Border Patrol chief: 250K migrants from 90 countries apprehended in Texas

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — Along the Southwest border, including in El Paso, Texas, migrants from Central America are seeking asylum in droves.

Migrants from Central America are from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, but there are migrants coming from many other countries, too, according to Chief Aaron Hull, with the Border Patrol's El Paso sector.

He said in fiscal year 2018, 250,000 migrants from 90 countries were apprehended in Texas.

He believes there could be threats to American’s safety among these large groups seeking asylum.

“The resource draw is huge, and it pulls resources away from our primary focus on trying to secure the border on the ports of entry,” said Hull.

In 2018, one person from Afghanistan, two people from Iran, two people from Iraq, seven from Pakistan, one from Saudi Arabia, three from Syria, five from Russia and 733 people from China were apprehended by Border Patrol agents in Texas, some crossing in El Paso.

“In the middle of this influx of family unit aliens, unaccompanied aliens that are potentially of special interest to us,” said Hull.

People from Australia, Latvia, Ukraine and Italy were also among the people who were apprehended in Texas while trying to enter the U.S. illegally, said Hull.
