Many, many emails you are saying that Sen. Frist's phones (and other NEW amnesty supporters) are either not being answered or you are getting phone mail boxes that say they are full.

It sounds like Frist and his staff realize that they are in the process of creating incredible amounts of citizen hostility to the Senate Majority Leader and are just going to shield themselves from having to hear it.

In fact, I am hearing something similar for Martinez (R-FL) and other Republicans who have come out 100% behind this giant amnesty.



That means going to the offices themselves.

Those of you in the states of Tennessee, Florida and any other that nobody can get through their phones -- and if you live or work near those offices -- you have to do something the rest of cannot do today: You have to go to their offices this evening and tomorrow morning.

I know this is short notice. But I want you to know that if you can't reach by phone, then there is a way you can still make your opinion known.

You probably won't be able to get in but you need to take printed copies of Grade Cards or our Alerts or Profiles, whatever is easy, and tape them to the doors and windows of his offices.

Start calling every radio show you can in your state -- regardless of where you live -- and tell the hosts and producers what Frist and his co-horts are doing.

Make sure that Talk Radio mentions little else tonight and tomorrow.

Nothing talked about on these shows comes close to posing the danger to the American way of life than what the Senate is planning to pass tomorrow.

Frist and almost every other Senator is afraid of the word amnesty.

You must use it over and over and over again. And the minute you are challenged, you can provide explanations from my previous alerts and from our website.

An amnesty is allowing illegal aliens -- who came her to live and work -- the legal right to live and work here.

A "permanent amnesty" is letting the illegal aliens live and work here forever.

A "blanket amnesty" is allowing all illegal aliens to get the reward of legal residency (except certain conditions like criminal activity).

Frist, Martinez and Hagel (R-NE) are pushing a permanent amnesty.

What he pushes escapes being a blanket amnesty only because it won't apply to illegal aliens who arrived since Jan. 1, 2004. So, it is a Permanent Nearly Blanket amnesty.

What Bush fails to see at the border

Dear President Bush, Perhaps you know me from my work. I wrote and directed the movies "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals." Walking Civil War battlefields, soaking up the letters and diaries of that generation, re-creating the world of our ancestors -- all this has given me a deep appreciation for our country. My dad was with the Army Air Corps in North Africa while your dad was in the Pacific. My French mother was liberated in Tunisia and became a lawful immigrant to the United States. For an American, my story is unique and typical at the same time.

You probably don't need to be reminded of the hostility and animus directed your way by most of the Hollywood community. Then again, I'm sure you don't take it personally. After all, they held Ronald Reagan in equal contempt. As one of the very few directors of major motion pictures who sees you in a different light, I implore you to listen seriously to what I have to say.

What is happening on the southern border is unprecedented. Not only in our own history, but in the history of the world. No country at any time anywhere has sustained the influx of tens of millions of foreigners across its borders. A wave of anti-American leftism is sweeping Latin America. A socialist radical may soon be elected as the president of Mexico, a country which officially encourages its emigrants to vote in Mexican elections, urging them to think of themselves as Mexican first and perhaps only. The eventual outcome is plain for anyone with eyes to see. This is invasion masquerading as immigration.

It may already be too late to avoid a future annexation of the Southwest by Mexico or the evolution of a Mexican-dominated satellite state. This is not to say Mexican people are better or worse than any of God's children. It is to say that millions of ethnically and culturally homogeneous people will seek self-determination in a land they will increasingly feel justified in claiming as their own. Especially when the natural weight of demographic change is accompanied by the soundtrack of radical demagoguery which seeks to legitimize and moralize this phenomenon as a "reconquista." Many pundits claim you will be remembered in history as the president who won (or lost) the war in Iraq. I see it differently. I believe you will come to be seen, in the years and decades to come, as the President who saved (or lost) the Southwest of the United States.

Mr. President, this is a time for candor. Your immigration policy is viewed as captive to the cheap labor -- big business lobby and inimical to the survival of our country. It is splitting the party and draining away support for your presidency. We who understand the vital stakes will not be placated by rhetoric or slogans. The failure to recognize this growing and deep disaffection among Republicans, conservatives, independents and, indeed, many Reagan Democrats, is, in the short run, going to lead to a monumental defeat for your party at the polls in November.

