They chanted at full volume, “¡Si se puede!, ¡Si se puede!� (Yes, we can!; Yes we can!�), holding signs that read, “Minutemen: Human Rights Violators�; “We want recognition as workers: we are not terrorists�; “We demand the right to get work permits� and “Stop Deportations.�

"Yes we can" -- that's because the government allows it. Aliens, legal or illegal, have no "rights" in any country. Aliens from Mexico have the same rights in the United States that American aliens do in Mexico under the "law of nations" -- nothing more and that "right" does not include making demands of the government

“We Come from the Same Land�

To Severo Fuentes, originally from a community in the northern zone of the state of Guerrero, counting a day of his business’ financial losses doesn’t matter. He closed the curtains and told his employees, “To the march!�

There were others like him. Although they are businessmen, they dared to lose a day’s income, inventing excuses for not going to the factory. “Like, I’ll be going to Cook County Hospital, because they’re going to do an analysis,� said one worker whose name is withheld for obvious reasons.

There were also some who apparently had no reason for being there, in the sun and enduring the crush and trampling of feet. “We are legal residents. My children were born here and we have no problems with Immigration,� said Eliseo Morales, who took part in the march along with all his family, his wife, siblings, children and their godparents.

“But that won’t keep us from supporting our fellow countrymen. We are brothers by origin. We come from the same land and share the problems of our race, and so here we are,� he affirmed.

There were thousands of Mexicans, Salvadorans, Hondurans, Peruvians. They were also from Ecuador, Uruguay and Costa Rica. The flags of all the nationalities gave a festive air to the gathering. They were the complement to the hundreds of pieces of cardboard carried as battle standards.

Like silent voices leaving a permanent memory, each of them bore the demand “We want recognition as workers; we are not terrorists;� “We demand the right to get work permits;� “Minutemen, Human Rights Violators;� “Stop Deportations.�

As counterpoint to these printed shouts, the real voices spoke in phrases of incredulity. Words of surprise became the most recurring expression. Nobody could believe what they were witnessing. “Look at all the goddam people! How are we going to find space?�

In the moments prior to the demonstration, nobody envisioned what would follow. The human wave still could not be fully estimated. Nobody could even imagine that a little over fifty thousand fellow countrymen would come. Hundreds of popsicle vendors were making a holiday of the occasion. There was also crackling; “but we’re also selling corn on the cob and fruit, Boss.�

“Water, no, because it’s a screw. They told us that they were going to be giving it away. Toward the front there are cars and trucks giving away bottles,� confessed Simón Lagunas of Angangueo, Michoacán.

“Yes we can; yes we can,� at full volume. The war cries of the march caught the attention of American workers who watched from windows and openings of buildings facing the passage of the contingent.

“But, what is it that we can?â€? asked a smiling Maritza GarcÃÂ*a, who wore her origins on her sleeve. “I am from Magdalena Mixuca in Mexico City… and I don’t know what it is that we can, if my husband doesn’t…â€? whereupon she was cut off by dozens of guffaws from listeners.

The march surged onward. At the intersection of Ashland and 35th Street, the Chicago Police closed the way to the bridge. “For the safety of the demonstrators,� informed the officer in command.

The column was channeled to the right. There the human wave milled around. The narrow passage hindered the progress of the thousands of marchers, but nothing was stopping them.

From within the throng came friendly greetings to the agents of order. A reporter shouted out, “Quiet! Remember, this is a peaceful march. Calm down!�

She was answered with whistles, hoots and Bronx cheers.

“It’s like being in a stadium here. It doesn’t occur to anybody to support the referee,� explained Juan González with the unassailable logic of a soccer-addicted people.

“Well, Boss, doesn’t it occur to anybody that they should at least allow us the pleasure of cussing at those cops? Most likely, George Bush won’t pay us any attention, but that’s what I’m going to do, if just for the pleasure… or maybe not, Boss?�

Now to the White House

Over fifty thousand people on the street is enough reason for the federal government to look with respect upon the organizational capability of the Latin population of Illinois.

“And why not?� assures Abel Vences, one of the group of radio announcers who called a mass march through the streets of Chicago. “It’s only logical that the next step should be a bigger march, but this time in front of the White House in Washington, DC.�

Such a proposal follows the first evaluations focused on the political and social impact brought about by the mass demonstration enacted on the streets in the South Side of Chicago, and which brought out the city’s Hispanic aldermen and lawmakers, as was the case with Congressman Luis Gutiérrez.

