COMPTON, Calif. — The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says a plea for help tossed from a barred window led deputies to detain 16 suspected illegal immigrants and make one arrest in Compton.
A sheriff's statement says deputies went to a home Monday afternoon on a report that someone had tossed a child a note in Spanish. It said people inside were being held against their will.
Arriving deputies saw many people fleeing the home and couldn't stop them but they did detain 14 men and women and two boys, who were turned over to immigration officials.
The Sheriff's Department says a deputy killed a pit bull who advanced on him at the home, and deputies later arrested a fleeing man who bit a deputy's leg during a struggle.
