BRUSSELS — Germany, France and Spain are warning the European Union not to meddle in the management of their borders, insisting that's a security issue that touches the core of national sovereignty.

The EU Commission is expected to present plans Friday to better manage the Schengen zone of borderless travel through much of Europe, and the three nations fear it would try to shoehorn its way into making decisions on border issues.

The three nations say in a joint statement Tuesday that "respecting the core area of national sovereignty is very important to the member states."

The Commission says its proposal would allow it to help member states remedy border problems with financial and technical assistance.