The last two years of your presidency will be plagued with impeachment hearings, with pressures to diminish the war against terrorism, with the cutting off of funds for the war of liberation in Iraq for which so many of our brothers in uniform have paid the ultimate price. The American people will once again be forced to endure a painful repetition of the humiliating withdrawal from Vietnam. We will be dedicating yet another monument to brave men who gave their lives for honor, country and a lost cause.

I understand that in your heart you want to believe that the border should be an open place where goods and people can move freely back and forth for the good of all. I do not question your integrity or the goodness and decency of your motivations. Dear Mr. President, this is a utopian creed, which must be discarded before it is too late.

When I watched the Senate Judiciary Committee's one-day public session on immigration reform (I suppose we should be grateful that Sen. Arlen Specter devoted one whole day out of his busy schedule for the public discussion of a problem regarding 20 million illegal aliens) it was remarkable for the near absence of any senator speaking on behalf of the American people or their own constituents. It seems the overriding concern of most senators of both parties is for the illegal immigrant population. Perhaps these senators should be reminded that they are supposed to represent and defend American citizens, not foreign nationals, illegal aliens or indeed anyone else. Listening to the self-serving and pandering speeches, you'd think the senators were elected in Mexico or any other country on the globe except America.

Where was the concern for American schoolchildren forced to sit in overcrowded classes, for American patients forced to wait in overcrowded hospitals, for American workers whose wages are being undercut, for American drivers forced to sit in interminable traffic jams in over-whelmed freeway systems, for the victims of organized gangs, for the American college students who are turned away from publicly funded state universities, for many African Americans who are being literally displaced from their neighborhoods while being moved figuratively, once again, to the back of the bus, for those environmentalists and conservationists who want to protect open space and slow down urban sprawl, for the American taxpayers who have had to bear the burden of billions of dollars in increased welfare costs, over-burdened prisons, extra police and security and even, adding insult to injury, for bilingual education?

Where was the concern that we as a people are compelled to deal with these "in your face" issues which have been imposed upon us by external forces, instead of focusing our time, energies and capital on our own indigenous, urgent concerns, like for instance, the medical care for our own countrymen and women. Might it be irresponsible to mislead the 20 million illegal foreigners already here and might it be immoral to encourage the yearly arrival of millions more when we cannot even take care of our own millions of poor and sick and hungry and, yes, dare I say it, our unemployed?

Working as I do in Civil War history, I have had to explore the ugly depths of the American institution of slavery, and have been privileged to work alongside civil rights leaders and specialists in African-American history. For this reason it troubles me that we appear today to be importing a second virtual slave class of low-wage workers who are hired to replace or displace less-educated or privileged Americans -- including the very descendants of American slaves.

I agree with you that "no child should be left behind." But that is precisely what immigration advocates are doing to the children of America's working class -- by flooding the market with workers from a desperately poor country, who depress the wages of high school and even college graduates.

Little in the current situation resembles the immigration we knew and cherished while growing up in America prior to the '80s. The new and radically dislocating phenomenon we are enduring is not the old, familiar immigration of yesteryear -- gradual, orderly, assimilating and lawful. The numbers alone are unprecedented. The American people have been made the victims of monumental social engineering perpetuated upon them without their consent and against their will by an arrogant governing elite. Those who try to neutralize their justifiable instincts of self-preservation as a people and a sovereign nation by constantly invoking the mantra of "a nation of immigrants" are trying to pull the wool over their eyes.

The House immigration bill isn't perfect, but it is a firm and realistic place from which to build an effective policy for the survival of our country. The McCain-Kennedy bill looks like it was drafted by bureaucrats at the United Nations, not by representatives of the United States.

To do the right thing, to take the safe course for protecting our country, you will have to endure even more vilification from the left, you will have to watch large and increasingly violent rallies by those who don't want to abide by our laws or the will of the American people -- who think they are entitled -- who believe this country already belongs to them -- who believe the rest of us should just move aside, shut up and smile. To pretend this problem will go away by pandering to the illegal population, or to leave it for the next generation to solve is national suicide.

