Brewer appeals Bolton decision on SB 1070

PHOENIX (AP) — The judge considering challenges to Arizona's immigration enforcement law is scheduled to hear arguments Friday over the Arizona Legislature's request to join the governor in helping to defend the law.
Lawyers for the Legislature say lawmakers should be able to defend the law against a challenge by the U.S. Justice Department and cited a new state law that lets legislative leaders participate in efforts to defend the law.
The Justice Department says the Legislature would prolong the case and that state lawyers are adequately representing Arizona's interests.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton had put key parts of the immigration law on hold.
Gov. Jan Brewer is appealing that decision.

PHOENIX - State Senator Russell Pearce is scheduled to give oral arguments in a federal hearing Friday that will determine whether he can intervene in a federal lawsuit over SB 1070.
The bill, authored by Pearce, required law enforcement officers to verify the immigration status of people they stop, require illegal immigrants to carry registration papers at all times and made it illegal for immigrants to apply for accept jobs in Arizona, among other measures.
The legislation garnered national attention, drawing the attention of the Obama Administration which called the measure "unconstitutional."
On July 28, 2010, the day before SB 1070 was to take effect, Judge Susan Bolton, ruling on a lawsuit filed against the State of Arizona by the federal government, issued a preliminary injunction blocking those key provisions of the bill.
Friday, Sen. Pearce will argue his case that he should be allowed to intervene in the matter.
The hearing is scheduled to begin in the Sandra Day O'Connor Federal Courthouse in downtown Phoenix at 10am.
