Several major cities have voted to boycott Arizona to protest the state’s controversial new immigration law, which is scheduled to go into effect at the end of the month.
On Wednesday, however, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and eight other state AG’s filed a friend-of-the-court legal brief to support the statute and endorse Arizona’s right to secure its borders.
Attorneys general from Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia all agreed to sign the brief, which was filed in the same U.S. District Court that will rule on the Obama administration’s federal lawsuit, USA Today reports.
"Arizona, Michigan and every other state have the authority to enforce immigration laws, and it is appalling to see President Obama use taxpayer dollars to stop a state’s efforts to protect its own borders," said Cox, a Republican who is currently running for governor in Michigan.
Earlier in the year, Cox and several other attorneys general came together to challenge the healthcare reform bill authored by President Obama and other prominent Democrats, according to the Associated Press.
Cox, whose parents immigrated from Europe, said that carrying identification is "part of daily modern life," noting that his mother kept her green card on her at all times.
