UNC the old Teacher's Education School, Massive suburban development along
Interstate 70 in the two most populous counties, Larimer and Weld. Mountain
Community of Estes Park
Percentage of Democrat, Republican, and Unaffiliated Voters: Republicans 40
% Democrats 30 %; Independent 30%, 600 Greens.

immigration reform is or would be? People should not be rewarded for
breaking the laws of the US
Have you been endorsed by or received contributions from any other
immigration reform or illegal immigration reductions groups at this time? No
Would you openly accept an endorsement and or contribution from ALIPAC? We
don't accept PAC contributions.

primarily from Mexico and Latin America where their own economies have been
twisted by NAFTA and other trade agreements of the so called "free" kind.
At least immigration with as much impact that it presents our own society
with difficulties. Because the numbers of immigrants has increased
dramatically we face assimilation problems and opportunities. We have
always been a multicultural country but required newcomers to learn English.
This was a burden on people who felt they were here first in the American
Southwest. I am mixed about how to deal with the problems intelligently.
If we don't enforce law then law becomes meaningless but the economic
pressures driving the immigration create such numbers that it is difficult
to enforce the laws. Agricultural workers have been a part of District 4
for a long time and few employers have asked many questions as the exploit
these workers and avoid union wages--benefits etc. These employers have
never been policed when they hire undocumented workers. Thus the jobs exist
and are filled not just in agriculture but in many parts of the service
economy. I have taught English in a volunteer setting (actually created
the program) for six years as a way of helping immigrants and second
generation in some cases gain the resources to function more effectively.
No questions asked. I am outraged that these people are exploited by their
employers. Their undocumented status makes it difficult for them to live
above board and to move into responsible participation in our society. Thus
they are often paid social security and other benefits to which they don't
have access. Structurally we have to work to insure that our trade
agreements stop degrading the economic life of the countries from which the
immigrants come. We have to find a way to allow these workers to be treated
fairly but their presence must not be allowed to undermine the efforts of
unions to organize and bargain for just wages for all in their industries.
Thus I favor real strong penalties for those who hire undocumented workers
combined with some method of documenting and regulating their participation
in society when they have established homes and property rights here in the
US. At the same time we must repeal the Taft Hartley Act and strengthen all
workers rights to organize. When jobs are justly paid they will usually be
filled by those in America and immigrants will not be so attracted to come
(when scab jobs are not available.) I am unfamiliar with the current
legislation except in general outline form. It sounds like an improvement
from the status quo but a much broader approach is needed.
