    The Arizona Republic .

Fifteen to 20 people scattered into the desert after a Department of Public Safety officer pulled over a suspicious vehicle on Interstate 10 early Thursday morning, authorities said.

The officer made the traffic stop about 4:50 a.m. on the westbound I-10 near Wild Horse Pass, DPS spokesman Lt. James Warriner said. When the vehicle stopped about 20 people scattered.

Fifteen people had been detained as of 8:30 a.m. and were turned over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Warriner said.

Traffic on Interstate 10 slowed to a crawl Thursday morning as police scrambled to take into custody 15 suspected illegal immigrants after a routine traffic stop.

According to Department of Public Safety officer Hawkins, it all began around 4:48 a.m. near Wild Horse Pass on the Gila River Indian Community. When the westbound vehicle was pulled over the passengers ran off into the desert.

Hawkins, the DPS duty officer, said that no one was injured, but that officers suspected that there are still a few suspects unaccounted for.

Investigators with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were called out to the scene.

It's not the first time large-scale arrests of illegal immigrants have taken place around Ahwatukee Foothills.

    Other major occurrences include:

February 2009: 19 illegal immigrants and two smugglers were taken into custody at Interstate-10 and Ray Road.

January 2008: 11 illegal immigrants taken into custody at I-10 and Elliot Road.

February 2008: 18 illegal immigrants taken into custody at I-10 and Ray Road.

July 2007: Drop house in Ahwatukee Foothills with 19 illegal immigrants.

February 2007: Five illegal immigrants kidnapped at gunpoint by smugglers at 50th Street and Ray Road.

November 2003: A shootout between rival smuggling operations that began near Casa Grande ended at I-10 and Elliot Road with four dead and three wounded.

Twenty-three people suspected of being illegal immigrants were detained Thursday morning after a suspicious vehicle was stopped on Interstate 10, police said.

A Department of Public Safety officer pulled over the suspicious vehicle on westbound I-10 near Wild Horse Pass Boulevard around 4:50 a.m., DPS spokesman Lt. James Warriner said.

Once the vehicle stopped, the 20 people inside scattered into the desert.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents responded to detain the twenty suspects and transported them to a central Phoenix facility, ICE spokesman Vincent Picard said.

DPS officers later found three others wandering near the original stop location and transported them to the Phoenix location.

As of Thursday afternoon, the suspects were still being interviewed and no smugglers had been identified, Picard said.
