A sheriff's spokeswoman says an assailant has shot two sheriff's deputies in Northern California after shooting an officer and a bystander in a neighboring county.

Placer County sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin tells The Associated Press that two of her department's deputies were shot by the same assailant who is suspected of shooting a deputy in Sacramento County earlier Friday.

She says a woman who was a passenger in the vehicle with the assailant has been taken into custody.

Sacramento County spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman says the suspect earlier shot a civilian when that person refused to give up the keys to a vehicle.

Bowman said the first deputy was approaching a suspicious occupied vehicle in a parking lot when he was shot.

The condition of the deputies was not immediately known.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

An assailant shot a Sacramento County, California, sheriff's deputy and a bystander, then carjacked two vehicles Friday morning, prompting a manhunt as the assailant fled through residential areas, sheriff's spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said.

Bowman said the deputy was approaching a suspicious occupied vehicle in a parking lot when he was shot.

"The person who was inside of the vehicle shot rounds at the officer," she said. She later said that "at least one shot was fired at our deputy, striking him at least one time."

She could not say if the deputy shot back. He was taken to a hospital but Bowman said his condition was not immediately known.

"We're hoping for the best," she said about two hours after the initial shooting.

A second person was then shot when they refused to give up the keys to a vehicle during an attempted carjacking, Bowman said.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. in the commercial Arden Way area of Sacramento near a Motel 6. It prompted a massive response by special weapons teams and other heavily armed law enforcement officers from several agencies.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 30s and Bowman said he was accompanied by a woman. She said he fled to a residential area where he carjacked a vehicle, then later carjacked a second vehicle.

A park ranger reported he saw the suspect and woman changing their clothing in the Carmichael area, a few miles northeast of the site of the initial shooting. Bowman says it is unclear if the woman is a suspect or hostage.

Authorities were seeking a red 2002 Ford F150 extended cab pickup truck with an ice chest in the back.

CHP: Woman sought in shootings of deputies in custody

1 Sacramento County, 2 Placer County deputies shot

    UPDATED 2:48 PM PDT Oct 24, 2014

A search continues in the south Auburn area for the man also wanted in the shootings, according to David Martinez of the CHP.

Placer High School students are being evacuated to the Boys and Girls Club at 679 Lincoln Way because of the ongoing search, Auburn police said.

All schools in Auburn have been placed on lockdown, the school district said.

Authorities are asking people to stay away from the area. Several streets in Auburn are closed.

The woman was taken into custody after the red 2002 Ford F-150 truck, which was carjacked by the suspects in Carmichael and driven up to Auburn, was recovered, authorities said.

The Placer County Sheriff's Department confirmed on Twitter that two of their deputies had been shot during the search.

Both deputies were taken to Sutter Roseville Medial Condition. Their conditions are unknown.

The situation began at 10:30 a.m. Friday when a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy was shot outside a Motel 6 on Arden Way.

The deputy was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition is not yet known.

Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones will be holding a news conference at 3 p.m. to provide an update on the deputy's condition.

Sgt. Lisa Bowman, of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, said after the shooting the gunman and a woman attempted to carjack a vehicle near Spanos Court in Sacramento County.

A person was shot when they refused to give up their keys during the carjacking attempt, deputies said.

A Mustang was then carjacked in the Carmichael area before the Ford F-150 truck was carjacked.

The man involved in the carjackings was described as a Hispanic man in his 30s. He was last seen wearing a blue and black checkered shirt.

The owner of the Ford F-150 said that the gunman approached him requesting his truck, helped him unhitch a trailer and then sped away with the truck.

Bowman said the Sacramento County deputy was approaching a suspicious occupied vehicle in a parking lot on Arden Way when he was shot.

Witnesses told KCRA 3 that they heard multiple shots fired and that a white vehicle sped away from the scene after the shooting.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is asking witnesses to call 916-874-9022 if they have any information about the Arden Way shooting.

California State Park officers inspect a car on Maidu Dr. and Auburn Folsom Rd. in Auburn, Calif., in the hunt for a suspect who shot of three officers, one with the Sacramento County Sheriffs department and two Placer County Sheriffs department on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014.HECTOR AMEZCUA/HAMEZCUA@SACBEE.COM

A day of carnage by a suspect armed with a rifle left two area deputies dead, a motorist gravely injured and another deputy wounded in a 30-mile crime spree that triggered a massive manhunt by hundreds of law enforcement officers.

