters is not real, doesn’t count?”

Steve Descano:
“No, sir.”

“What I’m saying is that, as an officeholder, my office is run by my policy.”

Jim Jordan:
“Your sheriff said you wouldn’t prosecute. This guy gets released, kills someone the next day. We start asking about it. You change your website and take down the statements that say you’re going to take into account immigration consequences when you decide who you are going to charge.”

Steve Descano:

Angel Parents Thomas and Jessica Gorman say the illegal alien accused of murdering their 18-year-old daughter Sheridan is “fully capable” of standing trial and said that in court, the suspect was not even bothering to use his Spanish translator.

As Breitbart News has chronicled, 25-year-old illegal alien Jose Medina-Medina of Venezuela was arrested by the Chicago Police Department and charged with murdering Sheridan Gorman in a random attack on a pier at Tobey Prinz Beach on March 19.

Prosecutors say Sheridan was with a group of friends on the pier when she noticed Medina-Medina hiding with a mask on his face and a gun. When Sheridan and others in the group started running for safety, Medina-Medina allegedly fired the gun, shooting and killing the young woman, who was in her freshman year of college at Loyola University.

Medina-Medina’s attorney has claimed in court filings that the illegal alien is “severely brain damaged and disabled,” suggesting he may not be able to stand trial.

Sheridan’s parents told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum that the claims are nonsense.

“I saw him stand in the courtroom,” Thomas told MacCallum. “… someone who can plan this, to gain access to an illegal firearm, to have the wherewithal to wear a mask at the end of a pier, hiding, waiting for someone to come, that person planned that out, they’re fully capable of standing trial.”



Likewise, Jessica said she noticed in a recent court hearing where Medina-Medina was present that the illegal alien was not bothering to use his court-appointed Spanish translator, something she says would suggest that he is fully aware of what is going on.

“One thing I thought that was actually notable was that they had explained to us that he does not understand any English and he has the mentality of a small child,” Jessica told MacCallum:

Well first of all a small child does not buy an illegal gun, a small child does not stand at the end of a pier waiting to kill someone. And also, when he was speaking with the judge, there was a translator, he was not even waiting for the translator to speak before he was answering the judge who was addressing him. It just leads me to believe that it’s not as they say. He understood that judge, he understood him before the translator ever started speaking. [Emphasis added]

Madeline Gorman, Sheridan’s older sister, told MacCallum that the two were best friends and had planned to spend the summer together in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Sheridan and I were 11 months apart. I don’t remember a time in my life without her, ever … She was always right behind me,” Madeline said. “We spent every second together with sports. We were raised in the same house. Same school, just, she was always there for me, she was always the confidence I needed.”

“And you never imagine losing your sister so young, you’re supposed to go through life together. She was supposed to be my maid of honor one day, right beside me. I’m supposed to be the aunt of her children,” she continued. “I think people really need to understand, this is a reality. It’s something you never ever expect to happen to you, to happen to your sibling, your best friend … It’s real, it can happen.”

Last month, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee unveiled bombshell internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents showing that agency officials released Medina-Medina into the United States interior in May 2023, despite knowing he did not have a valid asylum claim.

Under the direction of former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the documents reveal, Medina-Medina was released into the United States interior even though he had made no valid asylum claim, had no form of identification, provided no United States contact or address, and made clear he did not fear being returned to his native Venezuela.

Just a month after Medina-Medina’s release into the United States, in June 2023, he was arrested in Chicago, Illinois, for shoplifting. Thanks to the city and state’s sanctuary policies, Medina-Medina was not turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents following that arrest — a move that would have saved Sheridan’s life.

An illegal migrant accused of killing a father and injuring an elderly woman during a police chase in Orange County appeared stricken while trying to hide his face in court on Thursday.

Colombian national Darwin Felipe Bahamon Martinez, 21, who had been set free by the Biden administration, allegedly killed a 59-year-old man and injured an 83-year-old woman during a January 21 police pursuit.

During a preliminary hearing in Orange County Superior Court, Martinez flashed a look of fear as a sheriff’s deputy led him into a cage in the courtroom and locked him inside.

Martinez hid himself behind the cage barrier, out of sight of attorneys, the judge and court audience. At one point during the three-minute hearing, he covered his face with a brown envelope.

Martinez appeared nervous but was able to answer as Judge Fernando Valle began questioning him about his upcoming court dates.

Instead, Martinez allegedly took off. After a three-minute chase, he plowed into at least two additional cars — killing beloved father Jose Antonio Ramos Hernandez and injuring the 83-year-old woman, according to police.

Martinez is currently being held on $2 million bail after pleading not guilty to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, evading a police officer causing death and reckless driving.

He is next due in court on July 7.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Martinez illegally entered the country near Chula Vista in August 2023.

ICE officials say Martinez was nabbed by authorities after illegally crossing the California-Mexico border, but was allowed back on the streets during Biden’s presidency.

“He was released into the U.S. under the Biden administration’s so-called ‘catch-and-release’ policies, but if that hadn’t happened, the innocent 59-year-old driver he allegedly killed may still be alive today,” ICE officials said in a statement.

ICE lodged an immigration detainer against him on Jan. 22, though California’s sanctuary state laws do not compel local authorities to transfer illegal migrants charged with crimes into federal custody.

OGDEN — An Ogden woman arrested earlier this month on suspicion of drug distribution has now been linked to the fatal shooting of another woman a week earlier.

Ana María Zaragoza, 37, was charged on Friday in 2nd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony, plus two counts of obstruction of justice and being a restricted person in possession of a weapon, second-degree felonies.

On April 2, Nakeena Youngman, 40, of Salt Lake City, was found lying in the road near 450 E. 800 North in Ogden.

"Nakeena had sustained a gunshot wound to her upper chest and later died from that injury," according to charging documents.

Investigators learned that Youngman had been at an apartment earlier in the evening with Zaragoza.
"Nakeena and Ana argued just before both of them left the apartment, and a gunshot was heard. The witnesses who were with both Naleena and Ana that night confirm that Ana drives a silver Nissan Altima and parks in a particular spot when she visits the apartment," the charges state.

Police began looking for Zaragoza to question her. Detectives would later learn, however, that after the shooting, she got rid of her phone and the gun used to kill Youngman and then traveled to Los Angeles, where she purchased a plane ticket to Mexico, court documents state. But "ultimately (she) did not make that flight as she decided to return to Utah," and was able to obtain a second gun and another phone.

Then on April 13, Zaragoza was arrested by the Utah Highway Patrol, booked into the Davis County Jail and was charged in 2nd District Court with three counts of drug distribution with intent to distribute, a second-degree felony, and seven other crimes.

In that case, a trooper spotted Zaragoza going 101 mph on I-15 and pulled her over. A preliminary test showed her blood-alcohol level at the time was 0.17%, according to charging documents. Bindles of meth, cocaine and fentanyl were also found in her vehicle, the charges state, as well as a gun.

At the time of her arrest in Davis County, investigators noted that Zaragoza was not a legal U.S. citizen and had "booked a flight to Guadalajara, Mexico, the week before this incident, but she missed the flight for some reason."

After her Davis County arrest, Ogden detectives determined the vehicle Zaragoza was driving at that time was similar to the one they were looking for in connection with the homicide investigation.

"Ana was interviewed by (Ogden police), where she admitted to shooting Nakeena after Nakeena made threats toward her. Ana admitted to discarding the pistol that she used to shoot Nakeena, then discarding her cellphone. Ana stated that she knew her phone could be tracked, and this is why she discarded it," the charging documents allege.

An arrest warrant filed in court further explains that after Zaragoza and Youngman got into an argument at the Ogden apartment and just as they were leaving, Zaragoza, "by her own admission to police, acknowledged she went to her car to get a gun when she could have left safely. (Zaragoza) then approached (Youngman) and fired a single 9mm round into (her) chest, resulting in her death," the charges state.

Detectives say they were also able to review text messages Zaragoza allegedly made several days after the shooting, "in which she talks about wanting to kill people and then herself and specifically references that if she is pulled over by police, she would shoot the officers and then herself," according to the charges.

"The trooper who stopped her on the Davis County charge described how she was looking around in the vehicle during his initial interaction with her, but described her having difficulty because of her level of intoxication — which further substantiates had she not been drunk and unable to find her gun, she could have engaged in a shootout with police as she had described. There are also messages referencing wanting to kill other people," the charges say.

Thirteen years in prison hardly seems adequate punishment for causing the drunk-driving death of 51-year-old Pamila Yoder (pictured below) in Sarasota, Florida, last November.

Not only did the crash cause a fatality, it critically injured Susan Mullinnix who was driving a pickup truck in the Sarasota smash-up that involved four vehicles.

The drunk-driving illegal alien, Daniel Garcia, was also listed in critical condition immediately after the crash, but he managed to escape the hospital by walking out the front door the next morning in his gown. He remained at large for several months until he was found thanks to persistent police work on the part of Sarasota County detective Brian Barrett.

Interestingly, Garcia did not flee to Mexico (known to be a friendly hide-out for criminals) but went to Gainesville, which he must have thought was far enough.

SARASOTA COUNTY – Pamila Yoder’s three children thought this day might never come — when the man accused of driving drunk and killing their 51-year-old mother faced a judge.

They drove to the Sarasota County Courthouse this morning from Jacksonville and Miami to watch first-hand as Daniel Garcia, who pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter, received a 13-year prison sentence.

Garcia, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, had been on the lam for several months after the Nov. 7, 2010 crash in Sarasota that killed Yoder. The family had a hard time healing, knowing the man responsible for Yoder’s death was free.

But Garcia, 26, finally was arrested while hiding out in Gainesville, thanks to the dogged efforts of one of the region’s most aggressive fugitive hunters, Sarasota County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Barrett.
In court this morning, Yoder’s three children went to the podium together for emotional support, clutching tissues and touching each other on the shoulder. They spoke to Garcia directly.

“I just wanted you to know my face,” Yoder’s daughter, Tavy Chen, formerly Tavy Wells, said to Garcia. “I will never forget what you did. I hope you never forget either.”

Pamila Yoder died at the scene of the crash at University Parkway and U.S. 301; Garcia had been airlifted with grave injuries from the crash and taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
The next morning, before he was charged, Bayfront Medical security footage showed him walking out the front door, still in a hospital gown, the I-V still hanging from his arm.

The FHP looked for Garcia, but gave up. Deputy Barrett spent months observing the area’s labor camps, Latin dance clubs and bars, finally getting a break and catching Garcia at a Gainesville apartment complex.

Yoder’s son, Jesse Yoder, said his mother above all valued truth. “I hope that what you are doing here today is because you genuinely want to make some sort of amends,” he said to Garcia. “I know nothing can undo what happened, but I just want you to understand what you’ve done to our family.”

