NOGALES, Ariz. - Federal authorities say they've broken up a marijuana smuggling operation along the Arizona-Mexico border and arrested eight drug-smuggling suspects.
Agents from a multi-agency task force led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration say "Operation Family Tree" also resulted in the seizure of more than 5,000 pounds of marijuana during the course of the investigation.
Authorities say three other suspects named in a federal indictment Thursday have warrants for their arrest and remain fugitives. The nationalities of the suspects were not immediately available Friday.
The eight suspects in custody were arrested in and around Nogales. Authorities say the eight been indicted on 13 drug-trafficking counts including conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana.
