Nineteen alleged MS-13 gang members have been indicted on federal racketeering charges in connection with 10 murders and attempted murders in Prince George's and Montgomery counties, the Maryland U.S. attorney's office announced this morning.

The indictment comes at a time of heightened concern about Mara Salvatrucha, known as MS-13, the Latino street gang police say is responsible for stabbing six teens at a Montgomery high school and mall earlier this month.

Eight of the crimes cited in the indictment made public today were in Prince George's County. They include the stabbing death of alleged gang member Randy Calderon in Mount Rainier in 2003, and the fatal beating of Ashley Antonio Urias at Washington National Cemetery in Suitland in 2004. Prosecutors also blame the gang for the stabbing death of Eliuth Madrigal in Silver Spring in 2003.

The most recent crimes cited are two attempted murders last month, in Silver Spring and Langley Park.

According to the indictment, the gang is organized into "cliques" such as the Sailors Locos Salvatruchos Westside, the Teclas Locos Salvatruchos, and the Langley Park Salvatruchos. "Leaders of cliques of MS-13 from across the United States would meet to discuss gang rules and gang business and to unite members from across the country,'' the indictment says.

Prosecutors are expected to reveal more information about the case this afternoon.
