WESLACO -New numbers were released to show how many people skipped out on immigration court appearances from July 2014 to May 2015.

The processes from illegal crossing to court appearances take time. A person is usually picked up by Border Patrol. ICE will decide to detain the person at a facility or not then they will go to be scheduled to appear in court.

Federal immigration hearings run through the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR). They are categorized by children who cross alone, family units and everyone else that doesn’t fit the other two categories.

The courts received more than 77,000 new cases from July 2014 to May 2015.
Half of these cases stemmed from family units who crossed illegally.
Court dates were set for 60,000 of those cases.

EOIR tracked cases pending and cases closed. They uncovered how many illegal crossers broke the rules.

Immigration judges issued deportation orders for 16,136 people. The orders were issued specifically because each person failed to appear.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned 908 people self-deported during this time.

367 people were granted relief, and more than 4,000 cases were thrown out or terminated by the government.
