    13 SB 1070 protesters CONVICTED

    10 SB 1070 protesters convicted; 5 await judge's ruling

More than a year after 15 people protesting Senate Bill 1070 were arrested, a judge has found 10 guilty of misdemeanor charges and is expected to rule on the other five later this week.

Justice of the Peace Pro Tem David V. Seyer issued written rulings late Monday on the 10 convicted defendants, who were protesting at Fourth Avenue Jail on July 29, 2010, the day the law went into effect.

They were involved in a so-called "daisy chain" and "human chain," where they linked themselves together during the protest.

The prosecution said they refused to move after multiple officers using bullhorns ordered them to disperse. The defense argued that the prosecution didn't unequivocally prove the protesters understood what the officers were saying.

The protesters face up to four months in jail, a $75 fine and two years' probation. A sentencing hearing is set for Aug. 23.

Attorney Antonio Bustamante, who represented half of the defendants in two separate trials, said they will appeal the rulings and are "very optimistic."

Bustamante also is involved in a third trial for the five other protesters, including Salvador Reza, leader of a Phoenix immigrant-rights group. That case wrapped up Monday and a decision is expected this week.

Bustamante said the judge's decision in the previous cases doesn't bode well for acquittal in the third trial since all 15 defendants faced similar charges.

Although SB 1070 went into effect last year, a judge put the most contentious parts of it on hold, and the case could head to the Supreme Court.

3 found guilty on charges stemming from AZ protest

    By The Associated Press

A judge has found three immigrant rights advocates guilty of failing to follow police orders during a protest last year over Arizona's controversial immigration law and a crackdown.

The verdicts reached Thursday bring the number of immigrant advocates convicted of the same misdemeanor charge to 13.

All could face up to four months in jail and a maximum $700 fine when they are sentenced Aug. 23 by Justice of the Peace David Seyer.

The latest verdicts were handed down against immigrant-rights group leader Salvador Reza and the Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Boston-based Unitarian Universalist Association.

Another advocate was convicted of the same charge in the verdicts announced Friday. Two others were acquitted.

The advocates were arrested July 29, 2010, when dozens of protesters took to Phoenix streets on the day Arizona's new immigration law was set to take effect.

The protesters also were speaking out against Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio, who organized an immigration patrol the day the law took effect.

The protesters massed outside one of Arpaio's jails, beating on a metal door and forcing sheriff's deputies to call for backup. Officers in riot gear opened the doors, waded into the crowd and hauled off those who didn't move.
