$2.1 million heroin bust may be largest ever in Kane County

Claudia Chagoya was charged with one count each of controlled substance trafficking and unlawful possession with the intent to deliver; and two felony counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

A northwest suburban traffic stop Monday resulted in what is believed to be the largest seizure of heroin ever in Kane County, with more than seven kilograms of the drug, worth an estimated $2.1 million, found hidden in the vehicle.

The traffic stop was made by a Kane County Sheriff’s deputy at Route 25 and Luda Street in Elgin after a motorist failed to signal when required. The driver and sole occupant did not have a valid driver’s license, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

During the investigation, the deputy had reason to believe the driver was transporting illegal narcotics into the Chicago area, then located a hidden compartment in the vehicle, the release said.

Once deputies were able to access the compartment, more than seven kilograms of heroin was discovered. It is believed to have a street value of about $2.1 million, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Pat Perez called this a major seizure of heroin, saying the narcotics would have made their way to the suburbs and Kane County. The seizure, believed to be the largest ever in the county, will hopefully will choke off some of the area heroin supply, he said.

Claudia Chagoya, 41, of El Paso, Texas, was charged with one count each of controlled substance trafficking and unlawful possession with the intent to deliver; and two felony counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, the release said.

Chagoya, a Mexican citizen with a valid passport, was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday.

An El Paso woman may be behind what is believed to be one of the largest heroin seizures in the Chicago area, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Claudia Chagoya, 41, who is from Mexico but has an El Paso address, was arrested by Kane County sheriff's deputies during a traffic stop Monday in Elgin, a suburb northwest of Chicago.

Deputies allege Chagoya had $2.1 million in heroin, more than 7 kilograms, hidden in a vehicle she was driving. She faces charges of controlled substance trafficking, unlawful possession with the intent to deliver and two felony counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

A DEA spokeswoman in El Paso said there is no information that Chagoya is the focus of any local investigations.
