Authorities Searching for Man Who Escaped Federal Custody

    Reported by: Polo Sandoval
    Last Update: 1:33 pm

MCALLEN - Several law enforcement agencies are searching for a suspected human smuggler who escaped from federal custody. Officers were bringing the 20-year-old Mexican national to the federal courthouse when he somehow escaped.

Several agencies are looking for Victor Chavez, including Border Patrol agents and officers with the U.S. Marshal's Office. Chavez is described as 105 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

A Border Patrol spokesperson says Chavez was being taken to the federal courthouse for a hearing. Chavez is being held on human smuggling charges.

Authorities are concentrating their search to the area of 29th Street and Business 83 because we're told some residents in the area identified the individual. But no arrests have been made yet.

If you have information about Chavez's whereabouts, call the Border Patrol at 1-800-863-9382.

Authorities Still Looking for Suspected Human Smuggler

    Reported by: Polo Sandoval
    Last Update: 9:23 pm

MCALLEN - A suspected human smuggler is nowhere to be found. He managed to get away from the law an 11th time.

Victor Alfredo Arriaga is only 20, just over 100 pounds and running. Agents are hot on his trail. Arriaga was supposed to be in court Monday. He was supposed to be inside the secured walls of the McAllen federal building. He has admitted to being a hired guide for groups of illegals.

"Prosecution was being sought on him for illegal entry and alien smuggling. The subject was somehow able to escape," says Border Patrol supervisory agent Rosie Huey.

Arriaga slipped out of the hands of Border Patrol agents and into the cover of a nearby neighborhood. A supervisory Border Patrol agent confirms their smuggler was not in leg or hand restraints.

"We know that he wasn't restrained, but it's all still under investigation. We're still out there out there looking for him, and that's what we're focused on right now is just trying to find the subject,â€
