    Fugitive sweep nets 200

Child rapists, robbers and an ex-NFL player were among nearly 200 people arrested this week during a fugitive sweep in Bexar and surrounding counties, officials with the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force announced Friday.

“Operation Heatwave” — a sweep involving 16 agencies and 90 officers — targeted mainly convicted felons with pending warrants, but it also ensnared Sam Hurd, who's facing a drug-trafficking trial in Dallas.

Hurd, a standout at Brackenridge High School here, played for the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears.

U.S. Marshal Robert Almonte explained that Hurd was not a target of the fugitive roundup. But officials said agents with Homeland Security Investigations and the task force arrested him Thursday after being informed he was wanted on a warrant for allegedly violating bond conditions by testing positive for marijuana.

“We put this operation together to go after the worst of the worst,” Almonte said, noting most of the 200 warrants were cleared with arrests.

He said the targets were wanted for a variety of offenses, including sexual assault of a child, aggravated robbery and gun crimes.
    Drugs also were seized.

Two pistols and an assault rifle were seized during the operation, said Bart Mora, resident agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in San Antonio.

Mauricio Fernandez, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in San Antonio, said agents also found an indoor marijuana operation with 100 plants growing during the sweep.

“As long as you have fugitives out on the streets, many, many of them still are going to be involved in committing crimes, so by taking some of them off the streets we have prevented crime,” Almonte said.

Officials also announced during the news conference up to a $5,000 reward for 330-pound Eddie Garza Jr., 40, a purported member of the Texas Mexican Mafia who's one of Texas' 10 most wanted fugitives. He's wanted on a parole violation, and people are asked to call 800-252-TIPS.
