PROVIDENCE — Civil libertarians yesterday warned the state judiciary that it would be condoning a crime if it encouraged the two companies which clean the state’s courthouses to screen current workers through the new federal E-Verify database.

The E-Verify system was established in May to allow companies to screen the validity of Social Security numbers of new employees only. The law specifically prohibits companies from using the system to check the immigration status of current workers.

Asked for reaction to the letter from the local affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, court spokesman Craig Berke said the courts had every expectation the companies would follow the law. “We’re obviously not going to skirt the law.â€

It's such a shame that the group professing to uphold American's civil rights would threaten even more court proceedings if actions are taken by employers to protect their own integrity. The ACLU has just given the employers an "out" -- all they have to do is say "well, all my NEW hires are legal, but the ACLU wouldn't let me run my old employees through the system, so I didn't know."

Can someone please warn the ACLU that we're on to them and we're not afraid of them anymore?
The flag flies at half-mast out of grief for the death of my beautiful, formerly-free America. May God have mercy on your souls.

Is this a threat by the ACLU? It's time for that organization to be dissolved once and for all.

    Who thought this stupidity up?...
already employed workers cannot be checked for legal work status by using E-verify, only new hires can. As Homer Simpson would say...DOH!!!

They better hope all of these employees are legitimate and not a threat to the courts or the Judges..It only takes ONE to plant something verrrry dangerous while cleaning and no one else around...

ACLU never ceases to amaze me what extent they will go to, to protect illegal aliens
