Thread: Oregon - ICE holds exceed 1200 at the State Penitentiary

For the first time in the history of the Oregon Department of Corrections the number of inmates with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holds exceeded 1,200 inmates last month. There are now 1,206 inmates in the State prison system who will be turned over to ICE for deportation once they have served their state prison terms.

The 1,206 criminal alien prisoners reported in the state system are in addition to those that are held in county, city and federal prisons in Oregon.

That represents a 25 % increase in just three years.

The incarceration cost to Oregon taxpayers for criminal alien prisoners in Oregon state prisons is over $34,237,000 per year.

Reviewing some of the crimes by number and type committed by those with ICE holds, they include 4 arsons, 167 assaults, 151 drug offenses, 160 homicides, 51 kidnappings, 168 rapes, 91 robberies, 179 sex abuses, and 71 sodomies.

While it is easy to calculate the cost to house illegal alien inmates it is impossible to calculate the cost to a family who has had someone murdered or raped or kidnapped by an illegal alien who should not have been in our country in the first place.

To give a perspective on the potential cost to taxpayers consider the case of Gustavo Mercado-Murillo. Murillo, an illegal alien inmate, was sentenced last year to 75 years at the Oregon State Prison for committing 8 felony sex offenses involving children under the age of 10. If Murillo were to live 40 years, (he is 31 years of age), it will cost Oregon taxpayers about $1.2 million for just his incarceration. Mr. Murillo is also on kidney dialysis at a cost of $6000 per week or $312,000 per year. Once again if he were to live 40 years, it will cost Oregon taxpayers an additional $12.5 million for his just his medical needs. He is one of 1,206 inmates presently in the Oregon State Penitentiary.

Former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis is quoted as saying:

“Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law breaker, it breeds contempt for the law, it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy."

On the issue of illegal immigration our own state government is a law breaker for aiding and abetting the ability of illegal aliens to remain in the state and commit crimes against its own citizens.
