Following Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement that the executive amnesty program DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – is being rescinded, left-wing protests quickly broke out in opposition to the action.

One such protest was organized by the pro-amnesty organization Movimiento Cosecha, which describes itself as “a new national movement fighting for permanent protection, dignity, and respect for all 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States through mass economic noncooperation.” Taking place right in front of Trump Tower on 5th Avenue, in New York City, the protesters blocked traffic in the street as they called for DACA recipients who had been recently jailed to be released. According to one of the protest’s organizers, Vera Parra, the protest called for the release of nine particular DACA recipients who had been arrested that morning, but instead resulted in 22 “allies” being arrested for blocking traffic. Parra called the protests acts of “civil disobedience,” and a response to “the threat of facing ICE retaliation.”
The email goes on to describe the organizers’ anger at the President’s decision to rescind the unconstitutional executive amnesty order, which was enacted by former President Obama. Another Cosecha spokeswoman, Thais Marques, said that they are “angry for all the young undocumented immigrants that haven’t turned 16 yet and are waiting to apply for DACA…for all the DACA parents that could lose the job that supported their family…for all the plans that DACA recipients had that now seem impossible.”

She claimed that “For the last 20 years, politicians in Washington DC have made promise after promise…for the last 20 years we have watched with baited breath as negotiations fail and bills die. For the last 20 years we have seen both Republicans and Democrats failing to make good on their promises to the immigrant community.”
President Trump’s decision to rescind DACA is a promise that he ran on in the 2016 election, and satisfies the Republican base, even with staunch Democratic opposition as well as criticism from some Republicans on Capitol Hill. It is one of the latest, and one of the biggest, moves by the President in the realm of immigration, which was arguably his main area of focus in the campaign.