FORREST COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - An illegal immigrant from El Salvador who is accused of shooting and killing a woman Wednesday in Hattiesburg was denied bond Friday afternoon.

Julio Cesar Pineda, 42, was remanded into custody of the Forrest County Detention Center during a first appearance hearing before Forrest County Justice Court Judge Wes Curry.

12th Circuit District Attorney Lin Carter confirmed Friday afternoon that Pineda had entered the country illegally.

Hattiesburg Police took Pineda into custody early Wednesday morning as a person of interest after Josie Windham, 29, was discovered shot and lying on a sidewalk in the 2300 block of West Seventh Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pineda was charged with first-degree murder later that day.

Carter said the Hattiesburg Police Department has let United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement put a “hold” on Pineda. With the hold, Pineda was ineligible for bond.

Carter said his office would prosecute Pineda for first-degree murder “first” before any federal charges that may be involved.

A previously-deported illegal alien from Guatemala is facing significant charges after killing an American motorist in a drunk-driving crash in Virginia, authorities say.

The tragedy unfolded on Aug. 23 in Virginia Beach, but key details about the suspect just came to light this week.

Virginia Beach Police Department officers arrived at the scene of a two-vehicle collision just after 2 a.m. that morning.

One driver, identified as 37-year-old Norfolk resident Steven White II, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle sustained serious injuries but survived.

Investigators determined that a vehicle driven by Erwin Marroquin-Herrera, 26, had been traveling in the wrong direction when White’s vehicle was struck head-on.

Marroquin-Herrera was charged with manslaughter, DUI, and two counts of possession of fictitious identification.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed with Border Hawk that Marroquin-Herrera is an illegal alien who has been deported two times.

“Virginia can never become a sanctuary state. According to police, an illegal immigrant driving drunk and the wrong way, with 2 fake IDs, killed Steven White. Mr. White’s killer had been previously deported multiple times,” Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin stated this week.

Inmate information indicates Marroquin-Herrera is being held without bond.

Donald Weynandt was killed on Feb. 1

SAN ANTONIO – It’s been nearly a month, but Donald Weynandt’s death is still a nightmare for his daughter, Katrina Mercado.

“It’s hard to believe,” Mercado said. “It’s hard to process.”

KSAT first reported this story on Feb. 1. Weynandt died from a sharp force injury to the neck, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was ruled a homicide.

“I think the questions will forever be developing over time processing what happened,” Mercado said.

Weynandt was killed at his home on Felisa Street. San Antonio police said Alberto Rafael Ferrer Cabrera, 26, was arrested in connection with the case.

SAPD said Ferrer Cabrera claimed to have murdered Weynandt, who was his significant other. At the scene, Ferrer Cabrera was formerly detained for questioning and then was later arrested for murder, police said.

As of Tuesday, online records show Ferrer Cabrera was still in jail. He is accused of murder and illegal entry from a foreign nation, according to court records.

The timeline of what happened still comes as a shock to Mercado.

“There was no indication that anything was wrong,” Mercado said.

“Did you know Alberto before this all happened?” KSAT reporter Avery Everett asked.

“I did not,” Mercado said. “I never spoke to this individual. I personally did not trust the situation.”

As the court process only just begins to play out, Mercado said she still has so many questions. But her focus is on accountability and getting her father justice.

“How do you want your dad to be remembered?” Everett asked.

“As a loving father,” Mercado said.

A man was linked to two separate murders in Miami and Miami Beach, including the killing of a man he was in an intimate relationship with, authorities said.

A man was linked to two separate murders in Miami and Miami Beach, including the killing of a man he was in an intimate relationship with, authorities said Thursday.

Zsolt Zsolyomi, 25, a Hungarian national, is charged with second-degree murder in both cases, according to jail records. Both victims were elderly, disabled men, according to Miami police.

On Jan. 19, a man was found dead in the driver's seat of a vehicle near Northwest 14th Avenue and Second Street in Little Havana, according to an arrest warrant. The victim, identified as 71-year-old Rodolfo Fernandez de Velasco, was found with both front seatbelts around his neck.

The victim had sustained trauma, and police only concluded his manner of death as a homicide.

According to the warrant, surveillance cameras nearby captured the vehicle crashing into a fence and a man jumping out of the vehicle and fleeing the area.

Detectives later matched fingerprints from the vehicle to Zsolyomi.

Zsolyomi is also accused of a murder back in November when a man was found dead in his Miami Beach apartment after family members repeatedly tried to reach him, the warrant said.

The victim, a 66-year-old man, was discovered unresponsive with his head and upper body partially submerged in the bathtub with water, according to the warrant. The medical examiner later ruled he died by strangulation.

Detectives discovered Zsolyomi went by the fictitious name "Thomas" and that he and the victim were in an intimate relationship. They found text conversations, pictures of the two together, and doorbell camera footage of the pair entering and leaving the Miami Beach apartment.

Text conversations also revealed the victim accusing Zsolyomi of beating him and stealing from him, the warrant said. He also sent a photo of his injured eye. Zsolyomi first denied beating him, but then responded with, "Sometimes I don't know what I do when I'm drunk" and apologized several times.

The victim threatened to call the police on Zsolyomi if Zsolyomi didn't return his stolen property, and even revealed that he knew Zsolyomi's real name, date of birth and jail number.

Police say security cameras caught the suspect entering and leaving the apartment the night before Villaquiran’s body was found inside.

According to detectives, Zsolyomi is a Hungarian national currently listed as an illegal overstay by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He wore an ankle monitor after he was released from custody from a robbery arrest in Miami Beach in July of 2024.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have been victimized by Zsolyomi or who has information related to similar cases to contact the Miami Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 305-603-6350.

A grieving Texas mother broke down in tears on Fox News with a heartwrenching plea for justice for her late son allegedly gunned down by an illegal immigrant from Honduras in April.

"How dare you," Victoria Garcia said Tuesday morning on "Fox & Friends First."

"You're here illegally, but you have a firearm. I get it, on the street, you're able to buy anything and everything, but you came over to steal and destroy, and that's what you did. Because you destroyed my family. You took away my son."

Ricardo Vega, a father of two, was allegedly murdered by 32-year-old illegal immigrant suspect Osman Solorzano Sanchez during a road rage incident in North Houston earlier this year.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Vega following Sanchez's truck shortly before he was shot dead. Vega's 911 call indicated he was chasing the suspect's truck after a hit-and-run incident.Sanchez was additionally accused of tampering with the crime scene by trying to make his truck unrecognizable to police.

Garcia expressed anger after shocking records obtained by Fox News revealed one in 10 inmates in Texas' Harris County Jail are wanted by ICE, including multiple for offenses like homicide and sexual assault.

The Texan said as a Mexican-American, she understands the plight of those fleeing their homes for a better life in the U.S., but added that those crossing into the country need to be vetted for safety purposes.

"I've been a witness at the border where you see these migrants walking in groups – old people, young people, children in strollers. I get it, you're fleeing from a country that's full of poverty, full of violence, full of gangs, [with a] poor health care system. You know what? We have those issues here in Texas. We have those issues here in the United States, so what gives you the right to come and burden us more?" she asked.

"Not everybody that comes here is a bad person. But we do need to know who you are and what are your intentions. How do you just go? And because you've made this long journey, and you're there at the border and whatever questions they ask you and boom, you're given that pass."

Garcia said she never wanted to be angry or bitter. Instead, she only wants justice for Ricardo.

As she spoke of her late son, her words were punctuated by sobs.

"His smile now is what keeps his mom going," she said. "And I will fight. He's not here to fight this fight, but I will be Ricardo's voice to the very end. I will do what it takes for my son to receive justice."

WOODBURN, Ore. -- Records indicate that a man charged with killing a Woodburn toddler in a hit-and-run on Monday had a federal immigration hold and agents suspect he is in the country illegally.

Victor Garcia-Hernandez, 23, was arrested Monday night for killing 2-year-old Gabriel Rosas-Vargas. An eyewitness who saw the hit-and-run told KGW Garcia-Hernandez hit the boy, got out of the car, looked at him, made a phone call and then left the scene.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, has fueled the speculation that Garcia-Hernadez is in the country illegally by admitting that he should have been expelled during a prior arrest on DUI charges.

According to ICE, Marion County Sheriff's deputies faxed information to customs officials back in April 2008, notifying them that a possible illegal alien was in custody on DUI charges.

The fax was reportedly sent at 2 a.m., though, and federal agents weren't in the office overnight. By morning, Garcia-Hernandez was released from jail.

Less than a year later, Garcia-Hernandez is back in jail, this time on charges that he killed the young boy. Deputies said additional charges were likely.

The child ran into a Woodburn street Monday afternoon and was struck by Garcia-Hernadez's pickup, according to police.

Eyewitness details hit-and-run to KGW

In an exclusive interview with KGW, Lisa Itel said she saw everything.

"I actually saw a toddler come out to the crosswalk and thought to myself, 'that's weird a toddler's out in the crosswalk'... After I passed through the intersection, he [the suspected hit-and-run driver] made the left hand turn," Itel said.

What she saw next horrified her -- she saw the toddler get stuck under the front bumper of the pickup truck. After that, Itel said she pulled into the middle of the street and waved down the driver.

In a probable cause statement obtained by KGW, Itel confirmed to police that she saw Hernandez hit the child. Itel told the court the driver got out of his vehicle and approached the toddler, who was lying in the street.

Hernandez, "stood there for a while, talked on his cell phone and then got in his car and left the area," she said.

The witness statement contradicted claims by Hernandez that he did not know he'd hit the child.

The toddler was with his family at a store near the intersection of Front and Harrison streets around 4 p.m. Monday when he ran into the street and was hit by a white GMC truck, which drove away from the scene after the impact, according to police reports.

The child died at the scene.

Suspect was under influence of cocaine, marijuana

Prosecutors say Hernandez was under the influence of cocaine and marijuana at the time of the incident, and that Hernandez had used cocaine on Sunday night. They also said he had been stopped twice before for driving under the influence of illicit substances. He was charged with DUI on New Year's Day 2006, when he was 21, but was released after a 2008 traffic stop. No charges were filed after the second stop.

The defendant's license was suspended after the 2006 arrest and then reinstated May 1 of that year. He entered a guilty plea and also completed a year-long diversion program that included alcohol treatment.

Hernandez was being held on a $500,000 bail.

A Woodburn mother said the accident was terrifying.

"It brought tears to my eyes. I have four little boys and I don't know what I would do, at all. It's just very sad," Amy Madrigal said.

Madrigal didn't know the 2-year-old victim but said she felt compelled to do something to pull the community together after this tragedy. She placed flowers at the roadside with the help of her young son.