Just before 4 p.m., officials announced the arrest of Marcelo Marquez, 34, who had been hiding in an Auburn home for hours.

In a somber press conference Friday afternoon, Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones confirmed that Deputy Danny Oliver, a 47-year-old father of two daughters and 15-year veteran of the department, was killed by a shot to the head Friday morning in the parking lot of the Motel 6 at Arden and Ethan Way in Sacramento.

That shooting was followed by a series of carjackings and shootings that paralyzed the region from Sacramento to Carmichael to Auburn, where authorities cornered the unidentified suspect inside a home on Belmont Drive.

The events of the day, which Jones called a “perfect storm” of attacks by a suspect whose motive remains unknown, began at 10:22 a.m. when Oliver and his partner approached a vehicle in the parking lot with a man and a woman inside. Jones said it still is not clear what led Oliver, a 12-year veteran of the problem-oriented policing team, to approach the vehicle.

But he said the man inside fired a rifle at Oliver at close range, striking him in the forehead before Oliver could return fire. The deputy’s partner was able to return fire, but it was unclear whether he struck the assailant, who fled and attempted to carjack another vehicle down the street in the 700 block of Howe Avenue.

The driver of that vehicle apparently refused to surrender the keys and was shot in the head. The victim, whose condition was not known Friday afternoon, fell backward into their car and the assailants fled.

A short distance away, the pair carjacked a white convertible Ford Mustang, then abandoned it several blocks away in a residential neighborhood.

There, they confronted a gardener and demanded his pickup truck. After helping the man to unhitch his landscaping trailer from the red Ford truck, the couple took off, leaving the bloodied Mustang on the street.

From there, the pair apparently fled up Fair Oaks Boulevard to Carmichael, where a Sacramento County parks ranger spotted them changing clothes and reported the sighting to authorities. A massive police response shut down access to the area near Fair Oaks and Van Alstine and forced 19 San Juan Unified Schools, as well as Jesuit High School, to lock down for a time.

But those precautions were canceled after it became clear that the pickup had fled the area and headed up Interstate 80 to Auburn.

Placer County sheriff’s deputies responding to sightings of the pickup approached the vehicle and were wounded by gunfire from it. Both were taken to Sutter Rosevillle Medical Center; the sheriff’s department confirmed about 4:20 p.m. that one of the deputies had died but the other would survive.

At some point after that, the female who accompanied the gunman was apprehended, and authorities believe the suspect fled into an residential area near Placer High School, forcing that school and others to lock down their campuses.

The law enforcement presence on the winding roads near the home on Belmont Drive where the suspect allegedly hid was profound. CHP officers carrying automatic rifles stood roadside. A SWAT team staged on Gum Street and at Pacific Street, and armed Roseville police checked the car trunks of passing motorists before allowing them to drive through.

Authorities evacuated Placer High School after 3 p.m., with the first group of students slowly making their way onto school buses as Placer County sheriff's deputies carrying automatic rifles stood guard.

Schools throughout the region have been in and out of lockdown throughout the day as the shootings unfolded and left one Sacramento sheriff’s deputy, one civilian and two Placer County sheriff’s deputies shot.

Officials confirmed that the same man is suspected in all the shootings. The mayhem began with the shooting of Oliver at about 10:22 a.m., and was followed by the shooting of two Placer County sheriff’s deputies about an hour later in Auburn.

The reports came as law enforcement agencies from throughout the region raced to different shooting scenes in search of the guman, who was believed to be armed with a rifle and a pistol.

At about 1:30 p.m., authorities were searching near the Gold Country Fairgrounds for the suspect, as well as on Belmont Drive near Placer High School.

Hazel Haase, who lives on Belmont Drive, said heavily-armed officers came into her yard a little after 1 p.m. She said the officers had their guns drawn and appeared to be searching the nearby canyon that leads down to the north fork of the American River.

“It looks like a TV show around here,” Haase said in a telephone interview as a helicopter could be heard in the background.