Interviewed by telephone during a break in the broadcast of the program “El Pistolero y MemÃÂ*nâ€? (“The Gunman and MemÃÂ*nâ€?) in which he participates with Rafael Pulido “the Gunmanâ€? who had been the principal instigator and promoter of the march, Vences acknowledged that the level of citizen participation surpassed the organizers’ own expectations.

He felt that even though they couldn’t make an in-depth evaluation of the effects resulting from the march, among other reasons because after the demonstration came the long break of the Independence Day holiday, the first comments indicated a positive outcome per the measures of the objectives achieved by this movement.

“Indeed,� Vences affirmed, “we got many calls from Latin representatives, Mexican and Hispanic political organizations located in Illinois, California and Texas, among other states, to capitalize on the emotions brought out in these times in the thousands of people who marched through this city.�

He said that already there are proposals to sit down to discuss a project to allow calling an even bigger march, but this time in the country’s capital itself. “After this, nothing else is needed to increase the capability and operational organization of the people involved in issuing the call.�

In his turn, Vicar Marco Cárdenas, a member of the organizing committee and whose parish turned out enthusiastically for the event, related that the immediate outcome of the march has produced an increase in activists that now promote the message of unity and awareness among Latins to legally stand up against the abuses of power by officials and organizations recognized as being anti-immigrant.

During the interview, the cleric said that the Hispanic population has never had such a set of circumstances like now to allow demonstrating openly against outrages committed against minority groups.

From his point of view, this set of circumstances is just what brought thousands of people to respond to the call to join with one common voice to complain and protest to the federal government about the indifference and insensitivity with which hundreds of thousands of residents who lack working papers are treated in this country.

Indeed, Cárdenas was one of the main speakers in the demonstration’s closing events. There the priest, already identified as one of the principal leaders in the opposition against abuses to immigrants, said that the success achieved by the march, with the participation by thousands of citizens, should be just the beginning of other similar movements to raise the awareness of George W. Bush’s administration.

Once away from the euphoria that had overcome him at the time, but with the memory of the march still fresh, Cárdenas affirmed that this is his personal view.

Nevertheless, he pointedly observed that over fifty thousand people did march through the streets of Chicago, on a weekday and in suffocating heat, providing a real and significant chance for the voices of hundreds of thousands of immigrants to be heard by the federal government.

In his turn, Congressman Luis Gutiérrez acknowledged that the magnitude to which the demonstration grew was unexpected.

However, he observed that regardless of the medium used for calling the demonstration that resulted in such a gathering of people, what is certain is that the Bush administration must take into account and view with respect the power of the organizational capacity of the Hispanic society settled in this country.

Doubtlessly, the Congressman of Puerto Rican background pointed out, the federal government is obliged to stop delaying the issue of immigration reform.

He pointed out that one of the priorities is to bring this issue to the table right away, and if anybody has any doubts about taking this route, turning the head a little bit toward what happened in Chicago last Friday should be enough to get back on track. ©La Raza

It all rides on the CAFTA vote in the House of Representatives which will tell us whether or not that body is with US.

If they are, then they have the power to Impeach the President and send a request for Removal from Office to the US Senate.

We already know the position of the US Senate who will not remove this President from Office because it supports his Agenda.

Then you try and file suits of Treason to void the Pact with Canada and Mexico on the basis that the President did not have legal authority to execute and did so as an act of Treason. It will go all the way to the US Supreme Court. I believe irrespective of the next two Judges, they already have the 5 votes needed to claim the President acted within his powers given to him by the US Congress; will reverse the lower courts; exonerate the Government; and validate the Pact. Once that Pact is affirmed, then CAFTA will be achieved by Pact, then FTAA will be achieved by Pact because of the contiguous perimeters...Mexico, then Central America, then South America all in the name of Security and Prosperity.

the Senate OF the United States is "unconstitutional" and has no authority from ANY state to enter agreements binding on the States because the
Senate was elected by "the people" and not "appointed by the State" as guaranteed in Article I of the Constitution. The Senate is not vested with the States "power of attorney"

Look at Arizona -- the state legislature passes bills against illegal aliens and the Governor vetoes them and Senator McCain sponsors bills in Congress to grant amnesty --- is Senator John McCain voting on behalf of the Arizona State Legislature and the people of Arizona? I think not