The moment has arrived. The Senate has already begun its bloviations and self-agrandizing platitudes, its morality play of good and evil wherein they the noble senators are cast as the redeemers of the entire world population seeking only to "live the American dream." We know by their coded words they will do nothing meaningful to really solve the problem or to defend America. If their actions of the past 20 years are a guide, they will only take the pose of pretending to do so. As a movie director I can see bad acting a mile away.

Today there are two Republican Parties. One is now seen correctly by most Americans as responsive first and foremost to the demands of multinational corporations, the agro-business and the Chamber of Commerce. The other, best represented by the embattled members of the House, represents grass-roots America -- we the people. In this debate you have the opportunity to make the party one and whole again, to regain its soul and return it to the service and the sovereignty of the American people.

Dear Mr. President, you must disenthrall yourself from the failed policies of the present. I implore you to rethink this issue and to change course. Millions of Americans, a great majority of your fellow citizens will be with you. Start speaking and doing the sensible, courageous and right thing. You will see your poll numbers turn dramatically around. You will save your country.

3. Thank them for "voting against cloture on the Judiciary Committee blanket amnesty, giving permanent residence to nearly all illegal aliens."

4. Tell them that you know that the Hagel/Martinez substitute is merely a blanket amnesty with some of the fringe trimmed off. That of 12-20 million illegal aliens, only those who arrived in the last two years would not be given a nearly automatic route to permanent residence and path to citizenship.

5. Tell them that the voters of your state will never be fooled that a vote for Hagel/Martinez is NOT a vote for amnesty. Tell them that you are disgusted with the the condescending performance of Senate Majority Leader Frist (R-TN) who went on TV and claimed he is pushing this bill through because it is NOT an amnesty. Does he think the American people are fools?

6. Every Senator who votes FOR cloture Friday on the Hagel/Martinez substitute will indeed be branded with a scarlet A for amnesty for the rest of their political lives. No matter how much those Senators may try to cover up their Scarlet Letter, millions of Americans will ensure that the public never ceases to see that A for Amnesty blinking like the beacons in the red-light district of any seedy part of town.

Senate Strikes Deal on Immigration

Republican and Democratic Senators on Thursday proclaimed cautious victory in their efforts to pass a bipartisan immigration reform measure, with hopes of moving legislation through the chamber by week’s end.

Senators had been deadlocked on the issue for days, holing up in leadership offices and holding meetings to try to come up with a deal around which most Members could rally. The gridlock appeared to break late Wednesday when Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) announced a compromise plan.

Sources indicated the Hagel-Martinez proposal, which divides illegal immigrants into three classes, would likely be offered as a motion to recommit on the floor as early as today. Senators would have the chance to offer amendments to the plan, and a vote on final passage could occur Friday or Saturday.

Under the Hagel-Martinez plan, those in the United States for two or fewer years would need to either leave or be deported; those here between two and five years would be required to register with the government and then over the next three years be admitted to the country legally as temporary workers (who never have to leave and can apply for citizenship); and those in the country for five years could enter the guest worker visa system (who can apply for citizenship).

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) called the deal “a huge breakthrough that will allow us to pivot in the next several hours and lead to a conclusion of passing a very important bill.”

Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said while he still has concerns — including that some Republicans will offer deal-breaking amendments — the Senate is moving forward. “I wouldn’t declare victory, but we’ve moved a long way down the road.”


4. PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE HAGEL/MARTINEZ AMNESTY



• The Hagel/Martinez Substitute contains all the provisions of the Specter Amendment – including the border security, interior security and employer enforcement provisions from the Frist bill – but makes the following 3 changes:

1. It proposes an alternative to Title VI, Subtitle A of the Specter substitute (which deals with the illegal population living in the U.S.)

2. It temporarily increases the number of employment based green cards from 290,000 (as in the Specter Substitute) to 450,000. This increase from 290,000 to 450,000 would sunset after ten years.

3. It would give mid-term illegal immigrants (defined below) priority in applying for green cards over future immigrants entering as temporary workers.

• The Hagel/Martinez Amendment is based on legislation (S.1919) introduced by Senator Hagel in October 2005.

