Authorities are investigating after witnesses said a group of boaters came ashore on a makeshift vessel at Sunny Isles Beach Wednesday morning.

Sunny Isles Beach Police said the vessel reportedly arrived just before sunrise on the beach south of the pier at 162nd Street and Collins Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the vessel, but no boaters, officials said.

Witnesses told NBC 6 that several people were on the vessel when it reached the shore, and they took off running.

"Not everyday you see this, people coming here. That's an experience," witness Jhon Martinez said.

Police said they handed the investigation over to U.S. Border Patrol. Border Patrol officials said it's believed five people were on the vessel.

The origin of the vessel was unknown, officials said.
