Minuteman Project causes concern in Mexico

Later this week, the spotlight will be on Southeastern Arizona. Starting Friday, the month-long Minuteman Project will have volunteers, some armed, watching and waiting for illegal border crossers.

It's gaining international attention. Tuesday, Mexican officials met with the Mayor of Douglas to discus how they will handle potential violence.

Angela Castillo Lopez and her 10-year-old granddaughter live in Agua Prieta Sonora. They cross daily into Douglas to visit family and to buy groceries.

But with word of the Minuteman Project, Lopez says she won't be crossing after April 1st. She feels its too dangerous.

That concerns Agua Prieta Mayor David Figueroa and Douglas Mayor Ray Borane. They met privately to discuss the situations.

Mayor Borane showed fugueroa a flyer distributed over the weekend by a group calling themselves National Alliance.

Borane says, "I think they are concerned, maybe a little bit more, because its going to be dealing with their compatriots."

That's why the Agua Prieta Mayor called a meeting with 50 other local and national officials.

It was one of those officials who bought another flyer to distribute to Mexican citizens. It warns people about crossing the desert in April.

The flyer states, "vigilantes" will be patrolling 24 hours and might be armed.

Mayor Figueroa says his plan is to be cautions and to maintain a low profile. The last thing he want is to provoke violence.

David Morales, a spokesman for Agua Prieta says, "We understand it can become a volitale situation and we don't want to contribute to that in any form."

The Mexican military is on stand-by. One unit has about a thousand soldiers. They're located just across the border.

They're united with the Mayor of Agua Prieta and they're saying they're hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

Why? I checked the web and there is a Port of Entry in Douglas and assuming that this woman would be crossing legally what in the world is there for her to be afraid of? Besides that, the MM are not taking over the Border Patrol stations or the local Douglas police and I would doubt that they would even be patrolling in towns so why would things be any different for this woman next week than it is this week? It seems to me that somebody is either disseminating false information about the role and intent of the MMP or victims are already being created for propaganda purposes before the MMP even gets there.

    Kind of overreacting, aren't they?

The flyer states, "vigilantes" will be patrolling 24 hours and might be armed.
Isn't the Border Patrol patrolling 24 hours a day and might be armed? This reinforces the thought that with adequate staffing and being allowed to do their jobs, the Border Patrol could have gotten the illegal crossing situation under control years ago. The problem would appear to be in Washington.

Doesn't that imply and is in reality a threat from the Mexican government that the Mexican military may/will openly cross the border in mass and uninvited into a sovereign foreign country (ours) and take things into their own hands as they see fit? The Mexican government certainly doesn't think that the MM are going to cross into Mexico and attack Mexico on Mexican soil, do they? In more reasonable times that would be an act of war on the part of Mexico if they were to order/allow their military to cross the border with the intent of harming U.S. citizens and interfering with our sovereign rights. But, with our current president it would just be Mexicans shooting Americans that Americans don't want to shoot. I don't know about family values, Mr. President, but there are a lot of other things that should be stopping at the border that aren't. Mexican leaders have been saying for years that the nation of Mexico extends well beyond her borders and we continue to let the tail wag the dog -- we wouldn't want to be called a bad name. Actually, I doubt that anything much is going to happen because it is still in the best interest of Fox for nothing to happen, to let things quiet down a little, and then resume the Mexican strategy of taking U.S. jobs, city blocks, organizations, and politicians one by one. That has been working pretty well for them so far, why change now? The Mexican military on the border is probably just more arrogant posturing by Fox and friends.
