Short Answer
Has your campaign addressed the topic of illegal immigration in speeches, commercials, ads, or campaign materials? What are those messages? (Please provide sources or examples) Yes. Please view www.gpb.org/gptv/ Click Georgia Week Voters Guide and scroll down to the 8th district candidates. Choose the question regarding immigration to view my comments below. This interview was also aired on GPTV on September 17 and September 19.
The question asked was What legislation or policy do you support regarding immigration?
“First I’d like to acknowledge that many immigrants work hard, pay taxes, and are essential and productive contributors to our economy and our communities. I support a limited legalization program that allows some of the hard-working, tax-paying, law-abiding immigrants, regardless of their nationality, currently living and working in the U.S. to fairly and expeditiously adjust their status to become Legal Permanent Residents. Having said that, I also support taking the necessary step of enhancing intelligence to make sure that our ports and borders are safer. Tons of cargo coming into this country by air or ship goes un-inspected allowing an unprecedented number of illegal immigrants to come into this country undetected. This is not safe. We need to be more effective and thorough in our screening processes.
What do you feel your opponent’s stance on illegal immigration or immigration reform is or would be?
In the same interview my opponent was asked the same question and he answered:
“ Well, we’ve been a country of immigrants. We have welcomed people into this country legally. Our problem is the illegal immigration that is coming into this country so we’ve got to tighten up our borders. We’ve got to make sure we know who’s in this country, why they are here, and how long they are going to be here and have some way of identifying them. I don’t think that the President’s amnesty program as he introduced it would work. We need to look at some way of making sure local law enforcement can work together with INS and get these people back to their country of origin where they came from.
Have you been endorsed by or received contributions from any other immigration reform or illegal immigration reduction groups at this time? NO
Would you openly accept an endorsement and or contribution from ALIPAC? Yes
