CA alert: Oppose CA version of DREAM ACT
I got this CAPS ALERT in email:
Alert! Please ask your Assembly Member to oppose financial aid to illegal alien college students
While many of California's middle class families face financial difficulties during these economically uncertain times, the state Senate voted to give financial aid to foreign college students who are in the country illegally. SB 1301, a California version of the so-called DREAM Act, by Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) was recently passed by the state Senate and will now be considered by the state Assembly.
California State Universities and Community Colleges would be required to and the University of California requested to provide grants, scholarships, work-study offers, and loans to students who graduated from a California high school they had attended for at least three years--even if they have entered and remained in the U.S. illegally.
Ask your Assembly Member to oppose this legislation
While California's middle class families face financial difficulties during these economically uncertain times, the state Senate voted to give financial aid to foreign students who are in the country illegally. SB 1301, a California version of the so-called DREAM Act, by Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) passed by a 23-13 vote.
The bill requires the California State University system and the California Community Colleges and requests the University of California to provide grants, scholarships, work-study offers, and loans to students who graduated from a California high school and attended there for at least three years--even if they have entered and remained in the U.S. illegally.
Financial aid for illegals means less aid is available for Americans. Let your Assembly Member know of your outrage. The bill is now in the Assembly's Higher Education Committee.
Note: A similar measure, AB 2083, has passed the Assembly. We will be watching further developments and keep you posted. Previous similar bills, SB 1 in 2007 and SB 160 in 2006, were vetoed by the Governor.
ACTION NEEDED
Tell your Assembly Member to reject this slap in the face to American students who play by the rules. Send a fax or an e-mail by entering your ZIP Code and clicking "Go!" below.