AURORA, Colo. — A victim in a targeted shooting along I-225 on Oct. 18 has died of his injuries, upgrading the suspect's charges from attempted murder to murder, the Aurora Police Department announced on Tuesday.

Celin Villeda Orellana, 38, was arrested on Thursday. Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain announced the same day that the victim — 30-year-old Adolfo Farfan Valdez — was "clinging to life" and was not expected to survive much longer.

APD said it learned Valdez died on Sunday evening. Police worked with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to change the attempted murder charge to first-degree murder. The new charge was approved by a judge on Monday. Orellana also faces charges of first-degree assault, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm.

APD found that Orellana, who is a Honduran national, was planning to flee the country when he was arrested. He was not legally in the United States as of the time of the shooting, Chamberlain said.

The shooting happened around 1:14 a.m. on Oct. 18, when patrol officers with APD responded to multiple reports of a single-vehicle crash on southbound I-225 near E. 6th Avenue. Officers determined that the driver had been shot multiple times, including twice in the neck and once in the arm, before crashing into the jersey barrier, Chamberlain said. The man was brought to a local hospital with serious injuries.

When officers arrived at the crash scene and began to process it, they had very little information to go off of, Chamberlain said. Based on good detective work and their federal partners, they were able to identify Orellana as the suspect, he said.

During the investigation, APD investigators used Flock Safety cameras with license plate readers to see where the victim had traveled that day. While backtracking his movements, they noticed a driver was following the victim all over town and throughout the night. Police determined the other vehicle — the suspect vehicle — was registered to Orellana, APD said. They started to develop probable cause for an arrest.

On Thursday afternoon, APD officers arrested Orellana during a traffic stop near 114th Avenue and Havana Street, and during a search of his car, found a firearm and spent shell casing, Hildebrand said. Because of this, Orellana was transferred to ICE for possible federal charges related to possession of a handgun.

During the press conference, Chamberlain stressed that even though APD did not yet have an arrest warrant ready, they were still able to take the suspect into custody because of those possible federal charges and their partnership with federal agencies on the case.

As far as a motive, Chamberlain said it remains under investigation, but Orellana and the victim knew each other, and both men knew a woman who was also connected with the case. It appeared to be a "relationship issue," he said.

GREENSBORO, Ga. — A shooting at a meat processing plant near Greensboro April 4 left a 30-year-old Union Point man dead and a former co-worker jailed on murder charges, local and state law enforcement authorities say.

Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the man accused of the crimes had been living as an undocumented immigrant in the United States for the past 17 years.

The sheriff said the shooting was believed to have happened at noon at the lower processing plant of Plantation Quail, located at 1940 Ga. Highway 15 South, just on the outskirts of Greensboro.

Harrison said Rod-Riez Dameyian Tripp of Union Point was shot multiple times.

Tripp was treated at the scene by firefighters/first responders with Greene County Fire Rescue and personnel with the Greene County Emergency Medical Services. He was later taken by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.

Greene County Coroner Chris Peters said an emergency department physician pronounced the victim deceased at 1:45 p.m.

An autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause and manner of Tripp’s death.
Results were still pending Monday.

Harrison identified the man accused of shooting Tripp to death as 40-year-old Dimas Sanchez Ruiz of Greensboro.

Deputies from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Greensboro Police Department took the suspect into custody without incident.

Harrison said the suspect was still in the Plantation Quail parking lot when law enforcement officers arrived on the scene.

The sheriff said a 9mm handgun was later found, and he and others involved in the investigation believe that it was the weapon used in the fatal shooting.

Ruiz since has been charged with one count each of felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault.

He was fingerprinted, photographed and jailed at the Greene County Law Enforcement Center in Greensboro.

Ruiz stood before Greene County Chief Magistrate Russell W. Wall Monday for his first appearance hearing, where he was informed of the criminal charges against him.

After the brief hearing, Wall bound the case over to Greene County Superior Court.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been established.

Greene County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Capt. Scott Smith, who heads the criminal investigations division, and several of his investigators are working closely with GBI case Agent Zack Plock to determine what might have led up to the shooting.

Harrison said he had been informed by officials with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that Ruiz had been living illegally in the United States for the past 17 years.

“We are not investigating anything to do with his citizenship status,” Harrison said. “That’s for ICE to deal with. His biggest issue is his current charges.”

Harrison said when the 911 call about the shooting came into a dispatcher, he along with deputies and investigators and officers with the Greensboro Police Department responded.

Because of the nature of the call, the sheriff said troopers with the Georgia State Patrol post in Madison and deputies and investigators with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

Authorities did not know at the time what sort of shooting had taken place, only that several gunshots had been heard and that the suspect was still on the scene.

Harrison said he called Mary Chandler, special agent in-charge of the GBI Region 6 Office, and she along with several other agents responded to the shooting scene as well. A crime scene specialist from the GBI Region 7 Office in Thomson also was called to collect evidence and take photographs of the crime scene.

LOUISA COUNTY., Iowa (KWQC) - The lawyer representing a man accused of killing a man and dragging the body behind a van filed a motion to suspend all proceedings.

The motion filed on Thursday in Louisa County said Salvador Castaneda, 58, suffers a an unspecified mental disorder and cannot follow conversations or simple instructions, and he doesn’t seem to understand his charges or court proceedings.

Another motion was filed to seal the motion to suspend charges because it contains medical information.

Castaneda is accused of shooting Noe Ibarra Tijerina in the head, killing him and then tying a cord around Tijerina’s neck and dragging him behind a van on a gravel road in Columbus Junction on June 26.

Castaneda was charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday. He previously was charged with felony abuse of a corpse after his arrest on June 26.

Police said Castaneda admitted to having a handgun and being with the victim, Noe Ibarra Tijerina, earlier in the day.

Castaneda remains in custody on a $1 million cash bond as well as an immigration detainer that has been issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A deadly car accident in Apex has caught the eye of immigration officials. One of the drivers was supposed to leave the country last year after his roomate was investigated for possible links to terrorism.

Michael Stowe, 31, was killed Monday when his Honda Accord was hit head-on by a truck. The accident happened on Highway 55 near Old Jenks Road in Apex. Chikele Gideon, the truck driver, is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He was working for Stock Building Supply at the time of the acccident.

Gideon is well-known to immigration officials. In April 2002, he was arrested on charges for overstaying his visa. At the time, Gideon was living in Apex with Issaya Nombo, a pilot who was believed to have been linked to al-Qaida through some paperwork found in Afghanistan.
Nombo was eventually deported. Immigration officials said Gideon was supposed to leave the country, but did not.

In July 2003, an immigration judge in Atlanta ordered Gideon to leave the country within 90 days. Gideon appealed the case to the Board of Immigration Appeals in Falls Church, Va. That case is still pending.

After being told of Monday's accident, local immigration officials have filed a detainer on Gideon with the Wake County Jail, raising his bond from $30,000 to $55,000.

A 41-year-old man who had been deported multiple times was sentenced Friday to nearly 33 years in prison for fatally shooting a well-known figure in the local dirt-track racing scene outside the victim’s business in Tacoma.

Jerry Espana Davila was convicted by a jury in July of two first-degree murder charges and two second-degree murder charges in the killing of 64-year-old Virgil “Ray” Stebbins, who owned A to B Auto Sales on South Tacoma Way where he was shot to death inside his car.

On the early morning of Feb. 19, 2024, Espana Davila shot Stebbins twice in the side of the head for reasons still unknown, prosecutors have said. Espana Davila was arrested three days later at the Humane Society of Tacoma & Pierce County after police discovered that a dog left at the crime scene — and later hit by a car in the area — was being picked up from the shelter, court records show.

“The jury saw your actions for what they were: evil,” Stebbins’ daughter, Tabitha Gaulin, told Espana Davila from the witness stand Friday, as she read her victim-impact statement inside a courtroom in Pierce County Superior Court.

After previously losing her mother to cancer and her sister in an accident, Gaulin is now the sole surviving member of her family of four, according to a GoFundMe created by a close friend following Stebbins’ murder. Other family members, including an uncle and aunt, accompanied Gaulin to the sentencing hearing.

Only minutes before the shooting, Stebbins had called police to report a stranger in a white truck on his car lot. The man had asked him for a ride, which Stebbins declined, and also had been walking around Stebbins’ car with a dog, prosecutors said. As a 911 operator told Stebbins that units were en route, groaning could be heard on the line, The News Tribune previously reported.

Espana Davila drove Stebbins’ vehicle away from the scene. It was found later that day, with Stebbins’ body inside, in Central Tacoma, court records show.

Stebbins was a humble, kind and inspirational man, Gaulin said, and Espana Davila had stolen her opportunity to make more memories with him, including on fishing trips and at car races.

“But nothing you did can erase the good that already existed or the love we carry for him,” she said.

The prison term of 32 years and nine months, which prosecutors had asked for, was at the highest end of the sentencing range, according to court records. Due to jurors finding Espana Davila guilty of four types of the same criminal incident, he was sentenced for only one count of first-degree murder, but it had no effect on the length of time behind bars he could have received, according to deputy prosecuting attorney Elizabeth Dasse.

During the trial in July, the prosecution told jurors it could not prove a motive for the killing but that it didn’t have to do so.

“The specter of why Mr. Espana Davila murdered Mr. Stebbins has loomed over this case since its inception. There was no connection between Mr. Espana Davila and Mr. Stebbins, no bad blood, no personal or professional conflict,” Dasse wrote in a sentencing memo late last month.

“The only reasonable conclusion,” Dasse added, “is Mr. Espana Davila believed he had the right to take Mr. Stebbins’s life in those moments and did so in a manner that would best preserve his own interests in flight and avoiding accountability.”

Judge Matthew Thomas, who handed down the sentence, said Friday that Espana Davila declined to participate in a pre-sentencing investigation, leaving questions about any motive to linger unanswered.

Unrestrained and wearing a dark-gray jail uniform and pink undershirt, Espana Davila also declined to provide any comments during his hearing, which several of his family members attended.


“When we talk about seriousness of offense, it’s important to understand the terrible impact this has had on Ray’s family and the people who knew him,” Thomas said. “The grief that you feel is beyond words to describe, but the court recognizes your grief, and I am sorry that you have had to go through this terrible thing.”

Stebbins, a talented musician, had a contagious positive attitude and big smile, according to victim-impact statements filed with the court by family or friends. He was a devoted husband and father who showed resilience and strength despite personal tragedy, filings said. ‘You alone deserve to be held accountable’

Espana Davila, a Mexican national, was previously deported from the country on four occasions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and once by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, an ICE spokesperson told The News Tribune.

