Illegal immigration supporting bills in California

Immigration reform fight heats up in California
    Not everyone wants more access

    by Mike Luery Bio

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —The debate over immigration reform is heating up in California, where scores of immigrants, many of whom are undocumented, rallied Monday at the state Capitol, demanding more rights.

The rally, comprised of students and workers, showed support for more than a dozen bills. One measure would make it tougher to deport illegal immigrants.

It's something New Katthivongskorn supports. He went to Inderkum High School in Sacramento and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley.

When robbers held him up at gunpoint, he was scared to call the police.

"And I knew that any contact with the police, whether it's for something very minor -- for a traffic (ticket), something like that, could lead to complications with immigration," Katthivongskorn told KCRA 3.

Another bill would provide more overtime pay, meal and rest breaks to domestic workers such as Neira Ortega, who cleans houses for a living in Oakland.

She is also undocumented, and told KCRA 3, "I don't drive because I have fears, you know. I don't have a license and I have fear because I have two kids and I have to support them."

But not everyone wants more access for immigrants.

Opposition exists from groups such as We The People, California's Crusader.

KCRA 3 spoke with the group's leader, Raymond Herrera, in Southern California by phone.

"Illegal aliens have been granted impunity by the federal government, the state government, the county government and municipalities throughout the United States, contrary to the rule of law, the American treaty and our way of life," Herrera said.

California lawmakers are considering 18 bills that would expand immigration rights and opportunities, ranging from driver's licenses to health care access.
