Tancredo seeking Colorado ballot measure on immigration
Ballot proposal that would require businesses to check immigration status of newly hired workers

DENVER — Former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo has filed a ballot proposal that would require businesses to use a federal program to check the immigration status of all newly hired workers.

The proposal filed on Friday is aimed at the 2010 ballot.

Tancredo says high unemployment is enough to make people more sensitive to immigrants working here illegally.

The measure would order the Legislature to pass a law requiring that businesses do the checks.

The measure faces a legal review before Tancredo and supporters can begin collecting signatures get it placed on the ballot.