He was removed in 2004, 2005, twice in 2007, and 2010, according to the spokesperson. Three of the deportations — excluding both in 2007 (Texas) — stemmed from apprehensions in Washington state, they said.

After Espana Davila was arrested in this case, the spokesperson said ICE lodged an immigration detainer — a request to take a person into federal immigration custody before they are released by local or other authorities.

“If the county does the right thing for public safety by honoring the ICE detainer, we’ll be sure to hold Espana accountable for immigration violations and enter him into removal proceedings,” the spokesperson said in an email to The News Tribune on Oct. 3.

Washington state’s Keep Washington Working Act limits state and local law enforcement’s participation in enforcing federal immigration law in most circumstances.

“The Department of Corrections is allowed to coordinate with the federal government before a non-citizen inmate’s release so that the inmate can be removed from the country,” Adam Faber, a spokesperson for the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, said in an email to The News Tribune on Oct. 3. “In this case, I expect that to be a few decades from now.”

In her statement to the court, Gaulin emphasized that only Espana Davila was to blame for his crime.

“Let me be clear when I say this, you did not murder my father because you came from somewhere else or because you weren’t born in the same place or speak the same primary language,” she said. “You did this because you yourself are evil with no regard for others, and you alone deserve to be held accountable for this awful action.”

Gaurav Sharma, Espana Davila’s court-appointed attorney, called the case a tragedy and said it wasn’t clear why Espana Davila had done what he did. Sharma suggested that his client, who he said has a history of substance-abuse issues, was likely under the influence of some drug — perhaps methamphetamine — at the time of the killing.

“We don’t have all the answers,” he said.

Sharma also acknowledged that Espana Davila was expected to be deported to Mexico after he serves his sentence.

Court records show that Espana Davila was convicted in Texas in 2007 of being in the country unlawfully after a deportation. He also has a felony third-degree assault conviction and a lengthy misdemeanor criminal record in Washington state dating back to 2000, including convictions for theft, assault and DUI, according to court records.

“This loss is forever. There is no sentence long enough, no justice deep enough, to fill the empty space left in our lives,” Gaulin said. “My father’s absence will echo through every celebration, every milestone, and every quiet moment where his loud, joyful voice should be.”

A Pennsylvania woman claimed she dropped her 4-month-old daughter, leading to her injuries — but police allege her boyfriend beat the girl to death because he was apparently uninterested in caring for her.

Jose Melendez Padilla, 24, and Layla Souders, 20, stand accused of killing 4-month-old Ioni Souders, the Susquehanna Township Police Department said in a press release. Cops responded to a call about an infant in cardiac arrest around 2:14 p.m. on March 28 to an apartment in the 3200 block of Wakefield Road outside of Harrisburg. The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by local CBS affiliate WHP, Souders said she had dropped the girl on her head a few days before her death, which could explain the injuries. But the girl reportedly suffered a compound fracture in her right femur along with broken ribs and a skull fracture. Additionally, the girl had traumatic injuries to her brain, neck and chest, according to cops.

Since the injuries were in various forms of healing, police determined they occurred on more than one occasion, the affidavit reportedly said.

Eventually, Souders admitted she made up the story about dropping her and said Melendez Padilla was responsible for abusing the baby, according to cops. She reportedly said her boyfriend had been abusing the baby since late February. Souders said she avoided taking the girl to a checkup visit with the doctor because of her condition, the affidavit said.

Melendez Padilla admitted to some of the abuse, and a search of his text messages reportedly showed his disdain for the child, per cops. He allegedly wrote that he hated the baby and did not want her to be part of their lives.

"I hate that you've felt her for 8 f—ing months, a f—ing life that is not ours," he reportedly wrote Souders. "I hate feeling this hate. I would love to love her, but I swear I can't."

He also reportedly suggested to his girlfriend that they put Ioni up for adoption.

"I hate seeing her everyday," he allegedly wrote.

Melendez Padilla also detailed some of the abuse he inflicted upon the girl. On March 22, he reportedly said he hit the infant, causing her to go unconscious and requiring CPR. A few days later Melendez Padilla noticed an apparent injury to the girl's leg.

"By the way, she has a much fatter right leg (the broken one) compared to the other," he reportedly wrote.
At no point did either defendant seek medical care for the girl. Melendez Padilla reportedly searched Google and TikTok to study the girl's injuries and possible home remedies.

Souders, who deleted her text messages, told cops she left her daughter alone with Melendez Padilla on the day of her death.

Cops arrested Souders on charges of third-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child, conspiracy endangering the welfare of a child, tampering with evidence and conspiracy tampering with evidence. Melendez Padilla stands accused of first-degree murder and the same child abuse and evidence tampering charges as his girlfriend.

Investigators also learned that Melendez Padilla was an undocumented immigrant. According to cops, he entered the country illegally in May 2024 and was supposed to leave in August 2024, but stayed. He also was in possession of illegal identification cards and is facing charges related to that, cops say.

Both are in the Dauphin County Prison without bond. They are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

A York County-based fishing boat — the Captain Billy Haver — was 55 miles off the coast of Massachusetts a few weeks ago, dredging scallops from the sea.

Then, seemingly out of the blue, a crew member started attacking his shipmates with a hammer.

It was 2 p.m. when the vessel’s captain radioed the Coast Guard for help on an international emergency distress channel.

“Mayday, mayday, mayday,” he said in a thick accent. “Can anybody hear me?”

“We have a man gone crazy here on the boat, man,” the captain continued after hearing a reply.

“One man, I don’t know if he’s dead or what. But one of the crew members went crazy, and he started hitting people in the head with a hammer. I got three men that’s injured now. One I can’t wake him up.”

It wasn’t clear what spurred the Sept. 23 attack.

One crew member later told investigators he heard yelling, rounded a corner, was struck three times in the back of the head and fell. He looked up from the deck, he said, and saw a fellow crew member, Franklin “Freddy” Meave Vazquez Jr., 27, of Newport News, holding a knife in one hand and a hammer in the other.

The boat’s chief mate, Javier Rangel Sosa, 54, of Newport News, lay on the deck nearby, blood rushing from his mouth.

Crew members cornered Meave as he climbed the boat’s mast with the hammer and knife, before throwing the knife on the deck, according to court documents.

“He already cut the antenna or something off,” the captain relayed over the radio. That could have been the cause of an initial inability by the captain to hear the Coast Guard’s responses early in the tense distress call.
A nearby German cruise ship, the Mein Schiff 6, got to the scallop boat first.

Sosa — one of the boat’s most experienced and well-liked crew members — was taken lifeless from the vessel he had sailed on countless times, having sustained stab wounds and head injuries.

A cruise ship doctor pronounced him dead.

Meave, 27 — a Mexican national who has lived in the United States for 17 years and in Newport News for 10 — was arrested by the Coast Guard.

Things could have turned out very differently.

In March, Meave was charged with two felonies in a Newport News domestic violence case that carried the potential for significant prison time. And in April — while the domestic case was pending — federal immigration officials determined that Meave was in the country illegally and took him into custody.

But neither of those roadblocks proved enough to stop Meave from boarding the fishing boat as it headed out from its dock in the Seaford section of York County. It left in mid-September with a crew of seven to catch scallops off New England.

The first arrest
Newport News police responded to a domestic abuse complaint from Meave’s wife on March 8.

The 20-year-old said she returned from a girls’ night out at about 12:30 a.m. to the home on Edsyl Street in Menchville, where the couple lived with Meave’s parents.

She said she and Meave were in bed talking about their relationship problems when he snapped. “I want you to see reality,” she said he told her, before he suddenly climbed on top of her “and began to strangle her with both hands,” according to a criminal complaint.

The woman told police she couldn’t breathe, and “believed she blacked out momentarily,” before she scratched Meave, causing him to stop choking her. She tried to call her mother, she said, but Meave grabbed both her cell phones and “repeatedly pushed her onto the bed.”

She said he then “wrapped a black and red scarf around her head” to get her to stop yelling, while keeping her pinned. He finally got off her, she said, when she bit him in the chest and promised not to leave the home.

When she began walking downstairs, she said, Meave grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back upstairs. She told police she tried to call 911 using a voice-activated feature on her iPhone, but it didn’t work. Then Meave climbed back atop her and laughed, she said. “Do you hear a voice?” he asked. “Do you see the devil?”

She finally managed to wrest a phone away and texted a friend. She said Meave warned her he “made a lot of money as a scallop fisherman” and could hire someone to kill her and her family.

But he eventually gave her phone back and allowed her to leave, with her friend picking her up down the street, she said.

Later that day, Newport News police charged Meave with two felonies — strangulation and abduction — and misdemeanor assault and battery. Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Ronald E. Bensten denied Meave bond as he awaited his future court dates, with a protective order also issued.

Circuit Court Judge Timothy S. Fisher overruled the bond decision on March 30, granting Meave’s release under a pretrial program.

Granted freedom
But Meave wasn’t immediately freed.

On April 2, the Newport News City Jail transferred him to federal custody. The U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had determined that the Mexican national was in the U.S. illegally, and put a “detainer” on him at the City Jail.

For a few weeks, Meave was held in a detention center in Farmville, west of Richmond. But despite the pending felony charges, an immigration judge granted him bond during an April 25 hearing in Arlington. He was released two days later.

ICE said in a statement that the judge made the decision “despite ICE’s objections.”

Immigration judges are not part of the federal judiciary. They’re employees of the U.S. Justice Department, which declined to release details of Meave’s case, including the amount of the bond and the judge’s name.

But Lindsay and Shelby McDannold, the parents of Meave’s ex-wife, told the Daily Press the judge was Roxanne C. Hladylowycz, who set bond at $20,000.

According to DOJ policy, immigration judges should be guided by “whether the alien’s release would pose a danger to property or persons, whether the alien is likely to appear for further immigration proceedings, and whether the alien is a threat to national security.”

The Daily Press filed a federal Freedom of Information Act request last week for more information about the case, but has not yet received a response.

“I was quite surprised when I found out they had released him,” said Robin Farkas, the prosecutor in the Newport News domestic abuse case. “I don’t know that we’ve had a case before where ICE had someone, and he was released. It’s just not normal, especially in this environment.”

By the time Meave came to court for the Newport News case a few weeks later, his wife had told prosecutors she would not testify against him. She said before the May 15 hearing that she wanted Meave to get mental health and substance abuse treatment instead of being jailed, Farkas said.

The prosecutor said Meave’s wife also knew a conviction could lead to his removal from the country.

“She didn’t want to do anything that would hold him or get him deported,” Farkas said. “That’s something we battle in a lot of cases. They don’t want to be abused, but also don’t want (deportation) to happen to the people they love.”