Provisions for Long-Term Illegal Immigrants:

* The Hagel/Martinez Amendment provides an opportunity for illegal immigrants who have been in the U.S. more than 5 years to adjust to legal status without leaving the country.

• Any illegal immigrant seeking to adjust to legal status under this program must first meet all of the following 8 requirements:

1. Passed national security and criminal background checks
2. Resided in the U.S. for at least 5 years;
3. Worked a minimum of 3 years of the last 5 in the U.S.;
4. Paid all federal and state taxes;
5. Registered for Military Selective Service;
6. Demonstrated knowledge of English language and American civics requirements;
7. Paid a $2,000 fine, in addition to required application fees.
8. Work for an additional 6 years after enactment to ensure that their status is not adjusted before those who are already in line.

Provisions for Mid-Term Illegal Immigrants:

• The Hagel/Martinez Amendment also provides an opportunity for illegal immigrants who have been here less than 5 but more than 2 years to obtain a temporary work visa.
• These individuals would be subject to the visa requirements under current law (background checks, fees, paid taxes) and the requirements of the new temporary worker program created in the Specter substitute.
• Under the Amendment, these individuals would be required to exit the country.
• These immigrants would be fingerprinted and processed through the US-VISIT program at a land port of entry.
• Qualified individuals would be able to adjust to legal status over time and would be subject to the annual cap on green cards as increased in the Specter substitute. As noted above, they would be given priority in applying for green cards over future immigrants entering as temporary workers.

Provisions for Short-term Illegal Immigrants:

• The Hagel/Martinez Amendment would bestow no benefits on any illegal immigrant who arrived in the last 2 years.

• Those here less than two years would be required to return to home and only then could apply for a temporary worker visa once back in their home country.

• This is the same treatment as provided under the Specter Substitute amendment.

Line-jumping:

• Like the Specter substitute, the Hagel/Martinez Amendment requires illegal immigrants to go to the back of the line.

Key Differences between Hagel/Martinez and the Specter Substitute:

1. The Specter substitute allows almost all of the 11-12 million illegal who are here illegally to stay in the U.S. and adjust to legal status (green cards). The Specter substitute does not take into consideration how long these individuals have been in the U.S.

The Hagel/Martinez Amendment only allows the illegal who have been here more than 5 years to stay in the U.S. and adjust to legal status. Those who have been here less than 5 years but more than two years would be required to exit the country and return through the a land port of entry with a visa.

2. The Specter substitute provides a direct path to citizenship for every illegal immigrant living within our borders.

The Hagel/Martinez Amendment creates a separate path for illegal immigrants who have been here less than 5 but more than 2 years. These individuals would have to meet the requirements of the new temporary worker program first. Over time, qualified individuals would have the chance to become citizens. The annual cap for green cards as defined in the Specter bill would apply.


5. Senators who voted NO on the Judiciary Committee's blanket amnesty -- These are the ones to call



These at least were too scared of the blanket amnesty to be on record being for it.

Rumors are that 25 of these 60 Senators, though, really want an amnesty and are looking for a way to disguise it and pull the wool over the public's eyes. These 25 -- the names of which we don't have at this time -- will vote for the Hagel/Martinez Nearly-Blanket Amnesty if they think most of the public will buy their claims that it is NOT an amnesty.

This is Mission Impossible. If you choose to accept this assignment, start calling and don't let up until we tell you to stop.

Should you choose to decline this assignment, your country will self-destruct!

BLANKET AMNESTY LOSES 39-60.

YOUR PHONE CALLS & VISITS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TO BEAT THE HAGEL AMNESTY

First, thanks to all of you who participated in some way in making the blanket amnesty passed last week by the Senate Judiciary Committee appear far too radical and radioactive for the majority of Senators to support.

Without your activism, that blanket amnesty (primarily crafted by Ted Kennedy, D-MA, and John McCain, R-AZ) would almost surely have passed.

That page is being updated hourly (often several times an hour) during today's and tomorrow's amnesty voting.

My biggest thanks -- and the thanks of the nation -- to all of you who phoned and visited Senators' local offices this week. Most of you did that for the very first time. It took some courage, but you did what your nation needed.

