U.S. Department of Homeland Security personnel and partner agencies arrested 57 people and seized $3 million worth of marijuana in seven different maritime smuggling incidents since Friday.
The seven incidents, detailed by DHS officials on Tuesday, were:
- 5 p.m. Friday –A suspicious 28-foot sailboat was spotted heading north across the maritime boundary line. A Coast Guard vessel responded and found 12 Mexican migrants, who were turned over to the Border Patrol.
- 11 a.m. Saturday — A suspicious vessel was spotted off Coronado and later docked at the ferry landing. Border Patrol agents were dispatched and arrested 13 people, two of whom were U.S. citizens charged with human smuggling.
- 1:45 p.m. Saturday — A patrol encountered a 20-foot cuddy-cabin vessel approximately three nautical miles off Oceanside. The boat was visibly overloaded, and agents found 12 Mexican migrants on board.
- 2 p.m. Saturday — Agents received a report of an abandoned boat near Point Loma. They found 779 pounds of marijuana aboard with a street value of $3.1 million.
- 4 p.m. Saturday — A Coast Guard cutter began chasing a vessel of interest 12 nautical miles off Torrey Pines State Park. A second Coast Guard unit stopped the 29-foot, cuddy-cabin vessel and found 18 Mexicans, one Guatemalan, and one El Salvadorian aboard.
- 8:25 a.m. Monday — A small boat arrived at the dingy dock near Hawthorne Street and Harbor Drive in downtown San Diego. Ten unidentified people left the boat and entered a waiting vehicle, but agents were unable to stop them.
- 10 a.m. Monday — Park rangers found an abandoned pleasure craft at Torrey Pines State Beach. Seven life jackets were found aboard the vessel.
Seven of the 57 people arrested were identified as suspected smugglers and face associated charges.

SAN DIEGO — Federal authorities found nearly 780 pounds of marijuana worth more than $3.1 million abandoned in a boat that washed up against the cliffs in Point Loma on Saturday afternoon, Customs and Border Protection officials said Tuesday.
The discovery of the abandoned cannabis was part of a four-day stretch between Friday and Monday in which Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection agents detained 57 people in connection with four suspected human smuggling incidents in the waters off San Diego County.

The drug boat was reported abandoned about 2 p.m. Saturday along the bluffs in Point Loma, Customs and Border Protection officials said.
Aboard the boat, agents found 14 bundles of marijuana weighing 779 pounds, with an estimated street value of more than $3,116,000.
No other information about the drugs or the boat was released.
A day earlier, around 5 p.m. Friday, a federal agent spotted a 28-foot sailboat heading north from Mexican waters into U.S. territorial waters, officials said. Authorities ultimately found 12 Mexican citizens aboard the sailing vessel, determining two of them were smuggling the others.
Agents took all 12 into custody.
Around 11 a.m. Saturday morning, Border Patrol agents arrested 13 people on smuggling-related charges after a pleasure boat pulled up at the Coronado Ferry Landing dock, officials said. Agents waiting onshore took the passengers into custody as they were trying to escape in vehicles.
One of the 13 was a woman, one was a child and two were U.S. citizens, Border Patrol authorities said. It was unclear how many were suspected of being smugglers.
Also on Saturday, a law enforcement patrol boat came upon an overloaded 20-foot vessel with a small cabin about three miles off the coast of Oceanside that was “clearly violating a number of safety regulations,” Customs and Border Protection officials said in a statement. Agents took 12 people from the boat into custody.
Border Patrol agents later determined all of the boat’s occupants were Mexican citizens, including the two people suspected of smuggling the others, authorities said.
About 4 p.m. Saturday — in what officials said was the third suspected human-smuggling incident of the day — a Coast Guard cutter attempted to stop a 29-foot vessel with a small cabin that refused to slow down about 12 miles off the coast of Torrey Pines State Beach, officials said. The Coast Guard crew requested help, and a crew aboard a second Coast Guard vessel was able to stop and board the fleeing boat, which was carrying 20 people.
Border Patrol agents later determined that two of the 20 were suspected of smuggling the others, officials said. Both of the suspected smugglers and 16 of the others were Mexican citizens, while one was Guatemalan and the other was from El Salvador.
On Monday morning, authorities discovered two boats along the coast suspected of having been involved in human smuggling. One was discovered near downtown San Diego, where 10 unidentified people were allegedly spotted getting off a small boat and piling into a vehicle that sped away.
The boat that dropped the people on shore also sped away. Agents were unable to find anyone involved in the incident, which officials said they confirmed was a smuggling event.
Authorities also found an abandoned pleasure craft Monday morning at Torrey Pines State Beach with seven life jackets on board. Nobody associated with the boat was found.