Meave’s mother-in-law, Lindsay McDannold, 39, of Richmond, said he was addicted to heroin. She said Meave’s relatives begged her daughter not to testify against him, saying that if he went back to Mexico, “He was going to be murdered by the cartels.”

“It was a huge sob story,” McDannold said. “She felt bad. She didn’t want to be responsible for that. She tries to see the good in people.”

Without the wife’s testimony, Farkas said, there was no way to move forward with the prosecution.
She and Meave’s lawyer, Cathy Krinick, worked out a plea deal.

The two felonies were dropped, while Meave admitted to the misdemeanor assault and agreed to enter a domestic violence prevention program. But he got a “deferred disposition,” meaning there would be no conviction on his record if he stayed out of trouble for two years.

Sosa’s last trip

Built in 1996, the vessel is named after a fishing captain who drowned after going down with his boat 50 miles off Norfolk 18 years ago.

Officials with Seaford Scallop declined to comment on the Sept. 23 slaying, but said they don’t own the Captain Billy Haver. It’s one of 14 independently owned vessels whose catch they buy.

Juan Araiza, of Virginia Beach, the president of the company that owns the boat, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

The victim’s son, Javier Sosa Jr., 33, said the vessel left the Seaford dock about Sept. 18, headed for the New England coast. He said the elder Sosa was chief mate for the trip, and had been at the wheel just before the attack, southeast of Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island.

Another crew member told the family that Meave snapped while the fishermen were performing a mundane task: moving dredged scallops from the deck to a freezer called the “ice hold.”

Javier Sosa Jr. said his brother knew Meave at Newport News’ Warwick High School. The elder Sosa had told his family that Meave “caused trouble” on prior trips and that he wasn’t getting along wither other crewmates.

Javier Rangel Sosa lived with his wife, Graciela, in a well-kept mobile home on Onancock Trail. That’s off Jefferson Avenue in Denbigh, south of the Newport News airport.

He grew up the youngest of 11 children in Mexico and had been on fishing boats since age 12, often sailing from Texas, his son said. He was a boat captain by 16.

Sosa’s son said he moved to Virginia decades ago and became a U.S. citizen about 10 years ago. He and his wife raised their sons here: Javier Jr., now a fisherman in New Bedford, Mass.; and Jonathan, who works at a Texas car dealership.

The couple planned to retire in a few years to Mexico, where Sosa owned a house and a laundry business.

He loved his small dog, Pepe, and was “a people person,” Javier Sosa Jr. said. “He tried to make people smile. If he went up to the cash register, he would try to make (the cashier) laugh and smile. … If he sees someone, he would talk, he would say hi. I wish I had that trait.”

An official at Seafood Scallop who has known Sosa for 25 years described him as hard-working and well-liked on the company’s docks. “He’s a real good man, a really good family man,” he said.

The victim’s nephew, 27-year-old Jesus Sosa — who lives in Mexico but stayed with the Sosas in Newport News for six months this year — said his uncle’s place in the family is legendary.

“He’s the greatest fisherman in Virginia, for real,” Jesus Sosa said. “In my family, everybody wants to be just like him. He always helped everybody, was good to everybody. … I’m so proud of him. He showed me everything.”
A neighbor, Ricky Travis, 48, said that during snowstorms, he and Sosa would shovel out parts of the street.
During one big hurricane, Travis said, Sosa drove to North Carolina and bought a generator, hooking it up for five neighbors so long as they helped pay for gas.

The front of Sosa’s trailer, near his black late-model Chevy pickup truck, is lined with hundreds of large rocks dredged from the sea. He planted an apple tree near the trailer, and just completed a new wooden door landing. Sosa and Travis would often talk on Sosa’s porch, Sosa always in his favorite chair.

“That was my dude, that was my friend,” Travis said. “If you needed something, he would do what he could do to help you out. That’s the kind of dude he was.”

Shock and regrets
Meave, now locked up in the Boston area, couldn’t be reached for comment for this story. His lawyer, Assistant Federal Public Defender Stylianus Sinnus, did not return a call. A trial date has not yet been set, but Meave faces life in prison on the charges.

A man who answered the door on the family’s home on Edsyl Street identified himself as Meave’s father. “I don’t really know what happened,” he said, before a woman came to the door and told a Daily Press reporter to leave.
A neighbor, Donald Gilman, 23, called Meave “a quiet but good guy,” saying he wouldn’t have expected this “in a million years.”

Meave’s wife’s parents, Lindsay and Shelby McDannold, said their daughter met Meave through friends and married him in June 2017. “He was very nice to her at first and made her a lot of promises,” Lindsay McDannold said.

But their daughter regrets not having her husband prosecuted in the domestic abuse case, they said. She thought the possible deportation would be “a wake-up call” for him to change his ways.

“She really didn’t think he was capable of murder until it happened,” McDannold said. “She instead wanted him to do the drug screening and stay out of trouble and reform his life.”

“She deeply regrets dropping the charges, and deeply regrets ever meeting him,” Shelby McDannold added.
The McDannolds say they don’t understand why the immigration judge released Meave on bond.

Aside from the immigration hold and the then-pending felony abuse charges, court paperwork says that Meave had a misdemeanor shoplifting conviction in Hampton in 2015 — reduced in a plea agreement from a felony larceny. He also had pending drug charges in New Jersey and past dropped drug charges in Newport News.

“They knew about the felony charges and the drug charges, and they still let him out,” Lindsay McDannold said. “It could have been my daughter that he did this to. ICE was objecting left, right and center. … But the system failed long before that. There were so many opportunities to stop it.”

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio —A Middletown man accused in connection to a fatal traffic crash in German Township last August has been sentenced to prison.

The crash happened on Aug. 5, when German Township police responded to a two‐vehicle traffic crash on State Route 4 between Eby Road and Butler County Line.

The crash involved an SUV and a passenger car that had hit head‐on. The driver of the car, later identified as Kelsey Elizabeth Slivinski, 24, was killed in the crash.

Cristian Jesus Villajuarez-Castillo, 20, was indicted on four counts related to the crash, including aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.

According to the prosecutor, eyewitness statements and other evidence determined the defendant was driving erratically before the crash.

The investigation also revealed the defendant has no driver's license, was driving in excess of 80 mph at the time of the crash, and was an undocumented immigrant living in the United States illegally.

On Friday, Montgomery County prosecuting attorney Mat Heck Jr. announced that Villajuarez-Castillo was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty on multiple charges.

Villajuarez-Castillo was also handed a lifetime driver's license suspension, was ordered to pay over $25,000 in restitution, and faces deportation after he completes his prison term.

HOPE MILLS, NC - On January 21, police arrested Edis Quintanilla-Alvarenga, 25, after he reportedly slammed his 2011 Acura into a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in the 3700 block of Golfview Road.

The driver of the Malibu, 37-year-old Megan Erin Shelby was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Quintanilla-Alvarenga was caught on another driver’s dashboard camera, as the illegal alien crossed the double yellow line going 80 mph (45 miles over the posted speed limit), just second before he hit Shelby head-on, according to court documents.

Quintanilla-Alvarenga’s blood alcohol level was .17, more than twice the legal limit.

The Honduran national is in the country illegally and has never held a North Carolina driver’s license.

His victim was a nurse at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Quintanilla-Alvarenga was charged with felony death by vehicle and DWI. He is currently being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $1 million bail.

On November 6, 2018,Ennis Wright was elected sheriff and soon implemented a ‘sanctuary policy,’ refusing to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Rather than honoring ICE detainers, Cumberland County deputies are now forced to simply release illegal aliens back onto the streets, when they make bond.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security quietly corrected false information it published after The Charlotte Observer reported it incorrectly said a Honduran man charged in a Charlotte murder was released “back onto North Carolina’s streets... after authorities failed to honor the ICE detainer.”

The man has never been released, the Observer reported. DHS did not reply to requests for comment, but it corrected its statement online. The updated statement does not have a correction line or indicate any changes have been made.

DHS, the department that oversees Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, released a statement after Border Patrol agents landed in Charlotte on Nov. 15. It listed “a handful of the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens — including murderers, rapists, and pedophiles — who were RELEASED back onto North Carolina’s streets because of sanctuary policies.”

The department said “Jose Ulloa-Martinez, a criminal illegal alien from Honduras, was arrested for murder” and “released after authorities failed to honor the ICE detainer.”

A review of court and jail records showed that was false. Ulloa-Martinez, 43, has been in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center since he was arrested in Texas and extradited to Charlotte in June 2024. Police say he killed Kevin Merlos-Saravia in east Charlotte on May 26.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden said the federal government’s information was “simply untrue.”

DHS has previously criticized McFadden for not “honoring” ICE detainers; McFadden has complied with state law. A judge received an ICE detainer in September and ordered McFadden to continue to hold him for 48 hours. But sheriff’s office spokesperson Bradley Smith said ICE agents never came for Ulloa-Martinez.

The Observer previously reported that another man, Jose Rivera-Martinez, was arrested and charged with being accessories in the murder by helping Ulloa-Martinez flee to Texas. A magistrate briefly released him from jail after what the sheriff described as a document mix-up.

Misinformation from federal agencies
The falsehood in the DHS statement comes as court proceedings across the country unearth misinformation spread by federal immigration agents. In Chicago, Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol supervisor, admitted he lied under oath about being hit in the head with a rock before deploying tear gas at protesters.

In Charlotte Thursday, video played in court contradicted statements by federal agents that Miguel Angel Garcia Martinez assaulted them with his car in a Nov. 16 incident that left one officer injured. Martinez fled from a “voluntary stop,” and agents ran into him, video played in court shows.

Police started looking for Ulloa-Martinez after his wife called 911. She told police he and Merlos-Saravia had been drinking for hours on May 25, 2024 — a Saturday evening. She woke up to gunshots at 3 a.m. the next day and found Merlos-Saravia “lying on his back by the stairs and Jose’s vehicle no longer in the parking lot,” according to the arrest affidavit.

She said her husband was “known to shoot” when drinking.

Texas police arrested Ulloa-Martinez in Houston weeks later, on June 3, 2024, and he was extradited to Charlotte June 24, 2024.

He has remained under McFadden’s custody since.

(CNN) -- Humberto Leal Garcia Jr., a Mexican national convicted of raping and killing a 16-year-old girl in 1994, was executed by lethal injection Thursday evening in Texas.

The case's flurry of legal appeals and pleas for clemency were prompted by an international dispute over the rights of the foreign-born on American death rows.

The Supreme Court earlier denied a stay of execution for the convicted killer, despite opposition from the Obama administration and the Mexican government.

Leal was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. CT (7:21 p.m. ET), according to a corrections spokeswoman.

"I am sorry for everything I have done," Leal said at the Huntsville facility before he was executed. "I have hurt a lot of people. Let this be final and be done. I take the full blame for this."


