Sixty-four Taiwanese nationals were deported on Tuesday after being arrested on suspicion of fraud in a joint operation involving the Immigration Office, the Indonesian police and the Taiwan police.

They were arrested in different parts of the capital for their alleged involvement in online fraud.

“The 64 Taiwanese nationals have been deported.

The Taiwan police are waiting for them,” said city police detective corps chief Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti as quoted by kompas.com, adding that the Taiwan police have also arrested seven Taiwanese people, who were the main suspects in the case.

“We want to know if [the seven suspects] have links with the other suspects we have detained. This is a big case, involving people from Taiwan, China, Japan and Indonesia,” Krishna added.

Meanwhile, head of the investigation department at the Immigration Directorate General Bambang Catur said that his office still had in detention 26 Taiwanese nationals who had violated immigration laws. “We detained 26 people to await further processing, while those being deported today have been living here for one to two months. They used visas on arrival,” Bambang added. (bbn)
