HIDALGO -Nine people died in gunbattles in Mexico. The thousands who cross to Mexico daily are advised to use caution.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel warning for Mexico in December. That warning replaced a previous one issued in October. Officials continue advising people to avoid crossing the border for non-essential travel.

Yesterday, the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros urged its employees to stay off the streets due to the "rolling gunbattles." The Matamoros mayor used social media to alert people in the city about the violence.

The shootout stretched from Reynosa to Matamoros on Highway 2. Tamaulipas state officials said federal police killed eight gunmen, and a criminal group killed an armed civilian.
