Newt Gingrich: Migrant caravan on the march -- What we must do if (or when) the caravan arrives at our border

The caravan of an estimated 7,000 Central American invaders trekking through Mexico toward the United States is roughly 1,000 miles from the nearest point of entry. A second group of roughly 1,000 is also seeking to join them.

They may still be weeks away from our border, but this leaves little time for President Trump, Congress and all Americans who care about our national sovereignty and the rule of law to solve three incredibly pressing challenges. I discussed these on Monday on Facebook.

First, we must determine – and do – what we can right now to end this invasion before it reaches our doorstep.

Second, we must develop and execute a cohesive, efficient, effective plan for preventing these invaders from illegally crossing our border – and for swiftly deporting those who are successful.

Finally, we must fix the debilitatingly stupid amalgam of immigration laws, policies and court rulings that enable and encourage migrants to band together and stage these types of illegal invasions.

Should we fail to solve any of these problems, our already dysfunctional immigration system will be further crippled, our relationships with Mexico and our Central American neighbors could be severely damaged, our border will be overwhelmed by droves of new migrants, and America will become significantly less safe.

If we are serious about preventing this caravan invasion from being imitated, we must overwhelm the invaders, stop them in their tracks, and quickly return them to their home countries.

If this caravan is allowed to get through and enter the U.S., the next caravan will be even bigger – and the one following that will be enormous.

According to the Gallup World Poll, 29 percent of people who want to migrate from Latin America and the Caribbean want to make the United States their permanent homes. That is 37 million people who want to come here. We must demand and ensure that they do so legally.

The clearest answer to alleviating this issue – while the caravan is still in Mexico – is for Mexico to stop it. President Trump has already made clear that securing the border is more important than our recent trade agreement with our southern neighbor. Mexico should take him seriously.

Many of the members of this caravan forced their way through the Guatemala-Mexico border. They are already in violation of Mexican law. Mexican law enforcement should take action.

Furthermore, we should not underestimate the degree to which human traffickers and transnational criminal gangs, such as MS-13 and other cartels, are involved with this invasion force. Mexican authorities should also be seeking to weed these elements out of the caravan – and dealing with those who may have legitimate asylum claims through the Mexican system.

Our Mexican neighbors must understand that while they did not assertively deal with this problem at their southern border, they will own the problem if it gets to their northern border.

This relates to what we must do if or when the caravan is allowed to arrive at the U.S. border.

President Trump should instruct Attorney General Jeff Sessions to issue a clarification to define the qualifications for asylum. Asylum is meant to provide protection for people who are fleeing real persecution and human rights abuses, such as genocide. Simply being from a poor country that lacks opportunities does not qualify someone for asylum.

We already have approximately 750,000 backlogged asylum cases, and some of those cases date back to 2014. These invaders should be screened (preferably in Mexico) so they never enter the U.S. system.

The federal government should also immediately begin coordinating with local and state governments along the border to develop an organized, completely nonviolent system that can deter these migrants from crossing into the United States. And this new system should process and return those who do cross our border within a matter of days – not weeks, months or years.

I know Texas already works with federal officials to prepare for mass migration events. Other border states should follow suit (if they don’t already) and begin preparing now for this caravan’s potential arrival.

If we are serious about preventing this caravan invasion from being imitated, we must overwhelm the invaders, stop them in their tracks, and quickly return them to their home countries.

By my estimate, we should have four to five U.S. personnel for every member of the caravan. If we want to protect our country, our border, and our rule of law, we must mobilize so much force that we don’t have to use it.

The news media should be allowed to cover the preparation and the overwhelming response to the caravan, so the members of the caravan – and every potential caravanner across Central and South America – will see that their plan will not work.

These first two problems are urgent and difficult. The third problem is just as urgent – but it is an order of magnitude more challenging. That problem is figuring out how we must fix our failing immigration system so that this type of situation doesn’t arise again.

Our immigration system has been completely broken by Democrat-backed laws that make it easier for immigrants to flood our system and stay in our country while their cases take years to process.

The immigration system has been further hobbled by activist judicial rulings that have tied the hands of border enforcement officials and prevented them from keeping track of those who cross the border illegally.

Once we deal with the immediate problem of this invasion caravan, Republicans and the White House must work to fix our broken immigration system once and for all.

I agree Judy that we need to greatly increase the numbers of republicans in Congress to push forward against illegal immigration. We must hope however that the president acts immediately to use all powers available to stop the current caravan from gaining entry or making asylum claims. This should also cover the everyday invasion by smaller numbers of illegal aliens crossing to claim asylum.

Turn off the spigot. Clean up with MAGA deportations and full interior enforcement, including the end of benefits.

Build the wall. Get creative to secure funding.

Oh yes, I agree. But know this, that no matter what he does, there will be resistance through the courts and even within the agencies of DHS and DOJ, there will be calls for impeachment through the Congress, there will be protests and riots by the Left-Wing Mob on the streets, and there will be chaos and violence at the border.

