    NumbersUSA FAX ALERT

From: info@numbersusa.com Add to Address Book
Date: 2006/05/10 Wed AM 08:46:32 EDT
Subject: Here's a new immigration fax to send

    Dear Faxer:

Ask your Rep. to tell Speaker Hastert they support the attrition solution of H.R. 4437

This new fax has been posted in your Action Buffet based on your answers to the Interest Survey.

You can find this fax by proceeding to
    www.numbersUSA.com

House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), House Judiciary Committee Chair F. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), and House Homeland Security Chair Peter King (R-NY), recently sent a letter to Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert bringing his attention to a new Zogby poll showing Americans' support the "attrition through enforcement" approach of H.R. 4437. (Text of the letter follows).

The poll indicates that there is significant support for the practical third way of dealing with the 12 million illegal aliens in our country - attrition. By stepping up interior enforcement efforts, such as workplace verification, many illegal aliens will begin to "self-deport" when they are unable to access jobs and other benefits.

As a reminder, just prior to Congress' Easter recess, the Senate failed to pass its immigration reform bill containing a massive amnesty-guestworker bill. Under consideration were three main proposals. One was passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and crafted by its chair, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA). The Specter proposal would reward illegal aliens with amnesty and add at least 31 million foreign workers and their dependents over the next decade. Another proposal, S. 2454, was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, MD (R-TN). S. 2454 would add 20 million foreign workers and their dependents over the next year. It would double the annual allotment of green cards. Finally, a proposal by Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Mel Martinez (R-FL) would produce a tiered amnesty and add at least 32 million foreign workers and their dependents over the next decade.

At this point, it is unclear whether or not one of these immigration bills will be brought to the Senate floor again, but Speaker Hastert will play a key role in the process of reconciling H.R. 4437 with whatever immigration proposal may come out of the Senate. That is why it is important your Representative contact Speaker Hastert and tell him he/she supports H.R. 4437.

Send this fax to your Republican Representative asking them to stand firmly in support of H.R. 4437 and to tell Speaker Hastert that the reform route he should pursue is the one outlined in the joint letter signed by Reps. Blunt, Sensenbrenner, and King.

    Text of the Letter
Americans Prefer House Immigration Bill 2-1 Over Senate Bill

    May 4, 2006

    Dear Republican Colleague:

A recent Zogby poll of likely voters shows that Americans believe current immigration levels are too high, and support legislation that would fortify the border, require businesses to verify the employment eligibility status of workers, and increase Department of Homeland Security cooperation with local law enforcement.

The poll shows that Americans support the reforms in the House-passed immigration reform legislation, H.R. 4437, over the Senate immigration bill:

    · When asked what the best way is to deal with illegal immigration, 64% supported the House bill's approach of enforcing immigration laws and encouraging illegal immigrants go home over time while only 30% supported the Senate bill, which would grant amnesty to 12 million illegal aliens and coupled with a doubling of legal immigration.

    · Eighty-seven percent of those describing themselves as "very conservative" prefer the House approach described above, with 72% of those who describe themselves as "conservative" supporting the House bill. Only 13% of those who are very conservative and 22% of those we are conservative support the Senate approach.

    · Seventy-three percent of Americans have little or no confidence in the ability of the government to screen out terrorists and criminals if there is a mass amnesty for the 12 million illegal aliens currently in the U.S.

The American people recognize that illegal immigration is a serious issue, and enforcement of our immigration laws must be our first priority. The American people support H.R. 4437.

    Sincerely,

    F. JAMES SENSENBRENNER, JR.
    PETER T. KING
    ROY BLUNT