Mexican national executed: Death row case goes beyond borders
Leal then shouted "Viva Mexico," followed by "I'm ready warden, let's get the show on the road."

His last meal consisted of fried chicken, pico de gallo, tacos, two colas and a bowl of fried okra.

What made Leal's conviction unusual was that he was not informed about his right to contact the Mexican consulate upon his arrest -- a right guaranteed under a binding international treaty. Leal's appellate lawyers argued such access could at the very least have kept Leal off death row.

Mexico strongly condemned the execution, saying it violated an International Court of Justice ruling ordering the United States to review capital convictions of Mexican nationals.

Leal, 38, was convicted of raping Adria Sauceda, a 16-year-old girl in San Antonio, and then fatally strangling and bludgeoning her with a 35-pound piece of asphalt in 1994.

The Supreme Court justices split 5-4 along conservative-liberal lines in denying a stay of execution. In an unsigned opinion by the majority, the court refused to delay the execution until Congress could pass pending legislation giving federal courts the authority to hear similar claims from foreign inmates.

"We decline to follow the United States' suggestion of granting a stay to allow Leal to bring a claim based on hypothetical legislation when it cannot even bring itself to say that his attempt to overturn his conviction has any prospect of success," said the majority.

In dissent, four justices led by Stephen Breyer urged a delay in moving ahead with Leal's execution. "It is difficult to see how the State's interest in the immediate execution of an individual convicted of capital murder 16 years ago can outweigh the considerations that support additional delay, perhaps only until the end of the summer," said Breyer, who was supported by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan.

Sandra Babcock, lead appellate attorney, said, "it is shameful that Mr. Leal will pay the price for our inaction. The need for congressional action to restore our reputation and protect our citizens is more urgent than ever."

"This case was not just about one Mexican national on death row in Texas," Babcock said in a statement. "The execution of Mr. Leal violates the United States' treaty commitments, threatens the nation's foreign policy interests, and undermines the safety of all Americans abroad."

The state's Board of Pardons and Parole ruled that Leal did not deserve to have his death sentence commuted to life in prison without parole.

The victim's mother, Rachel Terry, had called for the execution.

"A technicality doesn't give anyone a right to come to this country and rape, torture and murder anyone, in this case my daughter," she told CNN affiliate KSAT in San Antonio. Terry described her daughter as "a beautiful, bright, vibrant young woman, full of hope and aspirations."

"It's been difficult for myself and her family members," she added. "She certainly was taken away from us at a very young age. We just want closure."

Leal's lawyers argued the consulate access violation was more than a technicality. Babcock told CNN that Mexican officials would have ensured Leal had the most competent trial defense possible, if they had been able to speak with him right after his felony arrest.

"I think in most of these cases it was not a deliberate thing. Local police lack training" on the Vienna Convention, Babcock said, referring to the international agreement that includes consular access.

Leal's backers say he had learning disabilities and brain damage, and suffered from sexual abuse at the hands of his parish priest, and that consul officials would have assisted in such a defense. They say those factors should have been considered at the sentencing phase of the trial.

Leal claimed he did not learn of his consular access right until two years after his capital conviction. He said he learned of the right not from any official, but from a fellow prisoner.

Eventually, between 2010 and 2011, Leal was visited by a representative of the Mexican government more than 10 times, said Judy Garces, press relations spokeswoman with the Mexican Consulate in San Antonio.

The state argued that Leal -- who has lived in the United States since age 2 -- never revealed his Mexican citizenship at the time of arrest, and his defense team never raised the consular access issue at or before trial.

Prosecutors also said the evidence against him was indisputable. The victim was tortured, and a bite mark on her body was matched to Leal. A bloody shirt belonging to Sauceda was discovered at the suspect's home. The two had attended a party separately earlier that evening. The girl's nude body was found on a dirt road.

Leal was one of 40 Mexican citizens awaiting lethal injection in U.S. prisons.

The issue turned on what role each branch of government plays in giving force to international treaty obligations.
Three years ago, the Supreme Court justices concluded Texas could execute another Mexican man sentenced to death for murder. Jose Medellin was given a lethal injection by the state a few months later.

The question then and now is whether the state has to give in to a demand by the president that the prisoner be allowed new hearings and sentencing. In the 2008 case, President George W. Bush made that demand reluctantly after an international court concluded Medellin was improperly denied access to his consulate before his original prosecution, a violation of the treaty signed by the United States decades ago.

The Mexican government filed a supporting appeal with the high court in Washington this past week, asking the justices to block Leal's execution, citing Bush's previous executive action.

On Friday, the Obama administration asked Texas to delay the execution.

"This case implicates United States foreign policy interests of the highest order," including protecting U.S. citizens abroad and promoting good relations with other countries, new Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. said.

Congress has also stepped in. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, introduced a bill in June to formally grant federal courts the power to review these kinds of appeals.

"This case is not an isolated instance; the issue of consular notification remains a serious diplomatic and legal concern," Leahy said Thursday.

Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry's office countered that a federal appeals court had already given Leal the judicial scrutiny the Obama administration and the United Nations seek, ultimately rejecting his claims.

"If you commit the most heinous of crimes in Texas, you can expect to face the ultimate penalty under our laws," Katherine Cesinger, spokeswoman for the governor, told CNN. "Congress has had the opportunity to consider and pass legislation for the federal courts' review of such cases since 2008, and has not done so each time a bill was filed."

Ted Cruz, the state's former solicitor general who argued the 2008 Supreme Court case for Texas, said Leal waited too long to raise these issues.

"The question is not should a foreign national have the right to contact their consulate," Cruz told CNN. "The question is, years later, after they have been tried, after they have been convicted, after it has been clear like Humberto Leal that they are a vicious child rapist and murderer, should you come in and set aside that conviction. You can't come back years later and try and set aside your trial with some additional claim you wish you had raised."

Cruz is now running for the U.S. Senate as a Republican candidate.

The Supreme Court appeal is Leal v. Texas (11-5001).

DENHAM SPRINGS, La. – The family of 15-year-old Kendan “Big Jody” Saplut is asking for the community’s support following his tragic death after being struck by a suspected drunk driver.

The crash occurred on the evening of August 21 along Magnolia Boulevard near Whiteleaf Street. According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, Saplut was riding his bicycle when he was hit. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries on August 22.

The driver, identified as 31-year-old Juan Alfredo Chavarria Lezama, was arrested at the scene and booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center. Authorities say his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He is facing multiple charges, including:


  • Vehicular Homicide
  • DWI (1st Offense)
  • Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
  • No Driver’s License


  • ICE Detainer

In the wake of the tragedy, Saplut’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and honor his memory. The fundraiser describes Kendan as “full of life, laughter, and love,” and notes that “his kindness touched everyone who knew him.”“His passing has left a hole in the hearts of his family, friends, and community that can never be filled,” the family wrote.

Kendan, affectionately known as “Big Jody,” is remembered for his joyful spirit and big heart. His death has left a lasting impact on those who knew and loved him.

ERIE Co., Ohio (WTVG) - Four Guatemalan nationals wanted in connection with a murder in New Mexico were arrested Thursday at a Milan Township-area motel by Erie County Sheriff’s deputies.
Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth said his department was contacted Thursday morning by the Lea County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico about suspects who had fled their jurisdiction after a murder that occurred on New Year’s Day.

“Lea County did an outstanding job; of course, they had the investigation; they also had the warrants for the individuals, and they had the approximate location where they may be, and they were spot on,” Sigsworth said.

When local authorities tracked the suspects to that Milan Township-area motel, deputies spotted a car occupied by the suspects as the group left the motel parking lot and stopped the vehicle.

“By both the detectives and uniformed deputies, there were a total of four occupants in the car,” Sigsworth said.

Elman Franco, 26, of Tatum, New Mexico, is charged through the state of New Mexico with murder, robbery, intimidation or retaliation against a witness, kidnapping and tampering with evidence.

His brother, Elder Franco, 30, of an unknown address in New Mexico, is charged with the same offenses.

Maylina Santos, 28, of an unknown address, is charged with tampering with evidence and is an acquaintance of one of the brothers.

Manuel Morales, 46, of Clovis, New Mexico, is charged locally through Erie County with three counts of obstructing justice, each a third-degree felony.

All four suspects are Guatemalan nationals who are illegally in the United States, according to Sigsworth. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed detainers on all four individuals.

The suspects face charges for the New Year’s Day fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Elvis Santos of Tatum, New Mexico.

Investigators said they don’t believe there is a connection between the suspects and Erie County. Sigsworth said he believes the group was traveling on the turnpike.

“And we believe they may have been en route back to get on the pike when they were stopped,” Sigsworth said.

Morales is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Monday in Erie County Municipal Court.

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) is calling attention to a fatal crash in Delaware County, Ohio, where a truck driver, who he says is an immigrant from Somalia with naturalized American citizenship, is accused of killing the Soposki family.

On April 11, Modou Ngom was driving a semi-truck when he caused a crash on I-71 that killed 37-year-old Luke Soposki, his wife, 36-year-old Lynnea Soposki, their one-year-old baby boy, Logan, and injured three other people.

Moreno, in a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin, says Ngom is actually an illegal alien because he “falsified his identity, lied to immigration officials to achieve naturalization, fraudulently obtained a Commercial Driver’s License (“CDL”), and established a trucking company on false pretenses.”

“Simply put, he is a criminal and should never have been in the U.S. in the first place,” Moreno writes:

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ngom first came to the United States in the 1990s and thereafter used several different names and birth dates to obtain both state and federal IDs. Investigators say that around 2003, Ngom illegally obtained a new Ohio driver’s license under a different identity, followed by a CDL in 2007 under the false identity, and was ultimately naturalized as a U.S. citizen in the mid-2010s using the same fake identity. State records then show that he changed his name from his alias, Lamine Gaye, back to Modou Ngom. [Emphasis added]

This case is not an isolated administrative failure—it is a systemic breakdown with fatal consequences. An innocent family, including a one-year-old child, lost their lives because an illegal alien was able to evade enforcement and operate a commercial vehicle. This same individual had prior safety violations under Ohio Revised Code § 4513.02, including operating an unsafe vehicle just last year. When the federal government turns a blind eye and fails to police its own borders, it is innocent American families on Ohio roads who pay the ultimate price. It is no surprise to me that this man was not apprehended under the Biden Administration. Nonetheless, lessons must be learned from this preventable tragedy. [Emphasis added]

Though Ngom was indicted on April 16 for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, Moreno says he wants to see the Department of Justice (DOJ) bring charges against Ngom, including immigration fraud, making false statements, and identity-document crimes.