To support our side of this border show-down, we need to elect every Republican on the ballot at all levels of government on November 6, 2018 to support our laws, to support the will of the people and to support and defend the actions of our President.

I found Newt's article well-intentioned but very wanting. He understands the numbers issue of how many troops it will take to stop this, but he doesn't understand that there will be violence. He also doesn't understand that the mission is to keep them out which means they never enter the US to begin with which means we have no responsibility for or authority to return them to their home countries. That will be either their own responsibility or Mexico's and their home countries' responsibility.

The other big issue is our military. Do they know how to do this? Do they know how to guard and defend a border? And do we want how they do that televised like Newt suggested? I would say no we do not. We need to shut down all cell phone towers in the area. We need to block all reporters and TV cameras. No journalists.

This is an invasion. That means it's war. That means the border is now a war zone and needs to be treated as such. I don't think any of our military has any experience in defending a US border, since no one alive today has ever done it. Do they train for it? I don't know. I would think so, but I don't know. Do they train for civilian storms, the Trojan Horse invasion? I don't know. I would think so, but I don't know.

What's coming down is a really, really big deal. I hope we're ready and do it right to achieve the mission which is keep them out and shut it down, not rescue, collect and process.

No asylum at Ports of Entry.

They need PRIOR approval IN their home country where they can be investigated, vetted and given thorough medical exams!

Here is where Dream Act Amnesty backing RINO Newt Gingrich is trying to couch his true intentions. We do not need to fix any laws. We need to fix the Executive Branch's wild and inaccurate interpretation and implementation of our laws.

Almost none of these illegals qualify for asylum under current US laws and under our current laws they should not be allowed to pull up on our border, apply in Mexico, and then be allowed to enter while awaiting judge rulings.

This ridiculous Presidential policy combined with the insane policy of catch and release is why this is happening.... not our laws.

President Trump stood up on live television and announced that he would be deploying active duty military to the southern border to stop the caravan from coming into the country. He promised he would deploy "as many troops as it takes."Over the last week, we have reported on how the GOP establishment and even members of the administration have been trying to stop this from happening. Deploying the military and shutting down the border is the one power that President Trump has to stop this invasion and he just had the rug pulled out from under him.

Shut it down! Tell Congress they MUST vote to close the border now before it's too late, or else they will be voted out of office!

The caravan has to be celebrating. President Trump threatened to use the US military to stop them, and the Pentagon just said 'no.' Their numbers have already grown to more than fourteen thousand people and the caravan is expected to grow to the tens of thousands by the time they reach the border. When they get there, they will go up against the regular border patrol agents and just 800 soldiers who are providing purely logistical support.In other words, nothing is going to change. If these invaders step even one toe onto US soil, these migrants must be given a court hearing. With an immigration court backlog already of over 73 thousands cases, it will take months, if not years, to process the whole caravan. In the meantime, they will all be released into the United States.

On Monday, the first caravan member passed away. Not from exhaustion, as the media would want you to believe. He died because he fell off a truck traveling on the highway. He was loaded onto the back of a truck and slipped off. The caravan isn't walking here anymore. Now, they're driving... President Trump has to be furious. George W Bush deployed more than six thousand troops to the border in 2006. Obama sent 1,200 from the National Guard in 2010. Facing down the largest caravan ever to march on the southern border, the Pentagon is giving Trump 800 troops and blocking the soldiers from actually keeping the migrants out.

The President is now turning to Congress, begging them call an emergency session and stop the caravan from getting into the country. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell had a simple response: "No."The GOP leadership struck a deal with Democrats not to force the immigration issue before the election. Instead, they will trade amnesty for partial border patrol funding after the midterms; after the caravan arrives.

The courts refuse to let President Trump arrest these migrants. His own administration is undermining him by limiting what soldiers are allowed to do at the border. Our Republicans in action.

Sign an EXECUTIVE ORDER and slam the border shut to all those who have NO papers or authorization to be in our country.

They will not be allowed entry and all those apprehended ANYWHERE in the United States will be deported on the spot, including their entire family.

NO asylum at Ports of Entry due to lack of facilities and MASSIVE backlog in our courts.

This is a major health risk to our citizens as many of them carry diseases!

I have been surprised by what appears to be lenient attitudes toward illegal immigration by both General Kelly and General Mattis. They seem to be more liberal in their approach on the protection of our borders and sovereignty versus border protection of other countries.

President Trump recently said that he thought General Mattis was more of a democrat. However, the president is in charge, so if he is strong on demanding security of our borders and immigration enforcement, everyone should follow orders or resign.

Facing this current invasion at the southern border, though it occurs daily, surrender should not be an option. To allow thousands of feet to step across our border without consequences is not acceptable and is a surrender to foreign invasion and to the liberal globalists agenda to transform the nation.

President Trump is commander in chief. He must be strong in his commands and lead though others are weak.
