Gutierrez riled up by federal raids
    Undocumented Bridgeport workers dodge deportation

By ERIN ZALESKI, Medill News Service

    Wednesday, August 02, 2006

Fifteen undocumented workers at a Bridgeport pallet manufacturer, arrested in a federal raid by in April, gained a temporary reprieve July 31, when immigration judge Carlos Cuevas granted the workers a one-year stay of deportation. Twenty-six workers were arrested at IFCO Systems, 2000 W. 32nd St., on April 19, as part of a nationwide sweep on the company by the federal Immigration and Custom Enforcement. Of the original 26 workers arrested, 15 faced deportation hearings this week.

Immigrant advocacy groups applauded Monday's ruling.

"This was definitely a victory," said Emma Lozano, president of the Pilsen-based immigrant rights group Centro Sin Fronteras, who organized an overnight vigil July 30 in support of the workers. "They don't have to be back in court until July 2007, and we could have legalization by then."

Nevertheless, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Chicago) had harsh words Tuesday for both immigration authorities and the Bush administration after a closed meeting between a delegation of elected officials and representatives of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Chicago bureau.

"The president said that he believes the 11 million undocumented workers should be given an opportunity to legalize," said Gutierrez, addressing a gathering of immigrant rights demonstrators outside the ICE offices at 10 W. Jackson Blvd. "The same president has given instructions to increase raids to employment sites, thus increasing deportations of the very people he said deserve an opportunity."

Gutierrez, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston), and other officials sought the meeting with ICE representatives, including Deborah Achim, who heads the bureau's Office of Detention and Removal Operations, to discuss a proposed moratorium on the deportations of illegal residents until immigration legislation is finalized.

"I was rebuked and told that they were only taking orders," Gutierrez said after the meeting. "I have never seen such arrogance, hostility, and anger on the part of any government official."

"[ICE officials] forget who they are working for-they have the impression they are working for the president, but American taxpayers are paying their salaries," he added.

Gail Montenegro, spokeswoman for Immigration and Custom Enforcement, did not comment on the specifics of Tuesday's meeting.

"We discussed our immigration and enforcement initiatives," she said. "In the meantime, we will continue to enforce the immigration laws of the U.S."

During Tuesday's meeting, Lozano led about 20 demonstrators in a rally outside ICE offices. In the blistering heat, demonstrators chanted, "Moratoria si, deportaciones, no!" while holding pictures of family members and signs calling for speedy legalization.

    Gutierrez vowed to keep fighting.

"If they [ICE] are taking orders from [U.S. Homeland Security Secretary] Michael Chertoff, then we should engage Mr. Chertoff in a discussion," he said.

"We need to role up our sleeves and get this bill passed."

In May, the Senate passed an immigration bill that, in addition to securing U.S. borders, could provide an opportunity for undocumented residents to gain legal status. The legislation has been the subject of nationwide hearings this summer, as Congress struggles to come to an agreement on immigration reform.

Gutierrez and immigrant advocacy groups have said that until Congress ends its stalemate, it is unjust to deport undocumented workers.

Exactly, they are working for the American taxpayers for once, and the law abiding American taxpayers overwhelmingly want something done about illegal aliens and overwhelmingly oppose amnesty for these criminals.

Well no surprise here since these illegals are putting food on their tables.

Yes they do work for the american citizen taxpayers which are the majority in this country and legally entitled to have our laws enforced. Illegal aliens have no rights and should be deported. That judge that gave a stay of a year to those illegal aliens should be thrown off the bench for blatantly refusing to enforce our laws.

How convenient that the judge just happened to be hispanic. The fix was on from the beginning in this case. We need to hammer ICE and make sure they appeal this decision.

I noticed that too. Nothing like a little racial sympathy to undermine our laws. And they have the nerve to call us racist!

A quick Google search finds that this particular judge denies asylum in less than half the cases presented to him.

Of course, 3 New York immigration judges deny asylum less than 10% of the time.

    What's wrong with this picture?

First of all......I THOUGHT the president said that he was against amnesty. Okay, so why are you surprised. Secondly, he's ordering increased raids because this is being demanded of him by the American people. If I'm not mistaken it IS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE who should be placing the demands on the president of their country. who ARE you representing, Mister Guiterrez Take a hike. Move to Mexico and fight for the rights of the people of that country instead of fighting AGAINST the rights of the people of our country.