“I also encourage the Department of State — if it is determined that Ngom procured U.S. citizenship through fraud or willful misrepresentation — to initiate denaturalization consistent with federal law,” Moreno writes:

These needless tragedies are avoidable with staunch enforcement of our immigration laws.

Fortunately, President Trump has taken historic steps to remove illegal aliens from our nation. We must choose the safety of American families over those who spit in the face of our laws and customs. When that responsibility is neglected, the consequences are measured in American lives. If we cannot protect our own citizens from fraudsters, then our immigration and licensing regimes are not just broken they are complicit. [Emphasis added]

Moreno wants to know how Ngom first came to the United States, what aliases he used to obtain state and federal IDs, what documents he used to gain naturalized citizenship, and what steps the Department of Transportation and DHS will take to fix the loopholes Ngom used to gain a CDL.

A previously deported illegal alien, who was on the run for 15 years, will serve just two years in prison for having killed 16-year-old Megan Ratliff in a 2010 drunk driving crash in Indianapolis, Indiana.

On Thursday, a judge in Marion Superior Court sentenced Israel Espinosa to a two-year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to felony reckless homicide for killing Megan Ratliff.

As part of the plea deal, the state dropped charges of failure to stop after a crash, operating a vehicle without having a license, and failure to stop at an accident against Espinosa.

The sentence comes more than 15 years after Megan died in the crash, which occurred on Nov. 27, 2010. Police said Espinosa was drunk driving when he drove through a traffic light and hit an SUV in which Megan was a passenger.

When police arrived on the scene of the crash, Megan was pinned under the SUV after having been ejected from the vehicle.

Fifteen years after driving drunk and killing Megan, in September 2015, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that agents had located and arrested Espinosa in Oklahoma.

The Ratliff family told journalist Angela Ganote that they are unhappy with the plea deal offered to Espinosa, which has resulted in his relatively short prison sentence.

PROVO, Utah — The day after a two-year-old girl was killed, and a 4-year-old boy injured, after being struck by a vehicle in Provo, a family is left wondering why the woman arrested was driving as she was in the first place.

The Sandoval-Martinez family tolf FOX 13 News that they spent Tuesday much like any other. Jorge Sandoval was with his kids outside their home at the Brough Trailer Court around 1 p.m., and were planning to go out to lunch together.

That’s when police said Nereyda Miranda was driving throught the community with trash bags on the hood of her car in the moments before - hitting and killing two-year-old Claudia Isela Sandoval.

“He doesn’t know why the lady didn’t look out, why she had bags on her car,” said Claudia's aunt, Kathleen Vaca Zepeda, translating for Sandovalm

The family added that Miranda lived in the trailer court, just a matter of feet from the nearest dumpster.

“She could’ve just walked to the dumpster, thrown out her trash, went back to her car and headed on her way,” Zepeda claimed.

Initially arrested on a manslaughter charge, court documents also show the 28-year-old is a Guatemalan native and now has a federal ICE hold.

Sandoval’s hands are still scarred from punching through her car window as he spoke with raw emotion about what happened.

“I didn’t leave my kids by the side of the road - I was with them, every second,” Sandoval said while holding back tears.

Four-year-old Esequiel who was injured is now home from the hospital.

“He can’t walk,” explained Zepeda. “His leg and foot are turning purple as of now.”

The family has left the neighborhood as their daughter’s sudden absence is still too much to bear.

They're seeking help with funeral costs and medical expenses, with Zepeda having organized a fundraiser to help her family through a painful tragedy.

TEMPLE, Texas — A man was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the 2020 death of his girlfriend in Georgetown, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Hernan Perez Juarez, 41, also known as "Patricio Perez," was arrested Monday in the 700 block of South Fourth Street in Temple by the U.S. Marshals-led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force.

Sandra De La Cruz was found stabbed to death in the bathtub of her apartment in the 2200 block of Tower Drive in Georgetown on May 10, 2020, according to an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit says Georgetown police responded to a welfare check at the residence and found De La Cruz deceased with a deep laceration to her lower abdomen. An autopsy determined she had been stabbed eight times.

A witness told police De La Cruz had gotten into an argument with Perez Juarez two days before she was found dead, the affidavit said.

"Affiant and Crime Scene Technicians located handwritten letters were discovered taped on the bathroom and master bedroom mirrors which described an argument that occurred "yesterday" about possibly breaking up a relationship. From the content of the letters, Affiant believes that Sandra and Hernan argued about ending their relationship prior to her death," the affidavit said.

Investigators found Perez Juarez's vehicle, a blue Ford F150, abandoned in Laredo near the U.S.-Mexico border. The Georgetown Police Department requested assistance from the task force after suspecting Perez Juarez had fled to Mexico.

Task force members developed information this month indicating he had returned to the U.S. illegally, the U.S. Marshals said.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Perez Juarez was deported in 2018 for an immigration violation and had no legal status in the U.S. ICE has filed an immigration detainer following the criminal proceedings, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Perez Juarez was transported to the Williamson County Jail.

LAGRANGE, Ga. - A man who police said was in the country illegally stabbed and killed his roommate at a LaGrange apartment early Monday morning.

Carlos Eduardo Gomez Rios, 27, who police said was deported from the US in 2016 and is currently in the country illegally, was charged with the murder of 40-year-old Crecensio Rosas De La Rosa.

LaGrange police said officers were called to the Woodland Trail apartments located at 140 North Davis Road around 1:40 a.m. for an unknown disturbance. Police said officers found Crecensio Rosas De La Rosa in the bedroom suffering from apparent stab wounds to the neck. He was rushed to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center where he later died.

Investigators said the victim and the suspect along with two others were all roommates. At some point in the morning, the two got into an argument that led to the stabbing, investigators said.

Carlos Eduardo Gomez Rios was arrested in the parking lot of the apartment complex and booked into the Troup County Jail.

A deadly Oregon crash involving an illegal immigrant truck driver is igniting fresh outrage over immigration policies tied to Gov. Gavin Newsom and the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, after federal agents re-arrested a suspect weeks after he was released by local officials.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed it took Rajinder Kumar, 32, into custody on Wednesday, April 22. He is now being held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma and is facing removal proceedings.



Kumar was initially arrested on charges of criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangering. His bail was later increased to $500,000. dhs.gov

Kumar was arrested just days after he had been released on April 2, 2026, when Oregon politicians declined to cooperate with ICE, despite his involvement in a fatal crash months earlier.

The incident dates back to Nov. 24, 2025, when Kumar’s semi-truck jackknifed across both lanes of US Highway 20 in Deschutes County, Oregon.

The couple had been married just 16 days.

Federal officials say Kumar entered the US illegally near Lukeville, Arizona, on Nov. 28, 2022, and was released into the country under the Biden administration.

He later received work authorization and obtained a commercial driver’s license in California under Newsom’s administration.
“This illegal alien was issued a CDL by Gavin Newsom’s California. He then went on to recklessly drive a truck on America’s highways and KILL two honeymooners,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement.

“Instead of cooperating with ICE law enforcement, Oregon sanctuary politicians RELEASED him from jail back into American communities. Every time sanctuary politicians release a dangerous criminal illegal alien back into our communities, they are gambling with American lives. We are grateful to our ICE law enforcement officers who tracked this killer down to ensure he’s permanently removed from America’s highways and can never harm another American family again.”

A family is "struggling to make sense of something that is senseless" after a 22-year-old woman and her boyfriend were shot and killed in Loudoun County.

Mijal Conejero-Romera and Diego Alexander Woollett, both 22, were identified by investigators as the two who were found shot in Sterling and later died at an area hospital on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

A friend of the family who had known Conejero-Romera since she was 8 years old described her as "such a sweet girl, (who was) always smiling.

"We don't know how we're going to go on," she continued. "She was a big part of our lives, especially my granddaughter ... They were best friends and talked all the time.

"Saying goodbye is never easy, but to me, it's harder because she was so young ... 22."

Tributes praising Conejero-Romera's personality and demeanor poured in following her death, with most expressing their shock that the woman was gunned down next to her boyfriend.

"When I think of Mijal, I always think of that little girl that first came to my house," the family friend said.

"She was so quiet. She would sit on the couch with her feet on the floor and her hands folded in her lap.

"Don't get me wrong, when you got to know her, you could see her who she was. she was a funny, smart and inquisitive little girl."

She was also described as being "caring, and compassionate.

"She knew how important family is. She was, and will always be, loved and missed," she continued.
"Nothing will ever be the same, yet we still have to find a way to go on."

The family is hopeful of putting Conejero-Romera to rest on Thursday, Sept. 5, though nothing was officially confirmed pending the probe into her death.

"Mijal was loved by her family and friends. We can't understand this senseless act of violence," loved ones said. "Profound grief and disbelief overwhelm us.

"She had dreams and plans for the future. All of that was lost when we lost her."

A candle lighting and balloon release was also planned for Sunday night. T-shirts supporting the family have also been made as they plan to put the 22-year-old to rest.

Another friend demanded justice for Conejero-Romera, who reportedly took care of her elderly parents.

"We need to bring her justice" a friend wrote. "She did not deserve such cruelty. She was only 22 years old.

"She had a long life ahead of her. Ill never get to see her have children and she’ll never get to see my son grow up,' she posted on Facebook. "She was a hard working woman who was getting off of work with her boyfriend."

POLK COUNTY, Iowa —The Des Moines East High School community is mourning the death of Santiago “Santi” Rhone, a 15-year-old East High School sophomore who was struck by a motorcycle Saturday night on Northeast 29th Street.

Friends and family say the promising student-athlete was beloved and left a profound mark on those who knew him.

“Santiago was a remarkable young man whose passion and work ethic touched everyone who knew him,” his mother said in a statement.

She said his drive helped him earn a spot on East High’s varsity baseball team as a freshman, and that the same determination fueled his success in the classroom.

“He worked tirelessly, spending late nights practicing and early mornings chasing his dream of going pro,” she said.

“He excelled in school with the same determination, proving he wasn’t just an athlete, but a scholar and leader as well.”

Close family friend Keon Patton, who has known Santiago for about a decade and gave him his first haircut, said the family is devastated.

“The family is not doing well. Everybody is really hurt. And time has just stopped in their world,” Patton said.

A neighbor who lives near the crash site said the loss hits close to home.

“It’s tragic … it hurts. It upsets me,” Tony Condon said. “I have a 15-year-old myself, and to think if something were to happen to him like that.”

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the East High School baseball field.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the motorcycle’s driver, Kaelin Meinders, 23, is hospitalized with injuries from the crash.

STAMFORD, CT- On Jan. 2, 2023, two-year-old Liam Rivera’s body was found buried inside a plastic bag, News 8 reported. Investigators determined Liam had been killed a week earlier and died from blunt-force trauma to his head two days after he was injured, officials said at the time.

