532 National Guard troops now at Arizona-Mexico border

PHOENIX - The National Guard says 532 troops are now stationed at the Arizona-Mexico border under President Barack Obama's plan to boost security along the border.

The first of the troops began being deployed on Aug. 30.

The National Guard said Friday that all 532 troops allocated to Arizona under Obama's plan are now stationed at the border.

The troops do not have the power to detain illegal immigrants or anyone else under the deployment but are carrying guns for self-defense. They are acting as extra eyes and ears for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Obama ordered 1,200 National Guard troops along the entire U.S.-Mexico border in May.

Even so, the amount of troops pales in comparison to the number of illegal crossers. It's like a small Bandaid to cover a huge gaping wound.

They already added National Guard Troops in New Mexico. CA. and TX. too.
