SAN LUIS, Ariz. — Three people have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle nearly 17 pounds of methamphetamine across the Mexico border into southern Arizona, federal officials say.

The 22-year-old driver of a car and his two passengers were sent to a secondary inspection of their sedan Wednesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Luis Port.

Officers used a non-intrusive X-ray scan on the vehicle and located 19 packages of methamphetamine.

The meth had an estimated value of about $260,000, authorities say.

The vehicle and drugs were processed for seizure. All three people were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. Their names weren’t released, but authorities say the driver was from Mexico.