Last December, Liam’s parents, Iris Rivera-Santos, 28, and father, Edgar Ismalej-Gomez, also 28, who were implicated in the death, pleaded guilty to charges and will accept court-ordered dispositions which call for 16-year prison sentences. They are scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 10.

Ismalej-Gomez pleaded guilty to risk of injury to a minor, cruelty to persons, tampering with evidence, conspiracy to commit tampering with evidence, unlawful removal of a dead body, hindering prosecution, violation of a protective order, and violation of probation. Oh, by the way, he is an illegal alien.


Liam’s mother, Rivera-Santos, pleaded guilty to two counts of risk of injury to a minor, two counts of tampering with evidence, cruelty to persons, conspiracy to commit tampering with evidence, unlawful removal of a dead body, and falsely reporting an incident.

In yet another failure of Connecticut Child Protective Services, the family had an open child abuse case with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families and the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters, News 8 reported.

Ismalej-Gomez is precisely the type of person that unhinged leftists in sanctuary jurisdictions like Minnesota AND Connecticut are protecting.

According to the Tennessee Star, Ismalej-Gomez is an illegal alien from Guatemala who had already been convicted and served time for abusing his son when Liam was only eight months old. If the Connecticut Department of Corrections had been allowed to contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when he was about to be released from incarceration, chances are Liam would still be alive.

In 2019, the poorly-named “Constitution State” passed the so-called “Trust Act,” which significantly restricted the ability of law enforcement officers to cooperate with ICE. The law, signed into law by feckless Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (a Democrat, of course), prohibits law enforcement officers from arresting or detaining an individual pursuant to an immigration detainer absent a number of conditions.

In 2025, the Trust Act was expanded to allow individuals to sue towns and cities that cooperate with federal immigration authorities in a way that “goes against state law,” the CT Mirror reported.

To be fair, the 2025 update would have allowed officers to involve ICE if a detainer was held, expanding the crimes to include injury or risk of injury to a child. Unfortunately for Liam, that change is a day late and a dollar short.

One of those who supported the updated bill, Sen. Herron Gaston, a Democrat, sang the typical progressive leftist praises of the bill:

“What we’re showing is that Connecticut is a moral example of what other states should be like. Connecticut has positioned itself as a leader in human rights and immigrant justice [emphasis added]. Expanding the Trust Act shows that this state is willing to stand by its immigrant community and promote a compassionate, just legal framework–something that other states need to emulate,” he said.

Question for Gaston–what is “compassionate” about allowing an illegal alien to remain in the country who then goes and beats the crap out of his eight-month-old son, only to kill him a year later?? How does that make Connecticut a “moral example?”

Possibly the most hilarious thing came from Lamont, who issued a statement after Attorney General Pam Bondi referred to Connecticut as a “sanctuary jurisdiction.”

“Connecticut is not a ‘sanctuary’ state. That term has no legal definition, and it is not an accurate description of our laws and practices. Labeling Connecticut a ‘sanctuary’ ignores the reality that our approach mirrors that of many other states [all run by Democrats] that have adopted clear rules for cooperation [not] with federal immigration authorities. These rules keep our communities safe [they don’t], respect due process, and allow police to focus resources where they are most needed.”

Dear Ned: allowing police to focus on illegal gang-banging criminals meets the definition of “where they are most needed.”

Merriam-Webster defines sanctuary as: a place of refuge or protection; and the immunity from law attached to a sanctuary. That is using it as a noun.

Merriam-Webster also provides the meaning of sanctuary when used as an adjective: relating to or being a locality that provides limited cooperation to federal officials in the enforcement of immigration laws or policies, i.e., a sanctuary jurisdiction.

Call us crazy, but Connecticut, by its own law, provides “limited cooperation to federal officials in the enforcement of immigration laws or policies.” Connecticut is also a state. Hence, Connecticut is, by definition, a sanctuary state.

In a Facebook post, Ryan Fazio, a Republican vying to be that party’s nominee to run against Lamont, wrote on Facebook that Lamont and the Democrats are responsible for Liam Rivera’s death.

“Gomez was previously convicted of assault for breaking Liam’s arm, but was released to the public instead of being transferred to the Feds for deportation because of CT’s 2019 Sanctuary State law, passed by Gov. Lamont and legislative Democrats.

“Liam would likely be alive today if not for Gov. Lamont and CT Democrats’ Sanctuary law.”

It should be noted that when young Liam was killed, neither Lamont nor any Connecticut Democrats spoke out about his death that we were able to find. None.

Yet Lamont wasted no time bloviating about the death of anti-ICE agitator Renee Good in Minneapolis, shot and killed after she ran down an ICE agent. Lamont railed against the “horror and inhumanity” of the killing. Guess it’s only “horror and inhumanity” when it's someone attacking his political enemies who gets killed, not an innocent two-year-old boy. Doesn’t fit the Democrat narrative.

Raper was in car hit by pickup truck on U.S. Highway 90; two of victim's children killed in crash

SUWANNEE, FL, (November 25, 2025) - Carolyn Raper, 76, and two of her children, Sophia, 7, and Faithann, 5, were tragically killed in a car accident on Tuesday on U.S. Highway 90 in Suwannee County.

Incident Location
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident occurred at about 10 p.m., east of 87th Drive, when a pickup truck driven by a 33-year-old man veered into the eastbound lane. As a result, the pickup collided with Raper’s vehicle. The Florida Attorney General’s Office identified the driver of the pickup as Martin Lagunas Ramirez, an undocumented immigrant previously deported.

Per the AG’s Office, Ramirez was found with cocaine and may have been intoxicated. The accident remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
Every day, innocent victims such as Ms. Raper and her beloved daughters lose their lives in car crashes, often caused by another driver’s negligence.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was the primary cause of fatal crashes last year, followed by the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to stay in the proper lane; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving. Approximately 36,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year in this country.

While the cause and liability of the crash are being investigated, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said that it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney.

JERSEY CITY — A man charged with fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend along with her two children was in the U.S. illegally, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Napoleon Romero-Anduray, 31, faces three counts of first-degree murder after he broke into an apartment on Hutton Street just after midnight Thursday morning and stabbed Luisa Urbano and her two children ages 5 and 9, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

Romero-Anduray also trid to stab himself and was hospitalized, the prosecutor's office said.
A spokesperson from ICE's Newark office told New Jersey 101.5 they have lodged a detainer against Anduray-Romero, an alien from Honduras. The agency did not disclose how long he had been in the country.

"As part of ICE’s mission to identify and arrest removable aliens, ICE lodges immigration detainers against such aliens who have been arrested for criminal activity and taken into custody by state or local law enforcement," the spokesperson said in an email.

An immigration detainer is a request from ICE to state or local law enforcement agencies to notify ICE as early as possible before an individual is released from their custody. Detainers request that state or local law enforcement agencies maintain custody of the non-citizen for a period not to exceed 48 hours beyond the time the individual would otherwise be released, allowing ICE to assume custody for removal purposes in accordance with federal law.

Vigil to remember the victims
The stabbing is being investigated as a case of domestic violence, according to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop on his X account. Building superintendent Luis Turcos told the New York Post that the couple frequently argued and police had been called in the past.

A GoFundMe campaign was created by Urbano's aunt "to cover the funeral expenses and the repatriation of my niece and her two children." The campaign described Romero-Anduray as an ex-boyfriend.

Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez, D-Hudson, said on her Facebook page a vigil will take place at Pershing Field in Jersey City on Sunday at 4 p.m. to remember Luisa Urbano, her 9-year-old son, Juan Martin, and 5-year-old daughter, Diana Ramirez.

"Please join us in wearing purple, the color of domestic violence awareness. Your presence will not only honor Luisa, Juan Martin, and Diana, but also stand against this cycle of violence," Ramirez wrote.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - An arrest was made in connection to a homicide in Security-Widefield on Monday morning.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy found a stopped vehicle in the road near Crawford Avenue and Withington Drive. When the deputy investigated, they said they found an unconscious male in the passenger seat of the car.

The sheriff’s office said lifesaving efforts were performed on the unresponsive male, but he ultimately was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Wednesday, officials shared that the man who died had been identified as 24-year-old Miguel Ramirez Quiroz.

Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said they identified the suspect in this case as 29-year-old Miguel Angel Garcia Hernandez.

The sheriff’s office said Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed Hernandez was in the United States Illegally.

Hernandez is facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, felony menacing and false imprisonment.

Deputies said Hernandez is being held at the El Paso County Jail without bond.

 WASHINGTON – Mario Miguel Banegas Deras, 43, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today in Superior Court for the beating, stabbing, and strangulation death of Maria Magdalena Ayala Guardado in Northwest, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Banegas Deras pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed on April 15, 2025. Superior Court Judge J. Michael Ryan sentenced Banegas Deras to **24 years in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release.

“This illegal lowlife killed the mother of his children in the most heinous way, after abusing her throughout their relationship,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. “Domestic violence is something that we will not tolerate from anyone, particularly those who are not legal citizens of this country who break the law. According to the government’s evidence, at approximately 6:30 a.m. on December 15, 2024, 42-year-old Mario Miguel Banegas Deras, went to 744 Girard Street, NW, where he had lived with the victim, Maria Magdalena Ayala Guardado, and their 3 children until approximately one week before the murder, after Ms. Ayala told him to leave the home due to continued physical and emotional abuse.

On that day, Banegas Deras entered the apartment building and made his way to the lower level where he exited the building at the storage/garage area and attempted to open the garage door. When he couldn’t get in the garage, the defendant re-entered the building where he waited in hiding for the victim to make her way to the garage, as she did every day.

Ninety minutes later, Maria Magdalena Ayala Guardado exited the building, unlocked and then entered the garage. The defendant, who had been watching her through a small window, followed her into the garage and immediately closed the door. Once the defendant had Ms. Ayala trapped inside the garage, he killed the victim by strangling her, hitting her in the head over fourteen times with a brick, and stabbing her in the neck.

Thirty-five minutes after closing the garage door, Banegas Deras called 9-1-1 and reported that he’d just killed his wife by strangling her. The defendant was placed under arrest at the scene.

Shortly after the defendant’s arrest, the government obtained a Warrant of Removal/Deportation with the Department of Homeland Security U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Upon completion of his sentence, the defendant will be deported to his country of origin, Honduras.

Joining in the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Chief Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. They also acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorney, Marybeth Manfreda, who prosecuted the case.

On December 12, 2024, a wrong-way driver caused a crash that took the life of Metropolitan Police Department officer Colton Pulsipher, a 29-year-old husband and father of three. Officer Pulsipher was returning home from work when he was struck on Interstate 15 near mile marker 75 in Nevada.
