$585,000 in cocaine found in shipping container, officials say

Customs agents found more than a half-million dollars' worth of cocaine concealed in the panels of an empty refrigeration container, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced Friday.

Drug-sniffing dogs at the Los Angeles-Long Beach seaport complex smelled something Thursday inside the container, which came from El Salvador after stops in Guatemala and Mexico, officials said.

The dogs alerted officers to the front panel of the container. When they dismantled it, they found 20 brick-shaped packages wrapped in plastic inside. One was cut open and a white, powdery substance was found inside. It tested positive for cocaine, officials said.

Agents recovered a total of 64 pounds of cocaine from the container with a street value estimated at $585,000, officials said.
