Nearly 60,000 known or suspected illegal immigrants are being held in federal prisons, according to a report obtained by Fox News Tuesday from the Department of Justice.

G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, joined ‘The Ingraham Angle’ to discuss the DOJ’s findings.

Quoting the report, he said “criminal aliens” make up 21 percent of those in the Federal Bureau of Prisons custody and 38 percent of those in Marshals custody.

Terwilliger lamented that a “staggering” amount of resources are being diverted to fighting illegal immigration at the expense other problems like a rising opioid epidemic and rising crime rates in certain areas.

“We’re not talking about the non-violent simple possession (drug charges), these are actually drug traffickers and a lot of times these are individuals who are apprehended with massive loads who are walking across the border,” he said.

If we were deporting them like we should, there would probably be a lot less. I'm sure a lot of them have been in prison since the Bush and Obama administration. However, that doesn't excuse Trump because he isn't exactly setting the world on fire with deportation. Right now it seems more are coming in than are going out.

The segment, and the comments by Terwilliger, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Ingraham further expose the Left's persistent lie that illegals in the U.S. commit additional crimes at a lower rate than U.S.-born citizens.

Adding context to this latest news is the fact that tens of thousands of illegals who have managed to make it across the border are being released into the country every month, and "hundreds of thousands" of illegal aliens who committed additional crimes remain free in the U.S.
Hopefully, the new DOJ report on the massive number of illegal criminals in federal custody will be given the wide attention that it deserves. The report, it should be noted, does not include illegals who are in jails and prisons at the state and local levels — a number that is "significantly greater," according to Ingraham, than the number of criminal illegal aliens in federal custody.
Terwilliger said the next report from the DOJ on the problem should address the financial cost to the federal government of dealing with illegal alien criminals. He estimated, however, that the cost of the U.S. Marshals Service having to deal with illegals (who are in custody awaiting trial, for example) is $500 million a year, which does not include the costs due to illegal aliens incurred by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
The fact that we have this kind of data at all is due to the actions of President Donald Trump. As the Center for Immigration Studies reported in an article on June 12, 2018:

Five days after his inauguration, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 13768 entitled "Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States." In this order, he required the government to release certain documents detailing the effects of illegal immigration. Subsequently, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice began releasing the quarterly Alien Incarceration Report.

About one in four federal inmates are either an illegal alien, legal immigrant, or suspected foreign-born criminal, a new federal report concludes.

In total, there were nearly 240,000 inmates in the federal prison system as of 2018, a Department of Justice (DOJ) report finds. Of that total, nearly 60,000 of those prisoners were illegal aliens and legal immigrants who have been ordered to be deported, were in proceedings to be deported, or were currently under investigation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to confirm their foreign-born status.
This dictates that about one in four — or about 25 percent — federal inmates are born outside the U.S. and came to the country either illegally or legally.


In Bureau of Prisons (BOP) custody, alone, foreign-born prisoners account for more than 20 percent of the total federal prison population. This confirms that about one in five federal inmates in BOP custody are foreign-born. There were nearly 40,000 foreign-born inmates in BOP custody as of 2018.


Similarly, about 38 percent of inmates in U.S. Marshals Serice (USMS) custody are foreign-born, including more than 21,000 either illegal aliens or legal immigrants out of the more than 56,000 inmates in custody as of 2018. The data concludes that more than three in eight inmates in USMS custody are foreign-born, and 70 percent have already been ordered to be deported.


Most recent cost estimates find that the foreign-born federal prison population costs American taxpayers about $1.42 billion every year, according to a 2018 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).


The DOJ data does not factor in the number of foreign-born inmates, illegal aliens, or legal immigrants who are currently in state and local custody. The vast majority, about 90 percent, of the country’s criminal population are held in state and local jails.
