DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Gives ‘Temporary’ 18-Month Amnesty to Yemen Nationals

Earlier this week, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas extended and re-designated the Temporary Protected Status for over 2,000 Yemeni nationals who can continue residing in the United States.

According to John Binder of Breitbart News, these nationals from Yemen originally received TPS in September 2015 from the Obama administration.

In a statement, Mayorkas revealed that he extended and redesignated TPS for Yemen due to “worsening humanitarian and economic conditions that prevent individuals from safely returning to their homes.” Binder expanded on what Mayorkas’ latest decision would do:

The decision will allow about 1,700 Yemen nationals currently enrolled in TPS to stay in the U.S., to retain their legal status through March 2023 and will add an additional nearly 500 Yemen nationals to the TPS rolls who have resided in the U.S. since July 2021.

Mayorkas revealed that Yemeni nationals who retain their TPS and those who are being incorporated to the TPS list are now able to apply for work permits in the US. In effect, they will now have the chance to displace American labor.

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) congratulated the Biden administration’s extension of TPS to Yemeni nationals. Binder observed that “the group was founded by the left-of-center U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops which advocates for open borders, more legal immigration, and amnesty for illegal aliens.”

He added that “CLINIC, according to the Catholic League, has previously been funded by billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundation.”

One point that Binder brought forth in his piece that should cause some alarm was how one of former President Donald Trump’s DHS secretaries, Kirstjen Nielsen, extended TPS for Yemeis in 2018. Around that time, there were approximately 1,250 Yemen nationals with TPS. That number has now expanded to over 2,000 as the nation on the Arabian peninsula continues under civil war conditions, starvation, and some of the worst cholera outbreaks in the world. Nielsen was viewed with great skepticism by America First nationalists during her time at DHS and for good reason.

Binder highlighted how Mayorkas has been on a roll granting TPS to all sorts of foreigners:

Most recently, Mayorkas renewed for 18 months TPS for more than 100,000 Haitians. In March, Mayorkas granted TPS to about 320,000 Venezuelans and 1,600 Burma nationals who can now remain in the U.S. for at least 18 months.

Binder pointed out an uncomfortable truth about TPS that most people don’t really understand:

While originally intended to be temporary, TPS has become a quasi-amnesty for otherwise illegal aliens created under the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990 (INA) that prevents the deportation of foreign nationals from countries that have suffered through famine, war, or natural disasters.

TPS effectively functions as a de facto amnesty program these days. Binder called attention to how the “Bush, Obama, Trump, and now Biden administrations have continuously renewed and expanded the program for a variety of countries.”

Legal immigration is overlooked by many right wingers. It’s one aspect of mass migration that presents a major threat to the US’s demographic and political stability because of the way migrants and their posterity vote.

We can forget about advancing libertarian values or any right-wing priorities if the country is swamped with millions of foreign nationals who hold beliefs that are alien to the American experience. America First nationalists must pressure Republicans to start cracking down on legal immigration.

We cannot let Democrats get a reliable voter pipeline via mass migration.