Steven Morris witnessed the initial minutes of confusion following the shooting in Auburn. He was at a city park not far from the fairground when authorities ordered a lockdown of the area.

Morris said he saw dozens of officers with assault rifles, guns drawn, standing on the beds of pickup trucks circling downtown Auburn.

“I've only seen that in Mexico,” he said. “No one knew what was going on.”

Bowman said the vehicle originally used by the suspect in the Sacramento deputy’s shooting has been recovered and authorities are seeking information on his identity and background.

One witness at the Motel 6 in Sacramento, site of the first shooting, said she heard multiple shots fired and later saw the deputy sprawled on the parking lot not moving.

The witness, Tomorrow Jones, said she spent the night at the motel to celebrate her anniversary and that her family and baby were still in the second-floor room.

“If you snuck outside you could see him lying there,” she said. “I heard the shots, like nine of them. It was terrible.”

She added that responding emergency crews performed chest compressions on the fallen officer before he was placed on a gurney and taken to the hospital.

Sheriff Jones called Oliver an “outstanding officer,” part of a tight-knit group of POP officers who try to improve citizens’ quality of life by taking a proactive approach to problems.

Oliver spent 12 years in the unit, and three years in the jail before that.

Former Sheriff John McGinness said Oliver was a “passionate, good soul” who loved being a deputy.

Jones noted that Oliver’s death comes almost eight years to the day after Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell was killed in an unsolved claying.

“We live as a family; today we grieve as a family,” Jone said.

“Tomorrow, we start healing as family.”

Update: Suspect arrested in death of 2 NorCal deputies

Sacramento Deputy Danny Oliver killed in Sacramento shooting

    UPDATED
    6:05 PM

Placer County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Deana Erwin said Marcelo Marquez, 34, was arrested just before 4 p.m. after an hours-long manhunt that spanned two counties.

Marquez is suspected in four shootings that took place Friday, including the deadly shootings of Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver and a Placer County sheriff's deputy.

Erwin confirmed that one of her department's deputies was killed Friday after he was shot with an AR-15-style rifle.
A second Placer County sheriff's deputy was shot in the arm and is expected to survive.

"(We are) just really mad. This guy was on a one-man crime spree, and he has no idea the damage he did. It's gonna take a long time for us to not be mad," Erwin told reporters.

The situation began at 10:30 a.m. when Oliver and his partner went to check on a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a Motel 6 on Arden Way.

Someone in the vehicle opened fire and Oliver was hit in the forehead. He later died from his wounds, Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones said during a news conference.

Photos: Hours-long search for gunman ends in Auburn

Oliver is the first Sacramento County sheriff's deputy to die in the line of duty since Nov. 12, 2008.

"To the men and women of the Sheriff's Department: We live as a family, today we will grieve as a family and tomorrow we will start healing as a family. I pray for each and every one of you that you will find the courage that I know you have," Jones said.

Deputies said Marquez and a woman in her 20s were involved in multiple carjackings in Sacramento County after the shooting on Arden Way.

During an attempted carjacking on Howe Avenue, a driver was shot five times after he refused to give his keys to the suspect.

Family members identified the driver as Anthony Holmes and he is in critical condition at UC Davis Medical Center.
Marquez and the woman were able to carjack a Mustang vehicle at Spanos Court before ditching the car and carjacking a red 2002 Ford F-150 truck at Coronado and Castec drives, authorities said.

The Ford F-150 truck was spotted by the two Placer County deputies a couple of hours later in south Auburn.
An exchange of gunfire took place and both deputies were hit, sheriff's officials said.

The woman was taken into custody not far from the scene. Her name has not been released.

Marquez was able to get away and a search continued in the south Auburn area until he was apprehended at the home on Belmont Drive.

During the search, all Auburn schools were placed on lockdown.

Placer High School and Skyridge Elementary School students were evacuated. Placer High School's homecoming football game against Bear River that was scheduled for 7:30 has been postponed until Saturday.

Marquez was identified by law enforcement officers as the suspect in the shooting of Oliver after he left his ID on the dashboard of one of the vehicles.

After he was apprehended, Marquez was taken to a hospital in Auburn after he was shot in the hand.
He will then be transported to the Placer County Jail.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is asking witnesses to call 916-874-9022 if they have any information about the Arden Way shooting.
