4 times deported, Mexican gets 6 years after meth discovery

    January 8, 2015

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a Mexican man deported four times from the United States has been sentenced to six years in prison after he was arrested in a southern Oregon traffic stop and officers found 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine.

The U.S. attorney's office says the State Police stopped the vehicle last January on Interstate 5 in Douglas County, and a passenger fled.

Police brought him down with a tackle. They later identified him as 44-year-old Julio Gonzalez-Zamudio.

Prosecutors said he has a record of drug offenses and burglaries, had once served more than five years, and was most recently deported in 2011.

They said the sentence Judge Owen Panner imposed Monday covers his illegal re-entry and his violation of release-from-custody terms in 2011.

Too bad we don't have an agreement with Mexico that would require the illegal criminal to serve his full prison term in Mexico. Seems we could actually profit from such an agreement because I'm sure it cost a heck of a lot more to house a prisoner here than it does in Mexico. With such an agreement we could build a prison in Mexico and send all convicted illegals there to serve their sentence as handed down by an American judge. These folks would serve their time according to Mexico's standards. Just think, this plan would provide jobs to Mexican citizens and end up actually costing us less in the long term. There are a lot of details that would need worked out, but I think such a plan would work to our and Mexico's advantage.
