CDC chief on Ebola: We can’t shut the border

CDC chief on Ebola: We can’t shut the border

Friedan says the only way to 'get to zero risk is by stopping the outbreak' in Africa.

    Politico
By JONATHAN TOPAZ | 10/3/14 7:03 AM EDT

Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on Friday said restricting travel between the U.S. and West Africa would likely “backfire” and put Americans more at risk of contracting Ebola.

Appearing on MSNBC, Frieden was asked about potentially prohibiting air travel between the U.S. and West Africa, where the Ebola outbreak is most widespread. He said that such a restriction would likely be ineffective and would make it harder for health officials to root out the virus.

“The only way we’re going to get to zero risk is by stopping the outbreak at the source” in West Africa, Frieden said.

“Even if we tried to close the border, it wouldn’t work,” the top health official added. “People have a right to return. People transiting through could come in. And it would backfire, because by isolating these countries, it’ll make it harder to help them, it will spread more there and we’d be more likely to be exposed here.”

Frieden’s comments come as health officials continue to screen up to 100 people in Texas in connection with Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan, who is in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. Duncan flew to the U.S. on Sept. 19, but the CDC said that he was screened before his flight in Monrovia and showed no symptoms of Ebola. Health officials say his temperature was 97.3 degrees and that he was not contagious on the flight, meaning his fellow passengers were not at risk.

While in Liberia, Duncan had contact with a woman who had the virus and helped carry her from a taxi, according to The New York Times.

On Friday, Frieden said airport screenings are reducing risks. “There are a lot of checks in place. It’s not perfect,” he said.

In several interviews and at a Thursday news briefing, the CDC director has expressed confidence that health officials will be able to contain the spread of the virus in the U.S.

On Thursday evening, NBC announced that a freelance journalist working for the network in Liberia had contracted Ebola and quarantined himself on Wednesday.

This is such a horrible addition to the stream of deadly lies coming out of the Obama administration! All travel into America from pandemic ebola nations should have been restricted to emergency personnel only many weeks or months ago!

We can help these nations without allowing casual travelers like the Dallas ebola case guy that had not job and got a visa to come 'visit' his sister!

All inbound flights from Liberia and other infected nations with massive ebola outbreaks should be restricted to essential personelle only and there should be a CDC team screening all passengers before they even get off the plane!

But no! The Obama administration leaves our borders and entire nation wide open to illegal immigrants, terrorists, and deadly diseases because those traitors want to hurt America and Americans!

Wake up and smell the treason in DC America!

    W

PS: This picture shows how the Obama administration responds to an ebola patient vomiting all over a parking lot. They have a few Mexican immigrants with a freakin garden hose and not even a set of gloves or garden variety masks on!

    THE EBOLA PANIC

100 people may have been exposed to Texas Ebola patient

    John Roberts reports from Atlanta

O'Reilly on Ebola Threat: 'Obama Should Order an Immigration Quarantine'

    Fox News Insider‎ - 13 hours ago

Bill O’Reilly tonight outlined a plan for combatting the Ebola threat in the U.S., calling for an immigration quarantine and a temporary end to flights from West Africa.

“The Factor” host said that there is an epidemic of Ebola, and it will spread. He said that flights from West African nations to the U.S. should be discontinued until the epidemic subsides.
“President Obama should order an immigration quarantine,” O’Reilly added, stressing that West Africans should not be admitted into the U.S. until the Ebola outbreak is under control.

“In cases of life and death, you must err on the side of caution,” he said.
Alan Colmes and Andrea Tantaros joined O’Reilly to discuss his proposal.
Colmes called it “scare-mongering” and said that passengers who attempt to board planes in West Africa with a fever are not allowed on.

Officials Say Ebola-Infected Man Lied on Questionnaire Before Flying to U.S.

“You’re insane,” Tantaros told him. “We’re going to rely on the West African nations, who clearly cannot contain this virus.”
She added that we’re not equipped to deal with an Ebola outbreak and that one patient can shut down a hospital. She also noted that Obama said Ebola would not end up here, and yet it has.
What do you think of O’Reilly’s plan? Sound off in the comments below.

CDC Head on 'F&F': 'Sealing Off Borders' Will Not Work Against Ebola

    VIDEO AT SOURCE

    by Fox News Insider // Oct 03 2014 // 10:34am
As seen on Fox and Friends

CDC Director Tom Frieden pushed back this morning against those who argue that the United States should ban all flights from West Africa and not allow people into the country from places like Liberia.

Steve Doocy noted that the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S. lied on a questionnaire before leaving on a plane from Liberia to Brussels and then on to Washington D.C. and Dallas.

Frieden answered that the idea of sealing off the border or banning flights entirely will not work.

"I wish we could get to zero risk by sealing off the border. But we can’t. The only way we are going to get to zero risk in this country is by controlling it in Africa. Until that happens, Americans may come back with Ebola. Other people who have a right to return or a visa to enter may come back. People will go to third countries and come from there. Sealing them off – first off won’t work. Second off, it will backfire. Because if we can’t get help in there, then we’re not going to be able to stop the outbreak and ultimately we will end up at higher risk, not lower risk," said Frieden.

Brian Kilmeade argued "we're in trouble" if the CDC is relying on travelers to be truthful. Frieden expressed confidence in the CDC's temperature screenings in the affected West African countries.

"We are doing very good temperature screening. That is, where it is going to be the most efficient. That is where they have a few hundred people leaving. We're using approved devices, trained staff checking every person who is leaving each of the three countries to see if they have a fever. [If you] screen people here, instead of a few hundred it would be a few hundred thousand, it would be inaccurate. And this is the way that we think we're going to be most effective at keeping people who are having a fever from getting on planes," he said.

Frieden says he realizes how "scary" the disease is for Americans, but assured people that the CDC is "stopping it in its tracks" in Texas by identifying each person who had contact with the patient and making sure they do not spread it to others.

What an idiot, no people do not have a right to return and make people sick, we block certain fruit/food from coming in but we're helpless to halt people with diseases, bull. This is simply the open border crowd who appear excited about bringing harm to America.
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.