Do not let the size of our victory on this first vote fool you. Up until this morning, reports were that the blanket amnesty had up to 55 votes. But only 39 Senators were willing this morning to subject themselves to their constituents' ire to vote for the amnesty this morning.


WHAT'S NEXT?


Essentially the vote that just occurred prevents the Specter Judiciary Committee blanket amnesty bill from being allowed to have a vote for final passage.

The next big vote -- which we think will be Friday morning -- will be a cloture vote to prevent a filibuster and allow a vote on the new Hagel/Martinez amnesty bill. (Read the 1st Alert I sent this morning that is included at the bottom of this email.)

Always look to our VOTE DAY page to make sure you are calling with the right information.

I will email you when there are major changes in plans and when something important new needs to be relayed.

PHONE CALLS TO DC AND LOCAL OFFICES NEEDED THIS VERY MINUTE

"Cloture" vote on the Specter Judiciary Committee amnesty bill is due at 10:30 a.m. EDT. They need 60 votes to prevent a filibuster and to go on for a vote on this amnesty (which is essentially the disastrous McCain/Kennedy bill). That vote would need only 51 votes if cloture passes.

You have been phoning, faxing and visiting Senators' office against the Judiciary Committee amnesty for weeks now. There still is hope that they can't get 60 votes for that. Democrats are the overwhelming majority of supporters for that amnesty.

BUT NOW SEN. HAGEL OF NEBRASKA AND SEN. MARTINEZ OF FLORIDA (both Republicans)have persuaded Majority Leader Frist (R-TN) to bring forth their amnesty "compromise" that they believe will get enough Republican votes to help the Democrats pass an amnesty.

IT IS THIS NEW HAGEL/MARTINEZ AMNESTY THAT YOU MUST OPPOSE TO YOUR REPUBLICAN SENATORS ALL MORNING!!!!!

When you call Democratic Senators (until you get my next Alert) pound them one last time that this is a blanket amnesty that makes illegal aliens wait for citizenship several years but which gives nearly all 12-20 million illegal aliens IMMEDIATE legal residency and the beginning of their permanent stay in the U.S. If they vote for cloture on the Specter Judiciary Committee bill, they will face voters the rest of their lives having to try to talk away why they are blanket amnesty supporters of illegal immigration.

2. When you call Republican Senators, you will want to stress the same points as in #1 but constantly refer to a vote FOR cloture as being a vote to help Ted Kennedy and the Democrats pass their "illegal alien mass amnesty citizenship bill."

But you will also want to tell them very briefly that you totally oppose the Hagel/Martinez Republican amnesty. You can say that it is nice that they take the amnesty away from maybe 40% of illegal aliens, but that there is no justification for giving a sweeping citizenship amnesty to 60% of illegal aliens and that they will be tarred just as much as a pro-illegal alien amnesty senator by voting for half-an-amnesty as for a whole amnesty.

Here's the plan, Senate schedule-wise.

The 10:30 vote will be on cloture on Specter/Judiciary substitute. It's expected to fail. (But we must make sure by a half-hour of a barrage of phone calls.)

There's no timing determined on succeeding cloture votes. The next would be on Hagel/Martinez "substitute." The leadership expects to have to work to get enough votes for cloture. WE MUST DEFEAT THIS.

If both Specter and Hagel cloture motions fail, the next cloture vote would come sometime later (again, undetermined and needing arm twisting) on Frist's bill (which has no amnesty but retains the doubling of permanent worker green cards from 1 million to 2 million a year -- the same as the Judiciary and the Hagel/Martinez amnesties).


OUR ROSEMARY JENKS -- WHO IS HEADING INTO A BLOCKBUSTER HOUSE HEARING AT THIS MOMENT -- JUST EMAILED THIS TO ME AFTER LOOKING OVER THE DETAILS OF THE HAGEL/MARTINEZ BILL:

"Just when you think it can't get any worse, along comes Chuck Hagel. This is probably the worst bill I've ever seen -- and there have been some real doozies lately. It combines all the bad stuff from the committee-passed Specter bill with even more bad stuff, including H-2Bs. Truly amazing!

We need folks to start calling about this right away. The Senators who are up for reelection must be made to understand that they will lose if this thing ever sees the light of day."
