Minister: Illegal Immigrants Take Construction Jobs From Blacks

CHICAGO (WBBM) - While immigration advocates are calling on federal officials to ease up on their efforts to hunt down illegal immigrants, an African-American minister insists illegal immigrants are making it harder from blacks to find construction jobs.

WBBM Political editor Craig Dellimore reports from City Hall.

Rev. Gregory Daniels of United Voters for Truth and Change led a small group to Mayor Daley’s office to complain that African-American tradesmen and sub-contractors have been shut out of South Loop construction projects. One reason—he suggests—could be illegal workers being paid substandard wages.

Rev. Daniels says there may be a problem with illegal immigrants working on many constructions sites. He says there are many Mexicans working, and he believes, because they don’t speak English, they may be here illegally.

Rev. Daniels is quick to say he’s not anti-Hispanic and has Latino family members, even as he highlights this contentious issue. He says all people have to stand up for themselves, and he is standing up for African-Americans.

If people are in this country illegally, Daniels says, companies should be fined and immigration officials should step up their efforts.

It disgusts me that these illegals are taking jobs from Americans. Once again, pay below market wages and then refuse to hire anyone but illegals. This is wrong and must stop. Deport them all, pay a fair wage, you will have people knocking down doors to work construction jobs.
