28 illegal immigrants arrested in sweep
April 29, 2006 - Authorities say 28 illegal immigrants have been arrested in Illinois as part of a Midwest sweep.

The officials said yesterday that the illegal immigrants failed to comply with deportation orders.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement periodically conducts sweeps of fugitives who've been ordered to leave the country. In this month's operation, the agency arrested 125 immigrants in seven states.

Agency spokesman Tim Counts says immigrants arrested in Illinois were from the Congo, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Jordan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland and Ukraine.

He says 12 people in the group had criminal convictions.
