3,000 more troops patrol drug-war ravaged streets of Juarez

As evidence of how bad things have gotten in Juarez, Mexico, some 3,000 additional Mexican army soldiers arrived by convoy and have been deployed to battle drug cartel violence on the city's streets, the El Paso Times reports. The newspaper printed a photograph of soldiers disembarking their vehicles as if they were in a war zone.

The influx of new soldiers is in addition to the 2,000 soldiers who already were patrolling the city.

More than 1,600 people were murdered in Juarez last year, most of them as a result of the drug gang war. Juarez, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, has recorded more than 300 murders already this year.

Within two weeks, officials expect there to be a total of about 8,000 soldiers battling drug violence in Juarez.
